The estimation of variance components or variance ratios in linear model is an important issue in plant or animal breeding fields, and various estimation methods have been devised to estimate variance components or variance ratios. However, many traits of economic importance in those fields are observed as dichotomous or polychotomous outcomes. The usual estimation methods might not be appropriate for these cases. Recently threshold linear model is considered as an important tool to analyze discrete traits specially in animal breeding field. In this note, we consider a hierarchical Bayesian method for the threshold animal model. Gibbs sampler for making full Bayesian inferences about random effects as well as fixed effects is described to analyze jointly discrete traits and continuous traits. Numerical example of the model with two discrete ordered categorical traits, calving ease of calves from born by heifer and calving ease of calf from born by cow, and one normally distributed trait, birth weight, is provided.

This article presents Bayesian approach to regression splines with knots on a grid of equally spaced sample quantiles of the independent variables under functional measurement error model. We consider small area model by using penalized splines of non-linear pattern. Specifically, in a basis functions of the regression spline, we use radial basis functions. To fit the model and estimate parameters we suggest a hierarchical Bayesian framework using Markov Chain Monte Carlo methodology. Furthermore, we illustrate the method in an application data. We check the convergence by a potential scale reduction factor and we use the posterior predictive p-value and the mean logarithmic conditional predictive ordinate to compar models.
In this paper, we consider Bayesian approaches to zero inflated Poisson model, one of the popular models to analyze zero inflated count data. To generate posterior samples, we deal with a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method using a Gibbs sampler and an exact sampling method using an Inverse Bayes Formula(IBF). Posterior sampling algorithms using two methods are compared, and a convergence checking for a Gibbs sampler is discussed, in particular using posterior samples from IBF sampling. Based on these sampling methods, a real data analysis is performed for Trajan data (Marin et al., 1993) and our results are compared with existing Trajan data analysis. We also discuss model selection issues for Trajan data between the Poisson model and zero inflated Poisson model using various criteria. In addition, we complement the previous work by Rodrigues (2003) via further data analysis using a hierarchical Bayesian model.
For the purpose of disease mapping, we consider the four small area estimation techniques to estimate the mortality rate of small areas; direct, Empirical estimation with total moment estimator and local moment estimator, Estimation based on hierarchial generalized linear model. The estimators are compared by empirical study based on lung cancer mortality data from 2000 Annual Reports on the Cause of Death Statistics in Gyeongsang-Do and Jeonla-Do published by Korean National Statistical Office. Also he stability and efficiency of these estimators are investigated in terms of mean square deviation as well as variation of estimates.

We consider a model estimation and model selection methods for the multi-way contingency table data with non-response or missing values. We also consider hierarchical Bayesian model in order to handle a boundary solution problem that can happen in the maximum likelihood estimation under non-ignorable non-response model and we deal with a model selection method to find the best model for the data. We utilized Bayes factors to handle model selection problem under Bayesian approach. We applied proposed method to the pre-election survey for the 2004 Korean National Assembly race. As a result, we got the non-ignorable non-response model was favored and the variable of voting intention was most suitable.

Extreme rainfall causes heavy losses in human life and properties. Hence many works have been done to predict extreme rainfall by using extreme value distributions. In this study, we use a generalized extreme value distribution to derive the posterior predictive density with hierarchical Bayesian approach based on the data of Seoul area from 1973 to 2010. It becomes clear that the probability of the extreme rainfall is increasing for last 20 years in Seoul area and the model proposed works relatively well for both point prediction and predictive interval approach.
The power production using renewable energy is more important because of a limited amount of fossil fuel and the problem of global warming. A concentrative photovoltaic system comes into the spotlight with high energy production, since the rate of power production using solar energy is proliferated. These systems, however, need to sophisticated tracking methods to give the high power production. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical tracking system using modular Bayesian networks and a naive Bayes classifier. The Bayesian networks can respond flexibly in uncertain situations and can be designed by domain knowledge even when the data are not enough. Bayesian network modules infer the weather states which are classified into nine classes. Then, naive Bayes classifier selects the most effective method considering inferred weather states and the system makes a decision using the rules. We collected real weather data for the experiments and the average accuracy of the proposed method is 93.9%. In addition, comparing the photovoltaic efficiency with the pinhole camera system results in improved performance of about 16.58%.

Objective: The objective of this study was to characterize the number of loci affecting growth traits and the distribution of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) effects on growth traits, and to understand the genetic architecture for growth traits in Hanwoo (Korean cattle) using genome-wide association study (GWAS), genomic partitioning, and hierarchical Bayesian mixture models. Methods: GWAS: A single-marker regression-based mixed model was used to test the association between SNPs and causal variants. A genotype relationship matrix was fitted as a random effect in this linear mixed model to correct the genetic structure of a sire family. Genomic restricted maximum likelihood and BayesR: A priori information included setting the fixed additive genetic variance to a pre-specified value; the first mixture component was set to zero, the second to 0.0001×σ2g, the third 0.001×σ2g, and the fourth to 0.01×σ2g. BayesR fixed a priori information was not more than 1% of the genetic variance for each of the SNPs affecting the mixed distribution. Results: The GWAS revealed common genomic regions of 2 Mb on bovine chromosome 14 (BTA14) and 3 had a moderate effect that may contain causal variants for body weight at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months. This genomic region explained approximately 10% of the variance against total additive genetic variance and body weight heritability at 12, 18, and 24 months. BayesR identified the exact genomic region containing causal SNPs on BTA14, 3, and 22. However, the genetic variance explained by each chromosome or SNP was estimated to be very small compared to the total additive genetic variance. Causal SNPs for growth trait on BTA14 explained only 0.04% to 0.5% of the genetic variance Conclusion: Segregating mutations have a moderate effect on BTA14, 3, and 19; many other loci with small effects on growth traits at different ages were also identified.
The main objective of this study was to develop a new regional frequency analysis model based on hierarchical Bayesian model that allows us to better estimate and quantify model parameters as well as their associated uncertainties. A Monte-carlo experiment procedure has been set up to verify the proposed regional frequency analysis. It was found that the proposed hierarchical Bayesian model based regional frequency analysis outperformed the existing L-moment based regional frequency analysis in terms of reducing biases associated with the model parameters. Especially, the bias is remarkably decreased with increasing return period. The proposed model was applied to six weather stations in Jeollabuk-do, and compared with the existing L-moment approach. This study also provided shrinkage process of the model parameters that is a typical behavior in hierarchical Bayes models. The results of case study show that the proposed model has the potential to obtain reliable estimates of the parameters and quantitatively provide their uncertainties.
College tuition is a significant economic, social, and political issue in Korea. We conduct a Bayesian analysis of a hierarchical model to address the factors related to college tuition based on a survey data collected by Statistics Korea. A binary response variable is selected depending on if more than 70% of tuition costs are supported by parents, and a hierarchical Probit model is constructed with areas as groups. A set of explanatory variables is selected from a factor analysis of available variables in the survey. A Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm is used to estimate parameters. From the analysis results, income and stress are significantly related to college tuition support from parents. Parents with high income tend to support children's college tuition and students with parents' financial support tend to be mentally less stressed; subsequently, this shows that the economic status of parents significantly affects the mental health of college students. Gender, a healthy life style, and college satisfaction are not significant factors. Comparing areas in terms of the degrees of correlation between stress/income and tuition support from parents, students in Kangwon-do are the most mentally stressed when parents' support is limited; in addition, the positive correlation between parents support and income is stronger in big cities compared to provincial areas.
