  • The purpose of the present study was to elucidate such a relationship by comparing the indices of obesity, liver function, and hyperlipidemia with & without fatty liver by using data from health check-up for the adult males in a university hospital. Study subjects were 772 adult males of 30 years and over, who underwent health package check-up at the health promotion center of a university hospital. The prevalence rates of fatty liver of study subjects were 25.5%, and this study shows that fatty liver by abdominal ultrasound has a close correlation with indices of obesity(body weight, BMI, body fat, waist to hip ratio, & waist to stature ratio), liver function(AST, ALT,& GGT), and hyperlipidemia(TG, TC, & HDL-C), and that was independent of age that was relevant.

  • Objectives: Cancer is the most frequent cause of death in Korea. Cancer screenings can save lives through early detection and their effect can be enhanced by regular repeat adherence rather than one-time screening. The aim of this study was to investigate major cancer screening rates and the reasons for not having screening for providing the basic data required. Materials and Methods: The study sample were recruited from the parents of students in 3 different middle and high schools in Pusan. 428 participants(l93 of males, 214 of females) completed a structured self-administered questionnaire from Dec. 21 to 31, 2001 and the response rate was 73.8%. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics with SPSS Win 10.0. Results: The cancer screening rates of the subjects(male and female respectively) who have had one or more in their life-time were about 36.3% and 34.6% in gastroendoscopy for stomach cancer, about 11.1 % and 8.5% in stool hemocult test and colonoscopy for colon cancer, 13.5% and 9.3% in prostate-antigen test and rectal digit exam for prostate cancer, 36.4% in mammograpy for breast cancer, and 59.3% in Pap smear test for cervical cancer. And the higher proportions of having regular screening were 36.0% in Pap smear test for cervical cancer and 11.7% in mammograpy for breast cancer. The reasons related to not having screening tests were found that ‘seem to be healthy’ was 44.8%∼58.9% and the most common reason and the following was ‘not having opportunity for check-up’. The most common reason related to not having regular screening tests were ‘for the finding of previous check-up was normal’.

  • Purpose. To investigate the differences in the frequency of post-fitting denture check-ups based on gender, age, insurance status, denture arch, and type among patients aged 65 and above. Methods. This research analyzed 988 patients from National Health Insurance Service Ilsan Hospital's Department of Prosthodontics, who had denture fittings over the last 10 years. Variables including gender, age, insurance status and type, denture arch, and denture type were assessed. Statistical analyses were performed at a 5% significance level. Results. The study incorporated 988 dentures, revealing a median of 3 check-ups post-fitting. Male patients significantly had more visits than females (P = .017), and those with full metal dentures visited significantly more than those with partial dentures (P = .005). Other variables were not significantly influential on the post-fitting check-up frequency. Conclusion. Within this study's confines, an increase in denture adjustment sessions was observed for male patients and those with full metal dentures.

  • In this study, a computerized nutritional and health guide program for workers was developed. The dietitian at the work site could utilize periodically conducted medical examination data to develop an effective health care counseling model based on the developed Nutritional and Health Guide Program. A personal computer (Pentium II PC MMX-150, 32MB RAM, 2.95 GB HDD) with Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 Enterprise Edition and Microsoft Access 97 installed, was used. The Nutritional and Health Guide Program consisted of seven main menus and 43 sub-menus. Included in the main menu were Basic Information, Periodic Health Check-ups, Visitors' Consultations, Nutritional/Health Tips, Nutritional Education according to Diseases, Help and Exit. In the Periodic Health Check-up menu, dieticians could input the health examination data of employees and touch for the recommended treatments for diseases such as obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension and hepatitis. The Visitors'Consultation menu has been designed to compile health information about the employees who sought consultations. The Nutritional/Health Tips menu was designed to provide 14 kinds of programmed nutritional educational media and information. In the Nutritional Education According to Diseases menu, the dietitian could judge the subject's willingness to obtain treatment based on the Stage of Change Model. According, the content of the administered respective nutritional education was classified by stages. The Help menu, provide a chart of the method and procedure used as nutritional guidelines, by which the results of the health examination were classified as people in good health and those requiring special medical attention. The results of the evaluation of this program showed highly positive rates for usefulness (4.09), convenience (4.04), lettering size (4.02), interest (3.93), design (3.49). It also showed that 97.5% of the subjects thought that this program would be helpful for implementation of their company's nutritional educational program. Therefore, this menu could help dietitians plan, conduct, and evaluate their nutritional guidelines for employees. It is expected that The Nutritional and Health Guide Program developed in this study will play a role as a scientific and effective guide in conjunction with health examination results.

The prevalence of thyroid disfunction was high in elderly people and women like in western countries. The results were as follows; 1. The prevalence of overt hyperthyroidism was 4.8/1,000 population (men 4.1/1,000, women 5.9/1,000) and was higher in women than in men. 2. The prevalence of subclinical hyperthyroidism was 10.7/1,000 population (men 9.0/1,000, women 13.2/1,000) with peak prevalence at the age group 50, 60 and was higher in women than in men. 3. The prevalence of overt hypothyroidism was 0.5/1,000 population (men 0.5/1,000, women 0.5/1,000). The prevalence increased with age and was significantly higher in women in the age group over 60 years. 4. The prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism was 12.6/1,000 population (men 6.0/1,000, women 22.7/1,000) and was as high as about 4 times in women than in men. 5. The prevalence of thyroid dysfunction was higher in women than in men in all the age groups, and was higher in the age group 50, 60 years than in any other age group.

  • Background/Aims Functional dyspepsia (FD) is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders, and FD imposes social and economic burden worldwide. The aim of this study is to identify the prevalence and risk factors of FD in health check-up population in tertiary centers in Korea. Methods A nationwide multicenter prospective study was performed at 9 tertiary healthcare centers in Korea between September 2016 and June 2017. A total of 2525 subjects were investigated based on endoscopic findings and questionnaires with the Rome III criteria, and Helicobacter pylori serology (IgG). Results A total of 1714 subjects without organic disease were enrolled. The mean (${\pm}SD$) age was 51.5 (${\pm}12.7$) years, and 917 patients (53.5%) were female. The proportion of H. pylori seropositivity was 51.0% (874/1714). The prevalence of FD was 10.3% (176/1714), and the subtypes of postprandial distress syndrome alone, epigastric pain syndrome alone, and postprandial distress syndromeepigastric pain syndrome overlap were 4.8%, 3.0%, and 2.5%, respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that female gender (OR, 1.58; 95% CI, 1.14-2.21) and education below college level (OR, 1.45; 95% CI, 1.01-2.07) were related to FD. Multivariate analysis based on age 60 showed female gender as a significant (OR, 2.90; 95% CI, 1.06-7.94) factor in the group ${\geq}60$ years. Conclusions The prevalence of FD was 10.3% in the health check-up population in Korea. Female sex and education below college level were risk factors for FD. Female sex is a risk factor for FD in old age, underscoring the need for close attention in this age group.
