Community residents are tend to evade waste treatment facilities such as waste landfills, waste incinerators. Therefore, decision-makers of waste management are concerned about the reduction and recycling of food garbage. As a treatment alternative of food garbage which consists of 30% of municipal waste, producing compost and feed stuff from food garbage is environmentally amenable. In considering the characteristics of food garbage are putrid and high moisturized, methods of landfilling and incineration for food garbage are environmentally inadequate. For the institutionalization of food garbage recycling, separate discharge, establishment of collection system, securing of market for compost and feed stuff manufactured from food garbage, and tax and financial incentives for food garbage recycling facilities are necessary.

In this study we investigated the elution level of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), antimony (Sb), germanium (Ge), aluminum (Al) and hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) from 69 home-cooking utensils into a food stimulants. The results of migration testing according to the Korea standards and specifications for utensils, containers and packages showed values the allowable migrantion limits. Al was detected in all 7 utensil materials with the average concentration ranging from 0.002-5.989 mg/L. According to the migration conditions for (180℃, 30 min), the average concentration of Al in paper was 7.2 times higher than 25℃, 10 min (P<0.05). The results of migration testing at 180℃, 30 min were also below the allowable migrantion limits. When comparing with the provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) of Al, the estimated weekly intakes (EWI) accounted for 0.000-0.045% for Al.
This study evaluated the migrant and residue tests of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), arsenic (As), and antimony (Sb) in 70 tumbler samples. The migration levels of hazardous metals in all the samples were within the migration limits outlined in the Korean standards and specifications for utensils, containers, and packages. Moreover, in all the tumbler samples, only Ni was detected in 0.5% citric acid solution of a food stimulant. The maximum level of Ni 0.0144 mg/L was 14.4% of the migrant specification (not more than 0.1 mg/L), which was relatively safe. The 0.5% citric acid solution was eluted at 4℃, 70℃, and 100℃ for 30 min, and only Ni was detected while testing for migration levels according to the temperature variations; all temperature conditions conformed to the standards. The level of Ni migration increased significantly with increasing migration temperature. Regarding the residue level outside the paint-coated tumbler samples, the Pb level was found to range from N.D. to 20638.1323 mg/kg. The risk of Ni was further estimated to be at a safe level of 0.00 to 0.01% compared to the %TDI as a result.
The purpose of this study is to analyze city residents' preference to experiencing activities for Green Tourism. A Questionnaire survey was conducted in fall, 2006. The sum of 515 copies was analyzed. Residents of Daegu city preferred 'health/leports experience' and 'traditional food experience', among theme experiential activities. By the result of cross-table analysis, there are many differences between groups by gender & age. Men preferred 'health/leports experience', while women preferred 'traditional food experience'. The mean values of preference by 14 experiencing activities showed high at 'health experience', 'traditional food experience', 'leports experience', which represents health & wellbeing trends. By the result of t-test & ANOVA, there also are many differences between groups by gender & age. Especially significant differences were shown by age group. Three factors were categorized. 'traditional/wellbeing/health experience', 'nature-play experience' and 'life-culture experience' were those.
This study was performed to confirm the physicochemical properties and physiological activities according to cultivar and parts of Ulsan sweet persimmons. The proximate composition of the sweet persimmons was moisture $77.68{\sim}84.65%$, crude ash $0.3{\sim}0.6$, crude fat $0.29{\sim}0.39$ and crude protein $0.52{\sim}0.61%$. Confirmed organic acids and free sugars in sweet persimmons were malic, citric, succinic, and fumaric acids, along with fructose, glucose and sucrose. The major fatty acids were linolenic, vaccenic and palmitic acids. Also, K is the highest mineral in sweet persimmons that accounts for the majority of mineral, more than 60% as $84.9{\sim}103.7mg%$. Contents of vitamin C, total phenolic compounds and flavonoids were the highest in Fuyu peel as 139.91, 169.36 and 60.79mg%, respectively, Electron donating ability and xanthine oxidase inhibition were the highest in Fuyu peel as $30.6{\sim}91.2$ and $26.3{\sim}91.9mg%$, respectively. Nitrite scavenging activity was higher in peel than flesh as $51.0{\sim}76.4mg%$ with slight difference depending on cultivar.

This study was conducted to determine 10 preservatives (benzyl alcohol (BAl), phenoxyethanol (PE), benzoic acid (BA), sorbic acid (SA), methyl paraben (MP), ethyl paraben (EP), propyl paraben (PP), isopropyl paraben (IPP), butyl paraben (BP), isobutyl paraben (IBP)) levels in 125 cosmetics (n = 125) for children by the simultaneous analysis of HPLC. The detection ranges were as follows; 0.01 ~ 0.91% (n = 35) for PE, 0.01 ~ 0.48% (n = 28) for BA, 0.01 ~ 0.78% (n = 9) for BAl, 0.01 ~ 0.11% (n = 3) for SA, 0.04 ~ 0.21% (n = 8) for MP, 0.02 ~ 0.09% (n = 8) for PP, and 0.04% (n = 1) for EP. The order of detection rates was cleanser (63%) > cream (48%) > sunscreen (46%) > lotion (38%) > oil (13%). At least one of target preservatives was contained in 50% (63/125) of samples and the content of the detected preservatives was within maximum allowed amount established by KFDA. Phenoxyethanol and benzoic acid were used more frequently than paraoxybenzoate esters (parabens) in cosmetics for children and the detected parabens was mainly the mixture of methyl paraben and propyl paraben.
Since Korean housewives are responsible for the dietary practices of family at home, it is important to know what information will make them to buy safe food. This study was designed to determine the role of perceived threats, behavioral assessments, and self-efficacy factors known to promote healthy behavior in health belief models (HBM) based on food safety awareness and behavior of housewives. This study involved 191 housewives, based on key variables such as perceived severity, perceived susceptibility, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, self-efficacy, and purchase behavior. The results showed that higher levels of education and urbanization increased the threat perception and the likelihood of buying safe food. The correlation analysis showed that increased awareness and knowledge of safe foods and interest in health contributed to higher relative benefit or self-efficiency of food, and thus, ensured food safety. The conceptual model of food safety behavior based on the HBM was verified via structural equation analysis. The findings suggest that a suitable model showcasing knowledge levels and relative benefits resulted in a greater impact on purchasing behavior than perceived threats. This study suggests that it is more effective for housewives to provide more preventive information than risk information to purchase safe food.
This study was carried out to investigate the food habit and health status of housewives in rural area of Gyonggi Province. The subjects of this study were 121 rural housewives and interviewed with a questionnaire. The results were as follows 1. In food habit items, the mean of Kimchi intake ($4.89\pm0.38$) was the highest, while that of meat processed food intake ($2.12\pm1.07$) was the lowest. The average of food habit score was $53.1\pm7.7$(out of 80) and was not significantly different with educational level, income, family type, size and agricultural type. In age, older subjects had low score. In regular mealtime, 74.4% of subjects had high score. The subjects that had good appetite were 49.6%. 2. The average of height and weight were 156.99cm and 55.5kg respectively. The appeal ratio in THI items was high in the order of musculoskeletal pain (1.62), tired (1.88), eye-fatigued (1.91), mental instability (2.03) and depression (2.07). The average of THI score was $32.7\pm5.5$(out of 45) and was not significantly different with educational level, income, family type and size, but the subjects of younger and nonagricultural belonged to high score level. The percentage of subjects in normal blood pressure, obesity and retained disease at present were 66.9%, 6.1% and 23.1% respectively. There was no significant difference except for good appetite in the relation among food habit, obesity and blood pressure. Food habit score was not significantly different with THI score, but health status seemed to be good in the better food habit.
Objectives: There has been a great amount of controversy in the food industry over the effectiveness of using gloves. The objectives of this study were to examine the microbial contamination of food handlers' hands and determine if using gloves could ensure safe handling of foods. Methods: Samples were collected through the glove-juice method from the bare and gloved hands of food handlers at work and were analyzed for the presence of aerobic plate counts, total coliform, fecal coliform, Escherichiacoli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella spp. Microbiological testing was conducted according to the Food Code of Korea. Results: Microbial contamination was consistently higher with bare hands than with gloved hands, although the microbial loads on both hands increased over time. Under certain conditions, there were significant differences between the bacterial loads on bare and on gloved hands (p<0.05). E. coli, S. aureus, and Salmonella spp. were still alive on both bare and gloved hands at the time the food handlers finished their work. Conclusions: Wearing gloves was associated with a marked reduction of bacterial contamination of the hands. However, the practice of continuously wearing gloves during food handling increases the potential for cross-contamination of bacteria. The findings of this study emphasize the need for a rational use of gloves, and strict adherence to hand hygiene compliance among food handlers.
