  • Biomass is considered to be a major potential fuel and renewable resource for the future. In fact, there is high potential to produce the large amount of energy from biomass around the world. In this study, to obtain basic data for practical application of wood pellet and wood pellet boiler system as heating system in agriculture, agricultural biomass resources were surveyed, pellet was made of agricultural by-product such as stem of rape, oat and rice, ricehusk and sawdust and wood pellet boiler system with capacity of 116 kW was manufactured and installed in greenhouse of $38.5m{\times}32m$. High heating value, bulk density and ash content of pellet made of agricultural by-product and efficiency and heating performance of this system was estimated. Rice straw was the largest agricultural biomass in 2005 and the total amount of rice straw converted into energy of $131.71{\times}10^{11}$ kJ. And in 2005, total amount of forest' by-product converted into energy of $29,277.05{\times}10^{11}$ kJ. High heating values of pellets made of agricultural by-products of stem and seed of rape, stem of oat, rice straw and rice husk were 16,034, 16,026, 16,089, 15,650, 15,044 kJ/kg respectively. High heating values of pellets made of agricultural by-products were 83.6% compared to that of wood pellet. Average bulk density of pellets made of agricultural by-products of stem and seed of rape, stem of oat, rice straw and rice husk was 1,400 $kg/m^3$. Ash contents of the pellets were 6.6, 7.0, 6.2, 5.5, 33% respectively. Ash content of rice husk pellet was the largest compared to other kind of pellets. To increase efficiency of agricultural pellet boiler, the boiler adopted secondary heat exchanger. The agricultural pellet boiler designed and manufactured in this study had high efficiency of 84.2% compared to the conventional agricultural pellet boiler, when water flow rate, exhaust gas temperature and average combustion furnace temperature were 39L/min, $180^{\circ}C$, $680^{\circ}C$ respectively. And pellet supplying and pausing time were 13, 43 seconds respectively. In March of 2010, prices of wood pellet, agricultural tax free diesel, diesel, kerosene were 350 won/kg, 811 won/L, 1,422 won/L, 976 Won/L respectively. Also in terms of energy, prices per same heating value were 77.8, 90.1, 158, 108.4 Won/Mcal. • In Jeju, underground air is used for heating greenhouse and fertilizing natural $CO_2$ gas by suppling directly into greenhouse. But greenhouse heating method by direct supply of underground air has several problems as like low temperature below $20^{\circ}C$ or high relative humidity over 90%. The underground air is inadequate in heating of crops such as mangos, oranges with the growing temperature over $20^{\circ}C$. Also if the relative humidity of greenhouse is kept with over 90%, diseases can strike almost of the crops. And also the ventilation loss becomes larger because the air pressure of inside greenhouse by direct supply of underground air is higher. In this study the heat pump system using underground air as heat source was developed and heating performance of the system was analyzed. Heating COP of the system was 2.5~5.0 and rejecting heat into greenhouse and extracting heat from underground air in this heat pump system were 46.5~31.4 kW, 34.9~20.9 kW respectively.

  • For the liquid rocket propulsion system using liquid oxygen as oxidizer, helium for pressurizing LOX is usually stored in the LOX tank with cryogenic temperature. For that kind of pressurizing system, cryogenic helium is discharged from the immerged pressurant cylinder and passes through the heat exchanger downstream of gas generator. During the process, helium pressurant is heated from cryogenic temperature to high one and supplied to the ullage of propellant tank. To develop the pressurizing system, a cryogenic heating apparatus is needed to simulate the heat exchanger. In this paper, the cryogenic heating apparatus for development of the pressurization system is presented along with its heating test results with cryogenic helium.

  • The applicability of UPT (Ultrasound Pulse Thermography) for real-time defect detection of the ceramic heating plate is described. The ceramic heating plate with superior insulation and high radiation is used to control the water temperature in underwater environment. The underwater temperature control system can be damaged owing to the short circuit, which resulted from the defect of the ceramic heating plate. A high power ultrasonic energy with pulse duration of 280 ms was injected into the ceramic heating plate in the vertical direction. The ultrasound excited vibration energy sent into the component propagate inside the sample until they were converted to the heat in the vicinity of the defect. Therefore, an injection of the ultrasound pulse wave which results in heat generation, turns the defect into a local thermal wave transmitter. Its local emission is monitored and recorded via the thermal infrared camera at the surface which is processed by image recording system. Measurements were Performed on 4 kinds of samples, composed of 3 intact plates and the defect plate. The observed thermal image revealed two area of crack in the defective ceramic heating plate.

  • To replace waste oil with the lowest grade which has high viscosity into heating fuel, light oil and buncker C oil in waste oil was used and the fuel characteristic was analyzed by its concentration after mixing oil. The mixture conditions were controlled by the reaction time (30 s~30 min) and kept by the reaction temperature ($75{\pm}5^{\circ}C$) when mixing speed was stirred at 3400~3600 rpm. We used the buncker C oil and light oil to decrease viscosity of waste oil and the dynamic viscosity was decreased by 81~96%. Optimum mixing ratio (waste oil : buncker C oil : light oil) as heating fuel was 1 : 1 : 1. Flash point, dynamic viscosity and heating value of this case were identified $78^{\circ}C$, $20.02mm^{2}/s$, 9158 kcal/L respectively.

  • In order to improve fatigue life of transmission gear carburizing is normally used. Carburizing is a very good process to achieve low cost and high performance. The machined gears are heated up to carburizing temperature and then cooled rapidly in an oil bath to produce high surface hardness. The gears may undergo excessive thermal distortion during heating and rapid cooling. In order to predict the distortion during heating and rapid cooling, a coupled thermo-mechanical simulation is needed. In the current research, the simulation of heating and cooling was performed. The results show that the thermal distortion and the residual stresses are well predicted by the coupled simulation. In addition, induction heating and rapid cooling simulation is carried out to predict the thermal distortion. The amount of distortion is compared. It is shown that induction heating is very effective to reduce thermal distortion.

  • $Nd_{12.5}Fe_{80.6}B_{6.4}Ga_{0.3}Nb_{0.2}$ HDDR-treated powder was compacted by hot-pressing using different configurations of dies and heating rates. The die configurations were especially different in terms of the evacuation system that was used in heating for hot-pressing. The coercivity in the compacts was influenced by the evacuation system of the die and heating rate. In spite of the identical hot-pressing temperature and heating rate, coercivity was radically reduced above $600^{\circ}C$ in the compacts prepared in the closed-type die compared to that in the compacts prepared in the open-type die. The coercivity in the compacts prepared in the closed-type die decreased with increasing heating rate and the value further increased when extreme high heating rate was employed. $Nd_{12.5}Fe_{80.6}B_{6.4}Ga_{0.3}Nb_{0.2}$ HDDR-treated powder contained a significant amount of residual hydrogen (approx. 1500 ppm) in the form of $Nd_2Fe_{14}BH_x$ hydride. The dramatic coercivity decrease in the compact prepared in the closed die is attributed to the disproportionation of $Nd_2Fe_{14}BH_x$ hydride. High coercivity is mainly due to the effective desorption of hydrogen or the suppression of hydrogen-related disproportionation upon hot-pressing.
