  • The purpose of this study is to contribute the development of an El Nino prediction model. The objectives of the study are to (1) extract sea surface height data from the TOPEI/Poseidon altimeter, and (2) compare the relations among the sea surface height, sea surface temperature and wind field. NOAA AVHRR Multi-channel data is used for sea surface temperature and wind data is derived from ERS 1, 2 AMI wind scatterometer. The results showed that sea surface height has increased significantly during the El Nino season. The sea surface height is positively related to sea surface temperature and negatively related to zonal wind.

  • Acoustic cavitation can induce various sonochemical effects including pyrolysis and radical reactions and sonophysical effects including microjets and shockwave. In environmental engineering field, ultrasound technology using sonochemical effects can be useful for the removal and mineralization of recalcitrant trace pollutants in aqueous phase as one of emerging advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). In this study, the effect of liquid height, the distance from the transducer to the water surface, on sonochemical oxidation reactions was investigated using KI dosimetry. As the liquid height/volume increased (40~400 mm), the cavitation yield steadily increased even though the power density drastically decreased. It was found that the enhancement at higher liquid height conditions was due to the formation of standing wave field, where cavitation events could stably occur and a large amount of oxidizing radicals such as OH radicals could be continuously provided.

  • Background and objective: The purpose of study is to analyze the three-dimensional (3D) structure by creating a 3D model for green spaces in a park using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images. Methods: After producing a digital surface model (DSM) and a digital terrain model (DTM) using UAV images taken in Mureung Park in Chuncheon-si, we generated a digital tree height model (DHM). In addition, we used the mean shift algorithm to test the classification accuracy, and obtain accurate tree height and volume measures through field survey. Results: Most of the tree species planted in Mureung Park were Pinus koraiensis, followed by Pinus densiflora, and Zelkova serrata, and most of the shrubs planted were Rhododendron yedoense, followed by Buxus microphylla, and Spiraea prunifolia. The average height of trees measured at the site was 7.8 m, and the average height estimated by the model was 7.5 m, showing a difference of about 0.3 m. As a result of the t-test, there was no significant difference between height values of the field survey data and the model. The estimated green coverage and volume of the study site using the UAV were 5,019 m2 and 14,897 m3, respectively, and the green coverage and volume measured through the field survey were 6,339 m2 and 17,167 m3. It was analyzed that the green coverage showed a difference of about 21% and the volume showed a difference of about 13%. Conclusion: The UAV equipped with RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) modules used in this study could collect information on tree height, green coverage, and volume with relatively high accuracy within a short period of time. This could serve as an alternative to overcome the limitations of time and cost in previous field surveys using remote sensing techniques.

  • This paper analyzes optimal stirrer parameter to improve field uniformity in a mode-stirred reverberation chamber. Stirrer parameter is varied about stirrer height and stirrer angle. Also we analyze quality factor, number of excited modes and stirrer efficiency that affect field uniformity. The results show good performance as higher as stirrer height. Isotropic field distribution is formed at $45^{\circ}$ stirrer angle. When stirrer angle varies, scattering characteristic of incident wave are changed. So electric field distribution in a mode-stirred reverberation chamber is also changed. Therefore, it affect field uniformity. The results expect to help that designs stirrer for get better field uniformity. Immunity test performed designed mode-stirred reverberation chamber for semiconductor that categorized by technology. Test result shows that good recurrence compared wave-guide immunity test.

  • The measurement of magnetic field is performed about DC and AC magnetic field in test track of depot. The test point is cap, on the converter/inverter box, on the traction motor, on the APSE and on the line filter, the height of measurement is bottom and 50 cm height. In case of AC magnetic field, the selected specific frequency is measured on the converter/inverter box. The AC magnetic field is checked and analysis through RS-232C and notebook PC. The DC magnetic field is measured by using the Hall Probe, test result is saved and analysis by PXI system. On the line filter, the maximum value is 1.4 mT in case of DC magnetic field and 0.044 mT in case of AC magnetic field at 50 Hz.

  • The present study aims to document the run-up height, losses of human lives and property damage due to the tsunami occurred on December 26, 2004 in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India. These Islands were severely devastated by the tsunami. Approximately 1,925 people were lost their lives and 5,555 people were reported missing. A field survey carried out at 26 locations indicates that the passenger jetty of Little Andaman area recorded the highest run-up height of 17.3m and the Chidiyatopu area had the greatest inundation of 500m from the coastline.

  • The theoretical current density equations for organic semiconductors was derived according to the internal carrier emission equation based on the diffusion model at the Schottky barrier contact and the mobility equation based on the field dependence model, the so-called "Poole-Frenkel mobility model." The electric field becomes constant because of the absence of a space charge effect in the case of a higher injection barrier height and a lower sample thickness, but there is distribution in the electric field because of the space charge effect in the case of a lower injection barrier height and a higher sample thickness. The transition between the injection- and bulk-limited currents was presented according to the Schottky barrier height and the sample thickness change.

  • The MHD virial theorem applied for observed photospheric field may be the one of way to estimate magnetic energy of generally invisible coronal magnetic structure. However, the photospheric field is not in a force-free state, so the application of virial theory needs some care. Here we use a series of MHD simulations of emerging field to investigate how we can apply the virial theorem to the emerging field. In early emerging phase, virial energy has a minus value although positive area at the photosphere is continuously generated toward a late emerging phase. We discuss why this tendency occurs. Then we derive the critical height where the actual emerging magnetic energy is almost comparable to the virial energy. If the difference between virial energy and magnetic energy becomes 10 percentage of the magnetic energy, we define this is the critical height, and assume the emerging field is close to force-free. We also discuss how the critical height changes with the initial twist of an emerging flux tube.

  • Engineering type tropical cyclone (TC) wind field models are used to estimate TC wind hazard. Some of the models are well-calibrated using observation data, while others are not extensively compared and verified. They are all proxies to the real TC wind fields. The computational effort for their use differs. In the present study, a comparison of the predicted wind fields is presented by considering three commonly used models: the gradient wind field model, slab-resolving model, and a linear height-resolving model. These models essentially predict the horizontal wind speed at a different height. The gradient wind field model and linear height-resolving model are simple to use while the nonlinear slab-resolving model is more compute-intensive. A set of factors is estimated and recommended such that the estimated TC wind hazard by using these models becomes more consistent. The use of the models, including the developed set of factors, for estimating TC wind hazard over-water and over-land is presented by considering the historical tracks for a few sites. It is shown that the annual maximum TC wind speed can be adequately modelled by the generalized extreme value distribution.

  • A field study was conducted to assess the preferred height and the range of discomfort recognition of school desks and chairs for students from elementary school to high school. For this study 43 male subjects and 44 female subjects in Taejon area were surveyed. The result shows that the preferred height of chairs is about 1.7cm higher than the popliteal sitting height, while the preferred height of desks shows no significant difference with the elbow sitting height which is known to be the ergonomically proper desk height. The threshold value between comfort and discomfort recognition of chair height is 1.88cm below the most prefeered height and 1.79cm about it. The threshold value between comfort and discomfort recognition of desk height is 1.76cm below the most prefeered height and 2.62cm about it.
