This study aims to develop a system that maximizes the radiative heat transfer from the heliostat to the receiver by using the configuration factor and a solar tracking device. As the heat transfer from the heliostat to the receiver is delivered by solar radiation, the configuration factor commonly utilized for radiation is applied to control the heliostat. Tracking the sun and calculating its position are possible by using an illuminance sensor (CdS) and Simulink. By applying optimized algorithms programmed using Simulink that maximize the configuration factors among the heliostat, receiver, and sun in real time, the solar absorption efficiency of the receiver can be maximized. Simulations were performed on how to change the angle required to control the elevation and azimuthal angle of the heliostat during the daytime with respect to various distances.

Heliostat, as a concentrator reflecting the incident solar energy to the receiver located at the tower, is the most important system in the tower-type solar thermal power plant, since it determines the efficiency and performance of solar thermal plower plant. Thus, a good sun tracking ability as well as its good optical property are required. In this paper, we propose a method to compensate the heliostat sun tracking error. We first model the sun tracking error, which could be measured using BCS (Beam Characterization System), by multilayered neural network. Then the extended Kalman filter was employed to train the neural network. Finally the model is used to compensate the sun tracking errors. Simulated result shows that the method proposed in this paper improve the heliostat sun tracking performance dramatically. It also shows that the training of neural network by the extended Kalman filter provides faster convergence property, more accurate estimation and higher measurement noise rejection ability compared with the other training methods like gradient descent method.

This paper deals with the solar tracking performance using a small heliostat, the light reduction rate of the sun light, and the performance of uniform irradiation of LED light for a plant factory. A high precision encoder is attached to the heliostat to improve tracking accuracy. As a result, our heliostat-based solar tracking systems track efficiently the movement of the sun light in experimental tests. The reduction rate of the sun light in the plant factory is then measured by using an illumination sensor. The average reduction rate is 4.29%, which represents lower light reduction rates. In uniform irradiation tests of LED light, sixteen points are measured, and overall deviations of irradiation were within eight percents.
Solar thermal power generation allows additional benefits of cheap thermal storage and easy hybridization with other fossil fuel-driven power generation. KIER has been performing the project for solar thermal chemical reaction hybrid power generation. The project is to build and operate the first solar thermal chemical reaction hybrid power generation system in Korea. For concentrating solar thermal energy $m^2$ dish type concentrator was adapted and a heliostat is installed for reflecting horizontal insolation to the dish concentrator. At the moment building the dish concentrator including mirror and heliostat with sun tracking system was completed and it's performance are being closely evaluated. This paper will introduce some detailed designs and construction procedures which we have experienced so far.
A control system for solar thermal power plant is the control system to coordinate the whole system's operation, including management of distributed control systems, process control for optimal operation of total system, monitoring system operating conditions and doing administrative functions. This work, as a progress report, presents the results obtained so far in building a control system for the 1MW solar thermal power plant. To make the control system, we first defined the control system's hierarchy and classified the role of each layer. Then, as the first stage of making control system, we designed and developed the sun tracking control system for heliostat.

The paper deals with the development of the multi-layer plant production systems using a sunlight and LED. Nowadays most of plant production systems have been developed by plant factory using only LED. In case of plant factory using LED, however, the light quantity is not sufficient for various kinds of medicinal plants. In this paper, authors have tried to apply the both the luminous sources using a natural sunlight and an appropriate LED. During the daytime, a natural sunlight was applied using the Heliostat, while in the nighttime, LED was used. The proposed mixed plant production system was constructed under the various environmental conditions such as $CO_2$ distribution, temperature and humidity. Through the hybrid plant prodution systems, the growth of Ginseng plants were recorded and demonstrated by CCD camera and monitoring program.
Sunlighting offers the high quality of life and has potential to improve environment, economy and human comfort. Especially mirror sunlighting system has competitive power in price, saving energy and solving problems of sunshine lack. This study aims to analyze the adequate applications of mirror type sunlighting systems available in Korea to enhance the living environment. For the purpose, contemporary applications were analyzed by spatial characteristics, size and usage in Germany, Switzerland, Australia, Japan and Korea. As the results, they are being applied for the place with lack of sunshine in housings. For culture complex, they are usually applied for atrium. Nowadays, application of complex systems is increasing to solve sunshine lack and make uniform illuminance. Therefore both aesthetic and technical consideration is needed to apply the advanced mirror sunlighting systems in various spaces.

A small-scale solar concentrating system was developed and demonstrated for supplying process heat required in solar thermo chemical reaction. The concentration system consists of a heliostat equipped with a solar tracking device and a dish concentrator. From the initial thermal test of the concentrating system it was found that the system works very well with around 500-600 concentration ratio capable of supplying about 3kW therml energy to the reactor. Once the concentration system was turned on, the reactor temperature rapidly increased over $1,000^{\circ}C$ and could be maintained high enough for solar chemical reaction.

Throughout history, daylight has been a primary source of lighting in buildings, supplemented originally with burned fuels and more recently with electrical energy. Before daylight was supplemented or replaced with electric light in the late 19th-century, consideration of good daylight strategies was essential. As we entered the mid-20th-century, electric light supplanted daylight in buildings in many cases. Fortunately, during the last quarter of the 20th-century and early years of this century, architects and designers have recognized the importance and value of introducing natural light into buildings. There are many simple strategies that can enhance daylighting and reduce the need for electric lights. Good quality daylight is always welcome, but remember that the electric lights must be dimmed or shut off in order for daylighting to save energy. We designed and built mirror systems and vertical daylighting devices to improve daylight condition of office buildings in bad condition because urban density is getting higher. This case study aims to analysis the principles and characteristics of mirror systems and vertical daylighting devices and selected the method that can improve constructability. The results of this study are going to use the back data to set-up the design standards. Hereafter we're going to progress the performance test and product the design manual to improve applicability of daylighting systems at design phase.
DAHAN, the first 1 MWe Solar Power Tower system locates north to Beijing where nearby The Great Wall is now under construction with cooperation between China and Korea. Results in predicting the preliminary performance of this central receiver system are presented in this paper. Operating cycles under some typical weather condition days are simulated and commented. These results can be used to assess the impact of alternative plant designs or operating strategies on annual energy production, with the final objective being to optimize the design of central receiver power plants. Two subsystems are considered in the system simulation: the solar field and the power block. Mathematic models are used to represent physical phenomena and relationships so that the characteristics of physical processes involving these phenomena can be predicted. Decisions regarding the best position for locating heliostats relative to the receiver and how high to place the receiver above the field constitute a multifaceted problem. Four different kinds of field layout are designed and analyzed by the use of ray tracing and mathematical simulation techniques to determine the overall optical performance ${\eta}_{field}$ and the spillage ${\eta}_{spill}$.The power block including a Rankine cycle is analyzed by conventional energy balance methods.
