The experiment of thermal performance about closed-wet cooling tower was conducted in this study. A closed cooling tower is a device similar to a general cooling tower, but with cooling tower replaced by a heat exchanger. The test section for this experiment has the process that the cooling water flows from the top of the heat exchanger to the bottom side in the inner part of the tube, and spray water flows in the gravitational direction in the outer side. Air comes in direct contact with the spray water at the outer side of the tube while passing from the lower the upper part having a counterflow to the spray water. The heat transfer pipe used in this experiment is a bare-type tube having an outer diameter of 15.88mm. The heat exchanger is consisted of seven rows and fifteen columns. In this experiment, thermal performance of the cooling tower is derived from overall heat transfer coefficients between the process fluid and sprayed water and volumetric overall mass transfer coefficient between sprayed water and air.
The shell and tube heat exchangers were introduced to apply to a big capacity condenser and a high pressure feed water heater for power plant in the beginning of 1990s. Design and manufacturing technology fur shell and tube heat exchangers have been developed until now. But it is very difficult to calculate the expected performance characteristics of the shell and tube heat exchanger, because there are many design parameters to be considered according to internal structure and the shell side heat transfer mechanism complicately related to the design parameters. Design parameters to be considered in the design stage of shell and tube heat exchanger are shell and tube side fluids, flow rate, inlet and outlet temperature, physical properties, type of heat exchanger, outer diameter, thickness, length of tube, tube arrangement, tube pitch, permissive pressure loss on both sides, type of baffle plate, baffle cutting ratio. The propose of study is an analysis TEMA(Tubular Exchanger Manufacturers Association) E shell and tube heat exchanger performance with changing a number of baffles(3, 5, 7, 9, 11) and tubes(16, 20) and determined optimal baffle spacing.
A conceptual study of an air-cooled heat exchanger is conducted to achieve the long-term passive cooling of an integral reactor. A newly designed air-cooled heat exchanger is introduced in the present study and preliminary thermal sizing is demonstrated. This study mainly focuses on feasibility of an innovative air-cooled heat exchanger to extend the cooling period of the passive residual heat removal system(PRHRS) only in passive manners. A vertical shell-and-tube air-cooled heat exchanger is installed at the top of the emergency cooldown tank(ECT) to collect evaporated steam into condensate, which enables water inventory of the ECT to be kept. Finally, thermal sizing of an air-cooled heat exchanger is presented. The length and the number of tubes required, and also the height of a stack are calculated to remove the designated heat duty. The present study will contribute to an enhancement of the passive safety system of an integral reactor.
Heat exchangers are called with important devices which have been widely used in industrial fields. Therefore, the design method for a heat exchanger is an important study in the aspect of energy saving. In this study, performance analyses for two types of plate and shell heat exchangers having a corrugated trapezoid shape of a chevron angle with $45^{\circ}$, were executed and compared with experiments. For this study, the operation liquids were adopted with non-phase changing water. In the analysis, ${\epsilon}-NTU$ method was used for a plate and shell heat exchanger and a program was constructed. Independent variables for a plate and shell heat exchanger are flow rate and inlet temperature. Compared with experimental data, the accuracy of the developed are ${\pm}2.5%\;and\;{\pm}5%$ at the type A and type B in the heat transfer rate, respectively. In the pressure drop, the accuracy of the proposed program for a plate and shell heat exchanger is within ${\pm}3%$ and 5% error bounds for the type A and type B, respectively.
The leak before break(LBB) concept is difficult to apply to a structure with a thin tube that is immersed in a water environment. A heat exchanger in a nuclear power plant is such a structure. The present paper addresses an application of the LBB concept to a heat exchanger in a nuclear power plant. The minimum leaked coolant amount(approximately 37.9 liters) containing the radioactive material which can activate the radiation detector device installed in near the heat exchanger is assumed. A postulated initial flaw size that can not grow to a critical flaw size within the time period to activate the radiation detector is justified. In this case, the radiation detector can activate the warning signal caused by coolant leakage from initially postulated flaws of the heat exchanger. The nuclear plant can safely shutdown when this occurs. Since the postulated initial flaw size can not grow to the critical flaw size, the structural integrity of the heat exchanger is not impeded. Particularly the informational scenario presented in this paper discusses an actual nuclear plant.
An experimental study was performed to investigate the characteristics of heat transfer in a vertical type fluidized bed shell-and-tube type heat exchanger with corrugated tube. Seven different solid particles having the same volume were circulated in the heat of exchanger. The effects of various parameters such as water flow rates, particle geometries, materials, and corrugated tube geometries were investigated. The present work showed that the higher thermal capacities of materials and the geometries closer to the spherical one have higher heat transfer performances. In addition, heat transfer coefficients in the corrugated tubes were a little higher than those in the smooth tubes.
This study performed a single hole operation method using a balancing well-cross-mixed underground heat exchanger, and conducted thermal performance studies of an SCW-type underground heat exchanger using a two-well. The study attempted to change the existing operating method of the two adjacent SCW underground heat exchangers with one ball each. The SCW-type geothermal heat exchanger is considered to enable up to 20% of bleed discharge at maximum load, which makes groundwater usage unequal. The efficiency factor of the geothermal system was improved by constructing the discharged water by cross-mixing two balancing wells to prevent the discharge of groundwater sources and keep the temperature of the underground heat exchanger constant. As a result of the cooling and heating operation with the existing SCW heat exchange system and the balancing well-cross-mixed heat exchange system, the measured performance coefficient improved by 23% and 12% in cooling and heating operations, respectively. In addition, when operating with a balanced cross-mixing heat exchange system, it has been confirmed that the initial basement temperature is constant with a standard deviation of 0.08 to 0.12℃.
The fluidized solid particles not only increase heat transfer rates but have a cleaning function eliminating contaiminated substances caused from condensate water. An experiment was performed to measure heat transfer rates and pressure drops in a fluidized heat exchanger with circulating solid particle for constant heat transfer rate. As a results, the heat transfer rate increased by 26.9~2.6%, heat transfer coefficient by 11.9~2.7%, and pressure drop by 79.1~10.9% at the gas velocity of 6.1 ~12.1 m/s and solid particle flow rate of 100~50 kg/h with the heat exchanger of H: 50 mm, $D_p=2 in,\; and\;D_{BP}$=30 mm.
Fouling and cleaning tests are performed for a uniquely designed 7,000 ㎉/hr fluidized bed heat exchanger for exhaust gas heat recovery. Fuel rich condition is maintained in the combustor for a limited time period to generate soot that is to be deposited on the heat transfer surfaces (fouling) and 600 Um glass beads are circulated inside the heat exchanger system for cleaning and enhancing the heat transfer performance. According to the present experimental study, performance degradation mode could be monitored and the effect of particle circulation on the heat transfer improvement could be identified. Through the present study, it is demonstrated that circulating particles contribute not only to the fouling reduction in gas side, but also to the heat transfer enhancement of the unit, while other possible aging factors including water side corrosion seemed to contribute to the accumulated performance deterioration.
