  • This study presents comparison of the air side heat transfer and friction characteristics in a heating condition between Louver fin-tube heat exchangers and aluminum heat exchangers. Experiments are performed for the Louver fin-tube heat exchangers and aluminum heat exchangers using a calorimeter, which is designed based on air-enthalpy method described in ASHRAE standards. The air velocities its are varied from 0.7 to 1.6 m/s with 0.3 m/s interval. A study result shows that the heat transfer performances of aluminum heat exchangers are $40{\sim}80%$ higher than those of Louver fin-tube heat exchangers per unit volume, mass and heat transfer area.

  • The Taguchi method was applied to investigate the effect of design factors on the performance of the shutdown cooling heat exchanger in the SMART-P. This method provided the simulation matrix for the KDESCENT program and an efficient tool for analyzing the simulation results. Levels of the design factors were selected by the effectiveness-NTU method. From 18 runs with the KDESCENT program, it was found that the performance of the system was greatly influenced by the inlet temperature at the shell side and the mass flow rate of the reactor coolant at the tube side. After applying the Taguchi method, we identified the important design factor that should be controlled and designed carefully. This method provides an efficient way to estimate the influence of each design factor on a system performance.

  • The shell and tube heat exchangers installed in the propulsion system test complex (PSTC) at the Naro Space Center heats cryogenic helium to 500 K with a heat transfer oil. As the experimental helium outlet temperature was lower than expected (less than 100 K), the boundary layer effect of the heat transfer oil is predicted to be the cause of the performance deterioration. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was performed to verify where the boundary layer effect exists; however, the boundary layer effect has no significant impact on the performance of the heat exchanger. An alternative method to improve the performance of the heat exchanger by changing the heat transfer oil has been discussed in this paper. The low viscosity and high thermal conductivity at high temperature (~500 K) of heat transfer oil at the shell-side are required to improve the thermal performance of the heat exchanger. The experimental performance of the heat exchanger, used to exchange heat between the cryogenic helium and hot heat transfer oil at the PSTC are summarized in this paper.

  • Ground source heat pump systems are used for heating, ventilating and air-conditioning systems in commercial buildings, schools, and factories because of low operating and maintenance costs. These systems use the earth as a heat source in heating mode and a heat sink in cooling mode. Ground heat exchangers are classified by a horizontal type and vertical type according to the installation method. A horizontal type means that a heat exchanger is laid in the trench bored in 1.2 to 1.8 m depth. The solar heat and the rainwater are affected by the performance of heat exchanger and causes mutual influence among heat exchangers. In this study, to evaluate the performance of straight type, slinky type, and spiral type of horizontal ground heat exchangers designed on 1 RT scale, test sections are buried on the earth and experimental apparatus is installed. Therefore the performance of these is estimated.

  • Today, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is widely used in industry because of the availability of high-performance computers. However, full-scale analysis poses problems owing to the limited resources and time. In this study, the performance and optimal size of a heat exchanger were calculated using the effectiveness-number of transfer units (${\varepsilon}-NTU$) method and a database of characteristics heat exchanger. Information about the geometry and performance of various heat exchangers is collected, and the performance of the heat exchanger is calculated under the given operating conditions. To determine the optimal size of the heat exchanger, a Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used, and MATLAB and REFPROP are used for the calculation.

  • The optimization of design factors on the frosting performance of a fin-tube heat exchanger is carried out using Taguchi method. The fin spacings of the heat exchanger are selected as design factors. Optimum values of the design factors under operating conditions of a household refrigerator/freezer are proposed. The average heat transfer rate and operating time of the optimum models, compared to those of a reference model, are increased at most by $6.5\%$ and $12.9\%$, respectively.

  • The present paper reports the method for evaluation of heat-transfer performance of finned tube heat exchangers in a low Reynolds number regime (Re = $160\~800$) and also reports the data of heat transfer and pressure loss taken from a finned tube heat exchanger with/without vortex generators (VGs) installed as a heat-transfer enhancement device. The evaluation is based on the modified single blow method conducted in a specially designed low Reynolds number duct. Three different test core geometries, i.e., fin only, fin-tube without VGs and that with VGs, are studied here. The data of heat transfer and pressure loss taken from the fin only geometry agree well with the empirical correlations, thus validating the present method as used for low Reynolds number regime. The data taken from the finned tube geometries with and without VGs are presented and compared to examine the effect of VGs in the low Reynolds number regime.

  • Analysis method for the radiation heat transfer from the duct burner flame to the heat exchanger in a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) was presented to supplement the existing thermal design process. Flame on a burner and a heat exchanger were postulated as imaginary planes and flame temperature, surface and emissivity was simplified in a aspect of engineering approach. The calculated local flame radiative heat flux on the heating surface was compared with the heat flux of 3-atomic gas radiation and convection.

  • A thermal analysis method taking into account energy balance in each elements of heat exchanger was introduced. This method has a merit in predicting the temperature field over the heat exchanger in detail. To verify this method, the results were compared with the published ones. The thermal analysis of the radiator in vehicles was also conducted and the results were compared with experimental ones. It is concluded that this method can be used in thermal analysis with relatively small error. When the velocity profile of inlet air is not uniform, the outlet temperature of cooling water is higher than that of uniform velocity profile.

  • The objectives of this paper are to obtain an empirical equations regarding the correlations between heat transfer and pressure drop of oval fin-tube heat exchanger having large diameter using wilson plot method. It was difficult to find any recommendable heat transfer and friction factor correlation available for our large diameter experimental cases. Overall heat transfer coefficients are composed of the heat transfer coefficients both inside and outside tubes. The resulting empirical correlations for the Nui and f-factor are given as $Nu_i=0.0146Re^{0.809}Pr^{0.3}$ and $f=4.366Re^{-0.64}$, respectively. The empirical correlations of the Nui and f-factors were developed for the large diameter oval finned-tube heat exchanger as a function of the Reynolds number. As the EG(Ethylene glycol) and air flow rate increases, the heat transfer rate and pressure drop is increased largely.
