This paper describes a CMOS time to digital converter (TDC) that measures the interval between two signals and converts to a digital signal. There are various methods to measure the time interval. But several architectures have a limitation in resolution and in conversion time. Moreover, they have complex algorithms. But the proposed TDC circuit has achieved a high resolution (25ps) by using a high-speed digital sampler and simple algorithm. The sampler detects when input signals comes into the TDC and output is coded. The proposed multiphase clock generator was also implemented to achieve 25p resolution.

Borehole radar is a radar used for underground resources and geological exploration purposes. It needs a high-speed sampler to transmit electromagnetic waves with a pulse width of several ns and to receive reflected waves of several tens to several hundreds of MHz reflected from the object to be surveyed. ETS (Equivalent-Time Sampling), which can achieve sampling performance of several GHz with a sampling frequency of several tens of MHz, is suitable for use as a sampler of a borehole radar receiver. In this paper, we propose a method to control the sampling clock delay, which is the most important factor in ETS sampler design, using four clocks with phase difference of $90^{\circ}$ for one clock source. The proposed method can reduce the time required to acquire the data within the set interval by 1/25 than the conventional method using the delay generator. When the implemented sampler is applied to the receiver of existing borehole radar, it is possible to accumulate 58 additional times due to the shortened sampling time. In addition, by using one delay control logic compared with the conventional method using several sampling clock delay control logic in order to satisfy the target sampling range, it is possible to omit the correction process which was necessary in the past. As a result, the structure of the system can be simplified and a uniform sampler can be realized.
Objectives This study was conducted to determine the depositional characteristics of several tree barks, including Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba), Pine (Pinus densiflora), Platanus (Platanus), and Metasequoia (Metasequoia glyptostroboides). These were used as passive air sampler (PAS) of atmospheric polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Methods Tree barks were sampled from the same site. PBDEs were analyzed by high-resolution gas chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometer, and the lipid content was measured using the gravimetric method by n-hexane extraction. Results Gingko contained the highest lipid content (7.82 mg/g dry), whereas pine (4.85 mg/g dry), Platanus (3.61 mg/g dry), and Metasequoia (0.97 mg/g dry) had relatively lower content. The highest total PBDEs concentration was observed in Metasequoia (83,159.0 pg/g dry), followed by Ginkgo (53,538.4 pg/g dry), Pine (20,266.4 pg/g dry), and Platanus (12,572.0 pg/g dry). There were poor correlations between lipid content and total PBDE concentrations in tree barks ($R^2$=0.1011, p =0.682). Among the PBDE congeners, BDE 206, 207 and 209 were highly brominated PBDEs that are sorbed to particulates in ambient air, which accounted for 90.5% (84.3-95.6%) of the concentration and were therefore identified as the main PBDE congener. The concentrations of particulate PBDEs deposited on tree barks were dependent on morphological characteristics such as surface area or roughness of barks. Conclusions Therefore, when using the tree barks as the PAS of the atmospheric PBDEs, samples belonging to same tree species should be collected to reduce errors and to obtain reliable data.

In this paper, we introduce the results of the testing and observation systems for performance wideband expansion in the Korean VLBI Network(KVN). The KVN performs VLBI observations to 1024 Mbps data rate, and 8192 Mbps observing for four simultaneous observation is now evaluating for normal operation. The VLBI stations in several world countries developed their own wideband observing systems to observe the celestial objects with high precision and high resolution or are working with several countries. The KVN is planning to introduce a high-speed sampler, OCTAD, for sampling directly up to 2048 MHz bandwidth for RF signal of K/Q/W/D band in the frequency band without conversion. Therefore, as a preliminary study for the performance scalability of the KVN then through the close cooperation with National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), the OCTAD high-speed sampler and OCTADISK2 high-speed recorder were installed in the KVN Yonsei station, and verify the performance through a wideband.
Isotopic compositions of precipitation have been used to understand moisture transport in the atmosphere and interactions between precipitation and groundwater. Isotopic compositions of speleothems and ice cores, so called, ''paleoarchives'', can be utilized to interpret climate of the past and global circulation models (GCMs). The GCMs are able to explain the paleoarchives, can be validated by the precipitation isotopes. The developments of stable isotope analyzers make high-resolution isotopic studies feasible. Therefore, a high-resolution study of precipitation isotopes is needed. For this study, precipitation samples were collected for every 5 to 15 minutes, depending on precipitation rates, using an auto-sampler for precipitation isotopes near coastal area. The isotopic compositions of precipitation range from -5.7‰ (-40.1‰) to -10.8‰ (-74.3‰) for oxygen (hydrogen). The slope of ${\delta}^{18}O-{\delta}D$ diagram for the whole period is 6.8, but that of each storm is 5.1, 4.2, 7.9 and 7.7, respectively. It indicates that evaporation occurred during the first two storms, while the latter two storm did not experience any evaporation. The isotopic fractionations of precipitation has significant implications for the water cycle and high-resolution data of precipitation isotopes will be needed for the future studies.
Seawater sampling is the primary task for the study of the marine environmental parameters that require shipboard or laboratory experiments for their analyses, and is also required for the calibration of some instruments for in situ measurement. A new automatic bottle (AUTTLE) is developed for seawater sampling at any desired time and water depth by self-triggering. Both any type of single or assembled mooring for 15 days and manual actuation by using a remote messenger as existing instantaneous single point water samplers are possible. Its sampling capacity and the resolution of time setting are 2 liters and 1 second, respectively. The result of a field experiment with an optical backscattering sensor (OBS) and a total of 14 AUTTLES for the in situ calibration of the OBS shows that the AUTTLE must improve our understanding on the behavior of the sand/mud mixtures in the environments with high waves and strong tides. The AUTTLE will serve as a valuable instrument in the various fields of oceanography, especially where synchronized seawater sampling at several sites is required and/or the information in storm period is important.

A dual-channel glass coil sampling technique was used to measure hourly formaldehyde concentration in the ambient air. The dual-channel coil sampling assembly consists of three parts; an all-pyrex 28-turn coil made of 0.2-cm internal diameter glass tubing for gas-liquid contact and scrubbing of soluble gases, an inlet section upstream of the coil for introducing sample air and scrubbing solution, and a widened glass section downstream of the coil for gas-liquid separation. The scrubbing solution used was a dilute aqueous DNPH (dinitrophenylhydrazine) solution. Hourly concentration of formaldehyde was determined at a Gwangju semi-urban site during two intensive studies between September and October using the dual channel glass-coil/DNPH sampling technique and HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) analysis. The mean concentration was 1.7($0.4{\sim}4.7$) and 3.0($0.5{\sim}19.1$) ppbv for the September and October intensives, respectively, which are considerably low, compared to those measured in polluted urban areas around the world including several urban areas of Korea. The diurnal variation showed significant increase of formaldehyde in the daytime suggesting the dominance of formation of formaldehyde due to photochemical oxidation of methane and other hydrocarbons. An increase in the formaldehyde sometimes in the night might be due to an increase in primary source, i.e. traffic emissions. It was also found that rapid increase in formaldehyde levels from 3.0 to 19.1 ppbv in the afternoon on October 20 was due to plumes from burning of agricultural wastes such as rice straw and stubble. It is expected from the measurement data that the constructed dual-channel glass coil sampling system can be utilized for measuring atmospheric concentration of the formaldehyde with high time resolution.
This study was performed to describe analysis method of 209 PCB congeners in ambient air samples. The samples were collected by high volume air sampler in Chonju city. Extracted samples were cleaned by silicagel cleanup modified with sulfuric acid and activated carbon cleanup processing. The cleaned samples were analyzed by high resolution gas chromatography and high resolution mass spectrometry (HRGC/HRMS) with DB-5 column (60 m, 0.25 mm i.d., 0.25 m film thickness) to analyze the 209 kinds of PCB congeners. PCBs levels of air samples were detected to the range between 0.003 and $0.163pg-TEQ/m^3$. The PCBs congener of 162 kinds were detected in samples analysed using DB-5 column and 37 kinds peaks were overlapped with congeners more than one. It is difficult to isolate PCB 118/106 and PCB 105/127 in coplanar PCB, so it is likely to overestimate the concentration.. The distribution of coplanar-PCB congeners in origin source samples (Kanechlor and exhaust gas from incinerator) was compared with that in air samples, and PCB 81, PCB 77, PCB 126, and PCB 169 were higher in incinerator samples.
The intensive dust observation experiment has been performed at Korea Global Atmosphere Watch Center (KGAW) in Anmyeon, Korea during each spring season from 2007 to 2009. Downward and upward hyper-spectral spectrums over the dust condition were measured to understand the hyper-spectral properties of Asian dust using both ground-based Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and space-borne AIRS/Aqua. To understand the impact of the Asian dust, a Line-by-Line radiative transfer model runs to calculate the high resolution infrared spectrum over the wave number range of $500-500cm^{-1}$. Furthermore, the radiosonde, a $PM_{10}$ Sampler, a Micro Pulse Lidar (MPL), and an Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS) are used to understand the vertical profile of temperature and humidity and the properties of Asian dust like concentration, altitude of dust layer, and size distribution. In this study, we found the Asian dust distributed from surface up to 3-4 km and volume concentration is increased at the size range between 2 and $8{\mu}m$ The observed dust spectrums are larger than the calculated clear sky spectrums by 15~60K for downward and lower by around 2~6K for upward in the wave number range of $800-1200cm^{-1}$. For the characteristics of the spectrum during the Asian dust, the downward spectrum is revealed a positive slope for $800-1000cm^{-1}$ region and negative slope over $1100-1200cm^{-1}$ region. In the upward spectrum, slopes are opposed to the downward one. It is inferred that the difference between measured and calculated spectrum is mostly due to the contribution of emission and/or absorption of the dust particles by the aerosol amount, size distribution, altitude, and composition.
