To increase the enthalpy exchange efficiency of ERV elements, the moisture exchange character must be improved. The moisture exchange efficiency depends on material characteristics. The material used for ERV is Hwang-to paper based on Han-ji which is Korean traditional paper. The paper has excellent performance in moisture exchange and heat transfer compared with polymer and other papers. To have an anti bacteria performance and to improve moisture exchange performance of Han-ji, Hwang-to is added to the Han-ji. The enthalpy exchange efficiency of the Hwang-to paper shows 5% greater than that of the conventional paper. In case of Escherichia Coli, the reduction rate of bacteria is 96.6% and in case of Pseudomonas, the reduction rate of bacteria is 97.5%. The ERV element made of Hwang-to paper has a great possibility as an ERV element.
Ground-coupled heat pump system has attracted attention as a promising renewable energy technology due to its improving energy efficiency and eco-friendly mechanism for space cooling and heating. Pipes buried in the ground play a role of direct thermal interaction between circulating fluid inside the pipe and surrounding soils in the geothermal exchange system. However, both complexities of turbulent flow coupling thermal-hydraulic phenomena and very long aspect ratio of the pipe make it difficult to model the heat exchange system directly. Energy balance for fluid flow inside the pipe was derived to model thermal-hydraulic phenomena, and one-dimensional pipe element was proposed through Galerkin formation and time integration of the equation. Developed element is combined to pre-developed FEM code for THM phenomena in porous media. Numerical results of Thermal Response Test showed that line-source model overestimates equivalent thermal conductivity of surrounding soils due to thermal interaction between adjacent pipes and finite length of the pipe. Thus, inverse analysis for the TRT simulation was conducted to present optimal transformation matrix with utmost convergence.

Heat generation rate in a telecommunication cabinet increases due to the continued usage of mobile devices. Insufficient removal of heat intensifies the cabinet temperature, resulting in the malfunction of electronic devices. In this study, we assessed both aluminum and plastic heat exchangers used for cooling of the telecommunication cabinet, and compared the results against theoretical predictions. The aluminum heat exchanger was composed of counter flow parallel channels of 4.5 mm pitch, and the plastic heat exchangers were composed of cross flow triangular channels of 2.0 mm pitch. Samples were made by installing two plastic heat exchangers in both series and parallel. Results showed that the heat transfer rate was highest for the series cross flow heat exchanger, and was least for the aluminum heat exchanger. The temperature efficiency of the series cross flow heat exchanger was 59% greater than that of the aluminum heat exchanger, and was 4.3% greater than that of the parallel cross flow heat exchanger. In contrast, the pressure drop of the parallel cross flow heat exchanger was significantly lower than other samples. The heat exchange efficiency was also the largest for the parallel cross flow heat exchanger. The theoretical analysis predicted the temperature efficiency to be within 3.3%, and the pressure drop within 6.1%.

A conventional EGR cooler, which is used in an EGR system of an automobile diesel engine, has a low heat-exchange efficiency. To maximize the heat transfer between the exhaust gas and coolant, dimples are formed on the surface of heat exchange tubes. When designing the dimpled EGR cooler, the net heat transfer areas in the conventional and dimpled tube-type EGR coolers are compared. Structural integrity evaluations are also performed by combining finite element analysis with a homogenization method. Subsequently, the process of manufacturing the dimpled tube, i.e., the formation of dimples, edge bending, center v-notch bending, compression, and plasma welding, is established and carried out. Thus, the dimpled EGR cooler is developed, and its performance is verified.
The use of energy pile foundation has increased for economic utilization of geothermal energy. In particular, coil-shaped ground heat exchanger (GHE) is preferred to the conventional U-shaped exchanger to ensure better efficiency of heat exchange rate. This paper presents a numerical and experimental study on the heat transfer behavior of PHC energy piles. Field thermal performance tests (TPTs) were conducted for the PHC energy piles installed in a partially saturated weathered granite soil deposit, in which two types of GHEs were considered: W and coil shaped GHEs. Besides, three-dimensional finite element analyses were also conducted, and the results were compared with the experimental results. According to the results of TPT and numerical analyses, the coil shaped GHE showed 10~15% higher heat exchange rate than the W type GHE in the PHC energy piles.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the mount of relief of human solar heat load and thermal comfort in outdoor environment in summer, Six different types of sites, T garden and its neighboring area in Japan, were selected as the experiment sites. The experiments were conducted from 22 to 29 August, 1994 to find the relationship between climatic conditions and human responses, Climatic conditions, subjects's thermal sensation and skin temperature were measured. Radiant heat exchange on the human body was estimated on the basis of the measured air and surface temperature and solar radiation. Thermal index Operative Temperature and New Effective Temperature was modified with the effect of the radiant heat exchange. Human thermal comfort and skin temperature is affected by the solar radiation and the sky factor in an outdoor environment. The effect of tree shade was verified on thermal comfort, The mount of relief of human solar heat load is relation to the existence of shade a solar radiation and the sky factor. The urban garden is one of the effective design element in an urban environmental planning.

Most of vehicle manufacturers have applied exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system to the development of diesel engines in order to obtain the high thermal efficiency without $NO_X$ and Particulate Matter (PM) emitted from the engine. EGR system, which reflow a cooled exhaust gas from vehicles burning diesel as fuel to a combustion chamber of engine, has been used to solve this problem. In order to confirm the safety of the EGR system, finite element analysis was carried out. The safety of EGR system against temperature variation in the shell and tubes was evaluated through the thermal and structural analysis, and the modal analysis using ANSYS was also performed. Finally, the performance of EGR system was verified through the experiment and numerical simulation using effectiveness-NTU method. Program for the estimation of the heat exchange efficiency of the EGR system with regard to the dimpled tube shape was developed.

The energy pile, used for both structural foundations and heat exchangers, brings about heat exchange with the ground formation by circulating a working fluid for heating and cooling buildings. As heat exchange occurs in the energy pile, thermal stress and strain is generated in the pile body and surrounding ground formation. In order to investigate the thermo-mechanical behavior of an energy pile, a comprehensive experimental program was conducted, monitoring the thermal stress of a cast-in place energy pile equipped with five pairs of U-type heat exchanger pipes. The heating and cooling simulation both continued for 30 days. The thermal strain in the longitudinal direction of the energy pile was monitored for a 15 operation days and another 15 days monitoring followed, without the application of heat exchange. In addition, a finite element model was developed to simulate the thermo-mechanical behavior of the energy pile. A non-linear contact model was adopted to interpret the interaction at the pile-soil interface, and thermal-induced structure mechanics was considered to handle the thermo-mechanical coupled multi-field problem.

In order to better save energy, many buildings have been constructed with high levels of insulation and airtightness in recent years. Additionally, having high quality indoor air has become more relevant, necessitating a ventilating system. This study is aimed at evaluating the performance of a humidity exchanger through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of elements for the purpose of providing comfortable indoor air and reduced energy consumption. The simulation was conducted with three different shapes (triangle, rectangular, and curve) of heat exchanger elements, in order to find the most effective element. A follow-up simulation then proved the efficiency of the chosen humidity exchanger, which was selected by analyzing the results of the preceding simulation, comparing study data with measurement data from the Korea Testing Laboratory (KTL). The resulting analysis revealed that the rectangular element showed the lowest level of efficiency in both heating and cooling, while the curved element showed the highest level of efficiency in both heating and cooling.

The usual methods for the temperature control of mass-concrete structures include the use of low-heat cement, pre-cooling, or pipe-cooling. In order to control the heat of hydration of mass-concrete structures such as massive pier or anchor block, and mat foundation, the pipe cooling method is widely acceptable for pratical use. In this paper, method of analysis using the Finite Element Method was applied to analyze the heat exchange on the field of three dimensional thermal conduction. The result of analysis Well agreed with experimentally measurement data by "KUMATANI". The method of this analysis will be used widely to control the heat of hydration by the pipe cooling in mass-concrete.-concrete.
