  • A 9-years female Pointer with a 5 cm opened mammary mass in the 4th right mam-mary gland was referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Chungnam National University. Any abnormal sign was not found in physical examination. But there were leukocytosis, neutrophilia, and monocytosis. Values of RBC, hemoglobin, and hematocrit were low in hematologic examination. Several “cannon-ball” like nodules and pulmonary interstitial pattern were found in the thoracic radiogram. Histopathologically, proliferation of epithelial cells and myoepithelial cells and cartilage tissues were found in the mammary gland mass and infitration of spindle myoepithelial tumor cells was observed in pulmonary nodules. This dog was diagnosed as mammary mixed tumor with Pul- monary metastasis.

  • Angina bullosa hemorrhagica (ABH) is a rare oral mucosal disorder characterized by blood blisters which is not related to hematologic or immunopathologic abnormalities. ABH is most common in middle-aged and elderly people and associated with local trauma, diabetes and long-term use of inhaled steroids. Diagnosis is generally based on reviewing history and clinical presentation and it is important to distinguish it from other serious disorders. Usually, ABH is benign condition which requires no treatment. We present a case of 81-year-old female with ABH.

  • Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy, an emerging immunotherapy, has demonstrated promising clinical results in hematological malignancies including B-cell malignancies. However, accessibility to this transformative medicine is highly limited due to the complex process of manufacturing, limited options for target antigens, and insufficient anti-tumor responses against solid tumors. Advances in gene-editing technologies, such as the development of Zinc Finger Nucleases (ZFNs), Transcription Activator-Like Effector Nucleases (TALENs), and Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR/Cas9), have provided novel engineering strategies to address these limitations. Development of next-generation CAR-T cells using gene-editing technologies would enhance the therapeutic potential of CAR-T cell treatment for both hematologic and solid tumors. Here we summarize the unmet medical needs of current CAR-T cell therapies and gene-editing strategies to resolve these challenges as well as safety concerns of gene-edited CAR-T therapies.

  • Progressive pigmented purpuric dermatosis(Schamberg's disease, purpura simplex) is an uncommon eruption characterized by petechiae and patches of brownish pigmentation, particularly on the lower extremities. Lesions remain for months or years and present only a cosmetic problem. there is no hematologic disease, venous insufficiency, or associated internal disease. The most characteristic feature is orange brown, pinhead-sized "cayenne pepper" spots. It is hard to find similar disease in Oriental Medicine, however it could be though related with 瘀血. We observed and treated a 25 old female with progressive pigmented purpuric dermatosis on her lower extremities, without pain and itching sign. About 1 year after our treatment, herb-medication. acupuncture treatment, negative therapy and applied aroma oil in order to remove the 瘀血(a kind of congestion) & inner heat and promote the circulation of her blood, the area of pigmented purpuric dermatosis was decreased remarkably and the colour was lighter. She is been treated continuously now and satisfied with the efficacy of treatment.

  • In February 1991 I initiated a blood conservation program that included hemodilution, use of a cell conservation device to concentrate diluted blood from operative field and from mediastinal shed blood, acceptance of a minimal hematocrit level of 25% in stable patients, and strict avoidance of use of blood products without definitive indication. A retrospective study to evaluate the effects of blood conservation program was designed to compare the amount of homologous transfusion, hematologic data, and postoperative outcome in patients operated on before and after initiation of blood conservation program. Patient characteristics were not different between two groups, before[n = 18] and after[n = 42] initiation of the program. The significant decrease of homologous transfusion[5.2 vs 1.4 units] and the marked increase of nontransfused patients[none vs 57%] in experimental group were due to marked decrease in homologous transfusion during the operation[4.6 vs 0.7 unit]. I conclude that with strict intraoperative blood conservation program, cardiac patients can be operated on with minimal homologous transfusion.

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are widely used for treatment of animals. Their use is limited by frequent side effects commonly involving the gastrointestinal tract, most important of which is development of ulcerating lesions principally In the stomach. Unfortunately, presence of such lesions is often unsuspected because clinical signs may be overlooked until a complication develops. A 5-year-old, female mongrel dog was referred to Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Chungbuk National University. She was showed vomiting, anorexia and lethargy after administration of ibuprofen (400 mg/body, qid, oral) for 5 days. General examination and plain radiography were performed in the patient. Physical examination, hematologic values, chemical profiles, urinalysis and radiographs were normal. Therefore, endoscopic examination was performed in this patient and confirmed to show the gastric ulcer in pyloric region of the stomach. Drug therapy was performed successfully in this case. This article reports the development of a gastric ulcer associated with orthopedic disease treated by ibuprofen.

  • Strongyloides stercoralis (SS) is an intestinal nematode that is mainly endemic in tropical and subtropical regions and sporadic in temperate zones. SS infection frequently occurs in people who have hematologic malignancies, HIV infection and in individuals undergoing immunosuppressive therapy. In this study, we report a 12year-old immunocompetent boy who was admitted to our hospital with acute abdomen. Laboratory evaluation showed strongyloidiasis, amebiasis and giardiasis. Clinical and laboratory findings immediately improved with albendazole therapy. Therefore, when diarrhea with signs of acute abdomen is observed, stool examinations should be done for enteroparasitosis. This approach will prevent misdiagnosis as acute abdomen. Complete clinical improvement is possible by medical therapy without surgical intervention.

  • Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is an uncommon hematologic disease characterized by an abnormal sensitivity of blood cells to the lytic action of serum complement. We experienced one case of PNH in Yeungnam University Hospital from May 1983 to May 1989. The patients was followed up without severe complications for 4 years since diagnosis with the only consevating treatments such as washed blood transfusion, adrenal corticosteroids, androgens, folate and iron preparation, intermittently.

  • Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have become the main drugs for programmed cell death receptor-1 or ligand-1 expressing non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) combined with conventional chemotherapy. ICIs are generally more tolerable than cytotoxic chemotherapies in terms of toxicity, and ICI-related adverse events are mild and manageable. However, these drugs may lead to unexpected severe adverse events such as immune-related hematologic toxicities, which could be life-threatening. Here, a rare case of a pembrolizumab-related adverse event in a patient with NSCLC who showed early-onset hemolytic anemia and recovered by high-dose steroid and a series of plasma exchanges is reported.

  • As a potent antigen presenting cells and a powerful inducer of antigen specific immunity including cytotoxic T cell activity, dendritic cells(DCs) are being considered as a promising anti-tumor therapeutic module. Unlike solid tumors, leukemia is the hematologic malignancy involving immune effector cells. The expected usage of DCs in leukemia is the treatment of minimal residual disease(MRD) after the remission or stem cell transplantation. In this study, syngeneic leukemia cells were inoculated intra-venously into the mouse (WEHI-3 into the Balb/c), and the autologous tumor cell lysate pulsed DCs were injected as a therapeutic module twice in two weeks.
