LED TV 백라이트 소비전력 저감을 위한 스마트 디밍 알고리즘 개발 (Smart Dimming Control Algorithm for Reducing Power Consumption of LED TV Backlight)

  • In this paper, the new smart dimming algorithm which is mixed with PWM and PAM control method is proposed for reducing the power consumption of LED TV Backlight. The proposed technique is using the curve characteristics of LED forward voltage and current which is proportionally changing LED forward voltage as changing LED forward current. Therefore, each PWM and PAM control method has different LED forward voltage and current in the same brightness condition. The PWM control method adjusts the brightness of LED TV Backlight by only varying the duty ratio of PWM and constantly sustaining the amplitude of LED forward current and voltage. So, the level of LED forward current and voltage in the PWM control method is relatively high and constant regardless of duty ratio of PWM. On the other hand, the PAM control method adjusts the brightness of LED TV Backlight by directly varying the level of LED forward current. So, the level of LED forward current and voltage in the PAM control method is lowered according to the brightness level. For the above-mentioned reason, the PAM control method has the advantage of reducing the total power consumption of LED TV Backlight at the brightness condition of below 100%, compared with PWM control method. By implementing this characteristic to LED driver circuit with control algorithm in MCU, the power consumption of LED TV Backlight can expect to be reduced. The effectiveness of the proposed method, new smart dimming algorithm, CPWAM(=Conditional Pulse Width Amplitude Modulation), has been verified by experimental results.

  • Commercialization of surface lighting using Light Emitting Diodes (LED) has embraced the advance to Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) technology. This is necessary to achieve light-efficiency-improvement and longer component life. The range of application of LED lighting for both interior and outdoor lights has been gradually expanding. Automobiles and home appliances are now included. In the case of LED surface lighting in a domestic refrigerator, achieving high efficiency requires optimization of the number of LEDs in a pack. Optimization is also required in the design stage of development with regard to the conversion of the light source type from point light sources to the surface light type. This paper addresses these design problems. It presents a study of brightness variations for design solutions that differ from the existing technology in both the number of LED packages and use of Light Gathering Power (LGP) information. The intention is to facilitate production of high brightness LED surface lighting for domestic refrigerators.

  • 본 논문에서는 밝기제어장치 및 색상제어장치 그리고 기존의 제어장치와의 호환성을 갖는 통합 인터페이스 제어장치 설계하고 제작하여 구현하였다. 구현 방법으로는 데이터 전송방식은 DVI/HDMI 전송방식의 규격을 적용하였으며 적용한 IC는 Sil1169 IC를 사용하였다. 밝기제어는 AT89C2051을 사용하여 8단계의 밝기조절 기능을 갖도록 프로그래밍하였다. 또한 영상 및 디밍 데이터 처리를 위하여 EPM240T100C5 IC를 사용하여 제작하였다. 그 결과로 기존에 제작하여 사용되어지고 있는 DVI/HDMI 전송방식을 적용한 제어장치와 호환이 가능하고, 주변 밝기에 따라 선명하고 고품질의 Full HD급 영상을 LED 디스플레이 장치에 통하여 재생할 수 있는 결과를 얻었다.

조명용 백색 LED광원의 등기구 형태에 따른 광도 및 기구효율 분석 (The Luminous Intensity and Luminaire Efficiency Analysis of White LED as Luminaire types for General Lighting)

  • 본 논문에서는 조명용 고휘도(HB, high brightness) 백색 LED(light emitting diode)램프의 배열 및 여러 가지 등기구 글로브(globe)의 형태에 따른 광도(luminous intensity)값과 기구효율(luminaire efficiency)을 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션으로 수행하여 비교분석 하였다. 즉, LED의 배열은 가로${\times}$세로(7개${\times}$7개)가 정사각형 형태로 49개를 배열하고, LED 간격은 LED의 발광면 중심부로부터 8.2[mm], 10.0[mm], 15.0[mm]로 각각 3가지로 하였으며, 등기구의 글로브는 LED발광면 중심부에서 30[mm], 50[mm] 떨어진 거리로 구분하였다. 또한 등기구 글로브가 없을 때와 있을때로 구분하여 있을 때에는 글로브 형태를 볼록 원형과 엠보(embossing)형태로 구분하고 엠보는 8.2[mm], 5.0[mm]의 크기에 따른 선택으로 시뮬레이션 27가지로 수행하여 등기구의 글로브 형태에 따른 광도 및 기구효율을 고찰해 봄으로써 앞으로 21세기 디지털조명이라고 일컫는 LED를 사용한 LED 광원(light source) 및 등기구 개발에 많은 도움이 되고자 하였다.

헤드업 디스플레이 휘도 증가를 위한 LED 합성비율과 영상잡음에 대한 연구 (A Synthesis Ratio of Light Emitting Diodes and Quantization Noise for Increasing Brightness of Head-up Displays)

  • 본 논문은 디스플레이 휘도를 증가시키기 위하여 적색, 녹색, 청색 고휘도 Light Emitting Diode(LED)를 광원으로 사용하고, Digital Micro Device(DMD) 패널을 적용한 헤드업 디스플레이에서 세 개의 LED 광원 합성 비율과 합성에 따른 양자화 노이즈를 최소화시키는 LED 합성 비율을 연구하였고, 밝기에 영향을 미치는 녹색 LED 구동 비율과 접합 온도에 대하여 분석하였다. 이를 통하여 39%의 LED 중첩 방법을 통하여 황색과 청록색의 2차원 색을 합성하여 33.3%의 휘도 증대 효과를 얻을 수 있었다. 또한 양자화노이즈를 억제하고 영상 화질 측면에서 우수한 색정밀도를 얻을 수 있었다.

Top-GaP 상부에 나노 크기의 Roughness 처리에 의한 AlGaInP 고휘도 LED의 휘도 향상 (Improvement of Brightness for AlGaInP High-brightness LEDs with Nano-scale Roughness on Top-GaP Surface)

  • AlGaInP high-brightness LEDs(HB-LEDs) have gained importance a variety of application operating in the red, orange, yellow and yellow-green wavelength. The light generated from inside LED chips should be emitted to the air through the surfaces of the chips. However, because of the differences between the semiconductor and air or epoxy's refractive index, some of the light was blocked so that caused lowering external quantum efficiency. In this study, nano-scale roughness on the top-GaP layer of AlGaInP epitaxial wafer was fabricated to improve' the brightness of AlGaInP LEDs. Nano-scale roughness was made by ICP dry etcher. Our AlGaInP LEDs with nano-scale roughness has higher brightness (about 28.5 %) than standard AlGaInP LEDs.

  • This paper Presents to choose number of RGB LED through optical special quality analysis of RGB LED samples and to produce ratio of RGB LED for a stable color variation and white light. Also, it is to design of a simple switching circuit using some resistances and switching transistors that is able to operate each 16 RGB LED stably, and switching control circuit base on a microcontroller that would be suitable for colors variation patterns control more than about 64 patterns and colors variation more than about 100,000 colors using ON/OFF and Duty control.

  • In this paper, High Brightness LED driver IC using new current sensing circuit is proposed. This LED driver IC can provide a constant current with high current precision over a wide input voltage range. The proposed current-sensing circuit is composed of a cascode current sensor and a current comparator with only one reference voltage. This IC minimizes the voltage stress of the MOSFET from the maximum input voltage and has low power consumption and chip area by using simple-structured comparator and minimum bias current. The LED current ripple of the designed IC is in ${\pm}5%$ and a tolerance of the average LED current is lower than 2.43%. This shows much improved feature than the previous method. Also, protections for input voltage and operating temperature are designed to improve the reliability of the designed IC. Designed LED driver IC uses $1{\mu}m$ X-Fab. BiCMOS process parameters and electrical characteristics and functioning are verified by spectre(Cadence) simulation.

  • We developed the 4channel Light Medical Therapy Apparatus for External Injury Cure using a high brightness LED. This equipment was fabricated using a micro-controller and a high brightness LED, and designed to enable us to control light irradiation time, intensity, frequency and so on, Especially, to control the light irradiation frequency, FPGA was used, and to control the change of output value, TLC5941 was used. Control stage is divided into 4 levels by program. Consequently, the current value could be controlled by the change of level in Continue Wave(CW) and the output of a high brightness LED could be controlled stage by stage. Compared with one LED irradiation, several LEDs irradiation could increase optical power.

  • The brightness of LED changes according to the current flowing through LEDs. The current mirror was used to drive LEDs effectively. The reference current of the current mirror was usually controlled by the resistor but the size of this resistor is very large and this resistor consumes too much power for high power LED backlight driving. The reference current of the current mirror LED driver was controlled by using flyback converter at small size with low power consumption in this paper. The concept of active current source was presented.
