  • This paper presents the effects of the tube materials on the heat transfer performance of double-tube heat exchangers for the development of heat exchangers using deep sea water. Heat exchangers made of titanium, aluminum. stainless steel, iron, copper, and aluminum with carbon black 0.015mm and 0.15mm coating were tested. Also, the heat transfer rate of each heat exchanger was calculated by using EES program. The calculated values were compared with the experimental ones, and the deviations were less than 10%. From the above experiment and analysis, aluminum with carbon black 15 coating can be considered the most promising candidate for the replacement of titanium heat exchanger.

  • This paper presents the effects of the tube materials and corrosion on the heat transfer performance of double-tube heat exchangers for the development of heat exchangers using deep sea water. Heat exchangers made of titanium, aluminum. stainless steel, iron, copper, and aluminum with electro-deposition coatings(Carbon black_$15{\mu}m$, Carbon black_$150{\mu}m$) were tested. Also, the heat transfer rate of each heat exchanger was calculated by using EES program. For the acceleration of corrosion by sea water, the temperature of sea water $70^{\circ}C$ and the concentration of salt 3.5% were considered. And the specimens were immersed in sea water during 6 weeks. From the above experiment and analysis, aluminum with electro-deposition coating(Carbon black_$150{\mu}m$) can be considered the most promising candidate for the replacement of titanium heat exchanger.

  • In most engineering applications related with the heat conduction phenomena, a conventional Fourier heat conduction equation has been successfully applied and it has supplied quite reasonable results. However, it is well known that the Fourier heat conduction equation is failed in the application to the extremely small space and short time, in other words, a nano-scale system and a pico-second time. In this study, non-Fourier effect was evaluated in the heat conduction by considering the concept of a phase lag model. The results show the existence of a heat wave, which means that the heat is transferred with a finite speed while an infinite speed of heat transfer is assumed in the conventional Fourier heat conduction. In addition, the copper and the gold are tested to evaluate the phase lag time between the heat flux and the temperature gradient. The results show that the gold has the heat wave speed faster than that of the copper consistent with the prediction based on an actual experiment.

  • This paper presents a modelling of thermal discharge performance for a static ice-on-coil ice-storage tank. Through the present study, discharging characteristics were examined with the existing results of theoretical and numerical heat transfer analyses. Also, an experiment was conducted to obtain a real set of discharge performance. The thermal effectiveness, the ratio of the actual heat transfer rate to the maximum possible heat transfer rate, decreased when the stored energy decreased during discharging period. And the effectiveness increased as the coolant flow rate through the storage increased, of which increasing rate decreased abruptly near the maximum and the minimum stored energy. An empirical correlation was obtained from the experimental and the numerical analysis data.

  • In the present study, the correlation between the Nusselt number and Reynolds number was developed for forced convection and nucleate boiling region in spray cooling. Also the effect of droplet subcooling on spray cooling heat transfer was investigated. Full cone spray nozzles were employed for spray cooling experiment, and water and FC-77 were used for developing the correlation. From the experimental results, the correlation between the Nusselt number and Reynolds number based on droplet-flow-rate was developed. The correlation shows good predictions with ${\pm}30%$ error for water and FC-77.

  • This study concerns flow and heat transfer characteristics of FC-72 condensing flow in a micro-channel. A computational model of condensing flow with a hydraulic diameter of 1 mm is constructed using the FLUENT computational fluid dynamics code. The computed void fraction contour plots are presented for different mass velocities. The smooth-annular, wavy-annular, transition and slug flows are observed with the model, which are quite similar to those observed in a micro-channel experiment. The computed two-phase condensing heat transfer coefficient is compared with previous empirical correlation for two-phase condensation heat transfer in micro-channels.

  • Heat transfer experiment is carried out during the performance test of the 4-cylinder 4-stroke cycle turbo-charged gasoline engine. Cycle simulation employing the measured pressure in cylinder, the cooling water temperature and flow rate and others is carried out in order to calculate the gas temperature in cylinder. In this simulation combustion process was simulated by Annand's two zone model and suction, compression, and other processes are calculated completely. From this simulation, we can obtain not only the heat transfer coefficient but also the flame speed, turbulent burning velocity, flame factor and the boiling condition of cooling passage. The results are investigated with engine speed, equivalence ratio and spark advance.

  • The measurements of heat transfer and pressure drop were performed on ripple tube with air flow. The results with the tube were compared with the performance of smooth tube. The enhancements in heat transfer coefficient for ripple tube, being compared with smooth tube, was ranged from 7.4 to 39 percent. The local Nusselt number for the inner fin tube, being compared with that for smooth tube, varied from 7.4% to 39%, while the corresponding increase in friction factors were 4.1 to 8.1%. One of the most direct indications of Nusselt number of ripple tube is given as following equation: $$Nu=0.061Re^{0.75}Pr^{0.4}(Tb/Tw)^{0.5}$$ We can see that Nusselt number for ripple tube in this experiment is consistent with the theoretical one taken from Walkinson's equation at Reynolds number range from 8,000 to 20,000.

  • The laminar convection heat transfer in a ventilated space with various horizontal partitions was studied numerically and experimentally. The experimental results by holographic interferometer showed good agreements with the numerical results. For the numerical study, the governing equations were solved by using a finite volume method for $46.6\leqRe\leq1332,\;1460\leqGr\leql1585$, Pr=0.71 and the variations of partition lengths. The isotherms and velocity vectors have been represented for various parameters. As the length of partition increases, the convection heat transfer decreases. Based on the numerical data, a correlation was obtained for the dimensionless mean Nusselt number in terms of $Gr/Re^2$. In the region of $Gr/Re^2$<1, the mean Nusselt number was very small, but in the region of $Gr/Re^2\geq1$, the mean Nusselt number was constant.
