Geochemical transport and water-sediment partitioning of heavy metals in acid mine drainage, Kwangyang Au-Ag mine area, Korea

  • Total extraction of stream sediments in the Kwangyang mine area shows their significant pollution with most trace metals such as Cr, Co, Fe, Pb, Cu, Ni, Zn and Cd, due to sulfide oxidation in waste dumps. Calculations of enrichment factor shows that Chonam-ri creek sediments are more severely contaminated than Sagok-ri sediments. Using the weak acid (0.1N HCl) extraction and sequential extraction techniques, the transport and sediment-water partitioning of heavy metals in mine drainage were examined for contaminated sediments in the Chonam-ri and Sagok-ri creeks of the Kwangyang Au-Ag mine area. Calculated distribution coefficient (Kd) generally decreases in the order of Pb $\geq$Al > Cu > Mn > Zn > Co > Ni $\geq$ Cd. Sequential extraction of Chonam-ri creek sediments shows that among non-residual fractions the Fe-Mn oxide fraction is most abundant for most of the metals. This indicates that precipitation of Fe hydroxides plays an important role in regulating heavy metal concentrations in water, as shown by field observations.

  • Soils and dusts collected from Changhang smelter area were analyzed for Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cd in order to determine their dispersion pattern and mode of occurrences, and to investigate the pollution level of heavy metals such as Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cd by smelting activity. The soil pH of Changhang area is in the range of 3.7~8.8, and increased with increasing distance from the smelter site. The particles containing heavy metals are several tens of ${\mu}m$ in diameter, and have well crystal form. Samples collected near the smelter show similar particle properties in size, shape, and composition, which means that they could be originated from the same contamination source. Element couples of Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cd indicate high correlation with each other, which means that Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cd could be originated from the same point source of smelter. Heavy metal contents were decayed to background levels from 2.5 kilometer away from the smelter.

  • Disposal of municipal solid waste has become a major problem in many countries around the world. As landfill space for the disposal of ash from Municipal Solid Waste Incineration (MSWI) becomes scarce, numerous reports and researches address the various environmental issues about the municipal solid waste incineration waste management and other particulate matters with the range of 10 ~ 2.5. Although in many developing and industrialization countries landfill with the disposal of municipal solid waste, open incineration has become a common practice. Large municipal waste incinerators are major industrial facilities and have the potential to be significant sources of environmental pollution. Despite the significant volume reduction from incineration, waste recycling is important to ensuring the future welfare of mankind. The main goal of the present work is the physical and chemical characterization of the local incineration bottom ash towards its eventual re-utilization. In this paper, we reported the studies on physical and chemical characteristics of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash and bottom ash containing particulate matter whose particulate sizes are lower than $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$ and heavy metal were investigated.

  • The purpose of this study was to suggest the alternative measures to properly manage the water quality of Lake Euiam, Chuncheon. Current pollution level of Gongji stream (influent to Lake Euiam) and sources of contamination in Lake Euiam were investigated. Particle size, organic matter and nutrient contents, heavy metals were analyzed for sediment samples taken from lower region of Gongji stream. Average organic matter content of nine sediment samples was 5.7%, and for nitrogen and phosphorus it was 750 mg/kg and 977mg/kg, respectively. Heavy metals including aluminum, iron, manganese and zinc were measured, whereas Cd and As were not detected. Effluent from Chuncheon Wastewater Treatment Plant appeared to be one of the main cause of organic matter and nutrients level in Lake Euiam. Inhibition of primary production and consequent reduction of organic matter content within the Lake should be a key measure to protect the water quality of Lake Euiam. Preventive measures to reduce the level of nutrients in wastewater treatment effluent were found necessary.

폐광산 주변에 발생하는 잡초 식생의 특징 (Analysis of Weed Vegetation in Vicinity of Abandoned Mines)

  • 폐광산 주변의 토양 중금속 오염과 이 지역의 식생조사를 실시한 결과 As의 오염이 가장 심각하게 나타났다. 조사된 광산에서 모두 나타난 초종은 달맞이꽃, 닭의장풀, 며느리밑씻게, 개망초, 망초 등 5개 초종이며, 이들은 식생천이의 초기종으로, 중요치(important value)는 달맞이꽃이 가장 높았다. 달성광산은 종풍부도 및 종다양성이 가장 높았으며, 오염의 정도와는 별개로 작토층이 잘 발달한 것으로 밝혀졌다. 조사 지점 사이의 리차가 큼에도 불구하고 군집유사도는 비교적 높은 것으로 밝혀졌으며 이는 교란에 의한 천이 초기종들의 우점이 강하기 때문으로 생각된다.

  • 본 실험은 환경친화적인 중금속 정화방법의 하나인 식물복원법(phytoremediation)에 가장 적합하다고 생각되는 단풍잎돼지풀, 돼지풀, 소리쟁이를 선발하여, Cu, Cd농도에 따른 생육양상, 흡수범위 및 정화차이능을 구명하여 식물 복원법적용의 타당성을 제안하고자 실시한 결과는 다음과 같다. 중금속처리에 따른 공시초종의 생육반응은 상이하였으며, 특히 Cu, Cd처리에서 단풍잎돼지풀, 돼지풀이 생육이 좋았으며 소리쟁이는 Cd처리에서 생육이 불량하였다. 처리농도에 따라 지상부와 지하부발달은 Cu의 200ppm, Cd의 50ppm까지는 생육저해는 일어나지만 중금속의 흡수량은 공시초종 모두에서 양호하여 식물복원법(phytoremediation)의 가능성을 보여주었다. 특히 환경친화적인 중금속정화방법은 오염원에 따라 초종선택이 중요하며, Cu오염지역에서는 지상부의 축적량은 처리농도가 높아지더라도 변화가 작은 단풍잎돼지풀은 phytoremediation뿐만 아니라 phytostabilization(식물안정화)을 위한 피복식물로서도 가능성을 보였다.

고온소각에 의한 PCBs 함유 폐기물처리에 관한 연구 (A Study on the PCBs-containing Waste Treatment by High Temperature Incineration)

  • 본 연구는 국내 유해폐기물 고온소각설비를 이용한 PCBs 함유 폐기물의 소각처리 가능성을 알아보기 위해 정상조업시와 PCBs 절연유 투입시의 배가스, 비산재, 바닥재에 대한 다이옥신, Total-PCBs, Co-PCBs 분석을 실시하였으며, 바닥재 및 비산재에 함유된 중금속 성분의 용출 특성을 파악하기 위하여 중금속 용출시험을 실시하였다. 그 결과 PCBs 함유폐기물의 배기가스 중의 Dioxin 농도는 $0.00699{\sim}0.00763ng-TEQ/Nm^3$으로 정상조업시 $0.0192ng-TEQ/Nm^3$보다 낮은 것으로 나타났으며 Co-PCBs $0.00043{\sim}0.00112ng-TEQ/Nm^3$, Total PCBs $3.06{\sim}3.87ng/m^3$으로 분석되었다. 바닥재의 경우에는 Dioxin 0.00225~0.00630ng-TEQ/g, Co-PCBs 0.00027~0.00082ng-TEQ/g, Total PCBs 0.9~2.6ng/g, 비산재의 경우 Dioxin 0.00164~0.00344ng-TEQ/g, Co-PCBs 0.00053~.00054ng- EQ/g, Total PCBs 0.64~0.84ng/g로 나타났다. 바닥재와 비산재의 중금속용출 시험결과 바닥재에서는 모두 용출되지 않았으나, 비산재의 경우 Pb성분이 31.01~237.7ppm으로 용출기준을 초과하는 것으로 나타났으며 대기오염물질의 농도는 모두 배출허용기준치 이하로 나타났다.

건조 ${\cdot}$ 가열처리가 청초호 퇴적물 중 중금속의 화학적 존재형태에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Drying and Heating on the Chemical Species of Heavy Metals in Lake Chungcho Sediments)

  • The chemical forms of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn were analysed by sequential extraction technique to evaluate the effects of drying and heating of dredged sediments from Lake Chungcho. The most abundant fraction of Cd, Cu, and Zn in the wet and untreated sediment was organic/sulfidic fraction that is state in reducing environment such as the bottom condition of Lake Chungcho, while Pb dominated in residual fraction. This means that the source of Cd, Cu, and Zn in the Chungcho lake sediment is related to the organic degradation and Pb to the erosion from surrounding rocks. With drying and oxidation by dredging, heating treatment, and disposal of the lake sediment, the chemical forms of studied metals changed greatly from organic/sulfidic fraction to adsorbed and reducible fractions which are more labile in oxygenated environment. Organic/sulfidic fraction of Cd, Cu and Pb in the wet sediment was transformed with drying and heating treatments to the labile ones like adsorbed and reducible fraction, but Zn to carbonate and reducible fraction. Heating of the sediment at $320^{\circ}C$ greatly increased the labile fraction of Cd and Cu, while that at $105^{\circ}C$ for Pb and Zn. It is believed that the increase in labile forms of heavy metals in the sediments by drying and heating is caused by the contact with oxygen during drying and heating and by the increase of pH of the pore water at the expense of organic/sulfidic fraction. It is concluded that the drying and oxidation currently used in the treatment of dredged sediment can increase labile forms of heavy metals in the sediment, and the potential of the metal availability from the sediment.

포장지역 강우유출수에서의 입자성물질의 입도 분포 및 중금속 특성에 관한 연구 (Characteristics of Particle Size Distribution and Heavy Metal Concentration in Pavement Road Runoff)

  • 본 연구는 고속도로 강우 유출수에서 입도 크기 분포 특성(PSD)을 이해하기 위하여 수행하였다. 경기도내 4곳의 포장도로 지역에서 2번의 강우사상동안 강우유출수 샘플 모니터링을 수행하였고, 시료내 입자의 크기분포를 분석하였다. 또한, 강우량, 유량 및 각 오염물질들을 분석하였다. 시료내 입자의 시간별 변화농도는 강우유출수의 시작 시 높은 값을 보였다가 급속히 감소하였으며 탁도, 총부유물질, BOD, 총질소 및 총인과 같은 오염물질과 유사한 유출경향을 보여주었다. 특히 총부유물질과 탁도와의 높은 상관성을 보여주었다. 강우유출수와 퇴적물내에 포함된 중금속에 있어서 구리, 납, 아연은 높은 농도를 보였으며 대부분의 중금속은 넓이에 대한 부피의 비율이 큰 세립입자에 강하게 결합된 형태로 존재한다.

고속도로 휴게소의 소형소각로에서 배출되는 대기오염물질 조사 (An Investigation for Air Pollutants Emitted from Small-Scale Incinerators in Highway Service Area)

  • The physicochemical properties of solid wastes generated from seven highway service areas, four branch offices, and one construction site were analyzed in concert with air pollutants including heavy metals emitted from near-by small-scale incinerators. The amount of solid wastes generated from highway areas has been increasing with recent increases in the number of highways and passengers. Twelve incinerators examined in this study generally had capacity smaller than 100 kg/hr, most of which were equipped with cyclone for dust removal. It was seen that the concentrations of the gas-phase air pollutants (e.g., SO$_2$, NO$_{x}$, HCl and H$_2$S) were above the acceptable emission standards except one or two sites. CO concentrations at all incinerators were also higher due to incomplete combustion. In addition, particulate matters showed concentration six times higher at their maximum. The results of heavy metal analysis showed that the concentrations of Cu, Cd, and Ni satisfied the emission standards. whereas Pb at one site and Zn at five sites exceeded the standards. Cr measurement results indicated that 9 of 12 incinerators had higher values than the standard; especially one branch office showed nine times higher than normal concentration. In order to satisfy more stringent emission standards in the near future, it is necessary to install air pollution control system and to develop an intensified management plan.n.
