  • Systemic heating and cooling air conditioning systems are popular in various industrial fields and even home. Recently, the rate of supply of this kind of multi-heat pump has been increased under ESCO financing supporting system. Generally the heat pumping system has a structural simplicity and easy installation benefits. and has good running efficiency under normal designed condition. But under extreme climate condition (over $+30^{\circ}C$, under $-10^{\circ}C$), this system exposes abnormal power consumption. It causes high progressive electric power rates and resultant peak power capacity of power plant. In this paper, a novel system concept of buffering refrigerant accumulator and constant pressure control system to relieve peak power load is proposed and this system's utility is verified with an prototype experimental system.

  • Recently, ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems have been introduced in many modem buildings which use the annually stable characteristic of underground temperature as one of the renewable energy uses. However, all of GSHP systems cannot achieve high level of energy efficiency and energy-saving, because their performance significantly depends on thermal properties of soil, the condition of groundwater, building loads, etc. In this research, the effect of thermal properties of soil on the performance of GSHP systems has been estimated by a numerical simulation which is coupled with ground heat and water transfer model, ground heat exchanger model and surface heat balance model. The thermal conductivity of soil, the type of soil and the velocity of groundwater flow were used as the calculation parameter in the simulation. A numerical model with a ground heat exchanger was used in the calculation and, their effect on the system performance was estimated through the sensitivity analysis with the developed simulation tool. In the result of simulation, it founds that the faster groundwater flow and the higher heat conductivity the ground has, the more heat exchange rate the system in the site can achieve.

  • The field of the large volume heat exchanger for wasted heat recovery ventilation system is being expanded enormously seeing as the fact that the quantity of reducing energies are huge due to the large volume heat exchanger for wasted heat recovery system at large buildings and factories, which consume large amount of energies while it has been arising huge amount of losses in Korea because of the lack of technology.

  • The heat demand prediction is an essential issue in management of district heating system. Without an accurate prediction through the lead-time period, it might be impossible to make a rational decision on many issues such as heat production scheduling and heat exchange among the plants which are very critical for the district heating company. The heat demand varies with the temperature as well as the time nonlinearly. And the parametric specification of the heat demand model would cause a misspecification bias in prediction. A nonparametric model for the short-term heat demand prediction has been developed as an alternative to avoiding the misspecification error and tested with the actual data. The prediction errors are reasonably small enough to use the model to predict a few hour ahead heat demand.

  • This study investigate experimentally the effect of in height, thickness, and clearance on the boiling heat transfer. The heat surfaces having copper fin array is tested for pool boiling. The gas-liquid exchange interference is investigated based on fin array clearance. These test results can be applied to the design of tube bundle system. The fin height of 2 mm is found to be effective. Effects of heat transfer promotion reaches the highest level when the fin clearance is 0.5mm. Also, heat flux is increased when the fin thickness is smaller. But0.2 mm fin thickness is highly recommended.

  • A solar hot water storage tank was designed and constructed to examine the heat exchange performances on load side for the solar thermal storage in a single loop solar water heating system. In the tank helically coiled tube was immersed. The hot water was circulated from either top or bottom. The circulation flow rate was varied from 500 ml/min to 20,000 ml/min. The effect of flow rate was observed. The thermal performances according to the flow rate and flow direction were examined. The temperature distributions in the tank and inside of the tubes were plotted along the process of cooling.

  • The shell and tube heat exchangers installed in the propulsion system test complex (PSTC) at the Naro Space Center heats cryogenic helium to 500 K with a heat transfer oil. As the experimental helium outlet temperature was lower than expected (less than 100 K), the boundary layer effect of the heat transfer oil is predicted to be the cause of the performance deterioration. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was performed to verify where the boundary layer effect exists; however, the boundary layer effect has no significant impact on the performance of the heat exchanger. An alternative method to improve the performance of the heat exchanger by changing the heat transfer oil has been discussed in this paper. The low viscosity and high thermal conductivity at high temperature (~500 K) of heat transfer oil at the shell-side are required to improve the thermal performance of the heat exchanger. The experimental performance of the heat exchanger, used to exchange heat between the cryogenic helium and hot heat transfer oil at the PSTC are summarized in this paper.

  • The growing market for geothermal heat pump system requires great consideration of quality control and assurance in design and construction. The borehole heat exchanger of GHP system should be sustainable, economical and ecological. Thermal Response Test (TRT) is a useful method for site investigation to obtain reliable data for a optimal system design from the technical and economical aspect. Intensive researches combined with exchange of experiences on an international level within the IEA ECES Annex 21 improved the technology. Major subjects on the interpretation of TRT are development of improved evaluation models, evaluation of the TRT with respect to geological layers and investigation of the influence of ground water. Current status of TRT in South Korea, as well as a new version of the Korean TRT standard test procedure was presented. TRT is mostly used for governmental supported projects with corresponds to more than 100 GCHP systems per year. More than 200 tests are applied, mostly on single U-tube heat exchangers (about 95%). Bentonite is the most common grouting to be used. KIGAM (Korea Institute of Geoscience & Mineral Resources) is also keeping a GIS geological and geothermal database. In the institute also laboratory measurements of rock properties are carried out. About 90% of the laboratory measurements of the rock heat conductivity shows higher values than the in-situ TRT.

  • Cooled EGR system is an effective method for the reduction of $NO_x$ emission and PM emission from a diesel engine. Proper choice of wavy cooling fins and gas tubes is a key factor of cooled EGR system. As a part of solutions for energy crisis and environmental problems, hybrid vehicles mounted with diesel engines are under development globally. This study investigates the cooled EGR systems for hybrid diesel engine with the specifications of both optimized wavy cooling fins and improved shape of structure to verify the heat exchange efficiency, outlet temperature and gas pressure drop of cooler by means of numerical analyses and rig performance tests. The output of this study will be applied to a 2.0L hybrid diesel engine which is being developed for domestic and overseas market.

  • The proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is regarded as the most promising alternative power sources for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) due to its high energy density and silent operation. Since there are many load changes during UAV flight, thermal management is one of the important factor for the performance of PEMFC. In order to reduce the UAV weight for the stable operation of UAV, thermal management system (TMS) studied in this work does not use the fan but use the air flowing into UAV by UAV flight. In order to develop the passive type heat exchanger (HEX) for 1kW PEMFC, four types of HEXs are fabricated and their cooling performances are compared. The parametric study on the cooling performance of HEXs has performed with the variation of operating parameters such as mass flow rates and inlet temperature of air and coolant. Type 4 has the best performance in every case. This study can be helpful to achieve the optimal design of HEX for PEMFC powered UAV.
