Emotion is getting one of the important elements of the intelligent service robots. Emotional communication can make more comfortable relation between humans and robots. We developed emotional head robot system using 3D character. We designed emotional engine for making emotion of the robot. The results of face recognition and hand recognition is used for the input data of emotional engine. 3D character expresses nine emotions and speaks about own emotional status. The head robot has memory of a degree of attraction. It can be chaIU!ed by input data. We tested the head robot and conform its functions.
A telerobot offers a more engaging and enjoyable interaction with people at a distance by communicating via audio, video, expressive gestures, body pose and proxemics. To provide its potential benefits at a reasonable cost, this paper presents a telepresence robot system for video communication which can deliver speaker's head motion through its display stanchion. Head gestures such as nodding and head-shaking can give crucial information during conversation. We also can assume a speaker's eye-gaze, which is known as one of the key non-verbal signals for interaction, from his/her head pose. In order to develop an efficient head tracking method, a 3D cylinder-like head model is employed and the Harris corner detector is combined with the Lucas-Kanade optical flow that is known to be suitable for extracting 3D motion information of the model. Especially, a skin color-based face detection algorithm is proposed to achieve robust performance upon variant directions while maintaining reasonable computational cost. The performance of the proposed head tracking algorithm is verified through the experiments using BU's standard data sets. A design of robot platform is also described as well as the design of supporting systems such as video transmission and robot control interfaces.
In this paper, we propose a two-degree-of-freedom snake robot head system and an I-PID (Intelligent Proportional-Integral-Derivative)-based controller utilizing RBF (Radial Basis Function) neural network and adaptive robust terms as a control strategy to reduce rotation occurring in the snake robot head. This study proposes a two-degree-of-freedom snake robot head system to avoid complex snake robot dynamics. This system has a control system independent of the snake robot. Subsequently, it utilizes an I-PID controller to implement a control system that can effectively manage rotation at the snake robot head, the robot's nonlinearity, and disturbances. To compensate for the time delay estimation errors occurring in the I-PID control system, an RBF neural network is integrated. Additionally, an adaptive robust term is designed and integrated into the control system to enhance robustness and generate control inputs responsive to signal changes. The proposed controller satisfies stability according to Lyapunov's theory. The proposed control strategy was tested using a 9-degreeof-freedom snake robot. It demonstrates the capability to reduce rotation in Lateral undulation, Rectilinear, and Sidewinding locomotion.

While various methods for sound source localization have been developed, most of them utilize on the time difference of arrival (TDOA) between microphones or the measured head related transfer functions (HRTF). In case of a real robot implementation, the former has a merit of light computation load to estimate the sound direction but can not consider the effect of platform on TDOAs, while the latter can, because characteristics of robot platform are included in HRTF. However, the latter needs large resources for the HRTF database of a specific robot platform. We propose the compensation method which has the light computation load while the effect of platform on TDOA can be taken into account. The proposed method is used with spherical head related transfer function (SHRTF) on the assumption that robot platform, for example a robot head, installed microphones can be modeled to a sphere. We verify that the proposed method decreases the estimation error caused by the robot platform through the simulation and experiment in real environment.

When external force is applied to humanoid robot's head, humanoid robot's neck is rotated to prevent the damage of it. So, robot's neck have to perceive forces (Fx of x-direction, Fy of y-direction and Fz of z-direction) and moments (Mx of x-direction, My of y-direction and Mz of z-direction) using the attached 6-axis force/moment sensor. Thus, in this paper, 6-axis force/moment sensor was developed to sense the forces and moments applied to robot's head. The structure of 6-axis force/moment sensor was modeled newly, and it was designed using FEM software (ANSYS) and manufactured by attaching straingages on the sensing element, finally, the characteristic test of the sensor was carried out. As a result, it is confirmed that interference error is less than 3%. And, it is thought that the sensor can be used to measure the forces and the moments for humanoid robot's head.

The primary objective of this study is to develop a prototype of all-in-one attachment-based PHC pile head cutting robot that improves the conventional work in safety, productivity, and quality. For this, the following research works are conducted sequentially; 1)literature review, 2)development of an all-in-one attachment-based PHC pile head cutting robot prototype, 3)performance evaluation of each device, 4)economic analysis of an automated method. As a result, PHC pile cutting level sensing device, PHC pile cutting device, PHC pile handling device are developed. Futhermore, working process of an automated method is developed based on result of performance evaluation. According to the economic analysis result, the cost of the automated method was 21.37% less than that of the conventional method, and the economic efficiency was also superior(ROR 215.44%, Break-even Point 5.52month). It is expected that conclusions for future improvements are used in the development of the all-in-one attachment-based PHC pile head cutting robot to practical use.
The control rod drive mechanisms in a reactor head are arranged too narrow for a human worker to approach. Moreover, the working environment is in high radiation area. In order to inspect defections in the surfaces of the reactor head and welding parts, a visual inspection device that can approach such a narrow and high radiation area is required. This paper introduces a tele-operated mobile robot for visual inspection of a reactor head, which has pan/tilt camera, fixed rear camera, ultrasonic collision detection system, and so on. Moreover, the host controller and digital video logging system are developed and integrated control software is also developed. The robot is operated by a wireless control, which gives flexibility for the inspection.
Since a snake achieves various movements just by a slender body, the mechanism of it is very amazing Many researches have been focusing on a snake like robot and have done for it on the ground. However the meander motion of the snake not only can be done by ground creatures, but also can be done by a water creature such as a sea snake or an eel. Therefore, the purpose of our research is to develop an autonomous underwater robot like the sea snake. As an approach to this goal, we develop an experimental sea snake-like-robot for examining basic characteristics, including propulsion, a turning and other performance. Our developed robot is composed of the head and 4 bodies. Each body equips one servomotor, which is operated with pulse signal. In the head unit, 1- chip-microcomputer, which generates the servomotor control signal for realizing a snake motion and the battery, is equipped. Our robot is covered with a rubber film for the waterproof. Using our developed robot, characteristics of the snake-like-robot moved in water are examined.

In this paper a cervical rehabilitation robot for Mckenzie exercises to be effective to neck pain relief is proposed. The robot has two degrees of freedom (DOF) for Lateral flexion and extension, Dorsal and Vental flexion which enable user to perform cervical stretching and isometric exercises for neck muscles. The mechanical parts of the cervical rehabilitation robot can be mounted on a back- or head-rest of chair, and user can perform the Mckenzie exercise with seated. In experiments we measured the range of motion of cervical part, EMG signals from neck muscles and the contact forces of a head bracket fixing the head part of user, and then evaluated their performances. From the experimental results, we showed a feasibility of the cervical rehabilitation robot proposed in this study.

Polishing a die that has free-form surfaces is a time-consuming and tedious job, and requires a considerable amount of high-precision skill. In order to reduce the polishing time and cope with the shortage of skilled workers, an automatic polishing robot system was developed. The polishing robot system is composed of two subsystems, a three-axis machining center and a two-axis polishing head. The machining center is controlled by a FANUC controller, and the polishing head by DSP controller. The system has five degrees of freedom and is able to keep the polishing tool normal to the die surface during operation. To easily operate the developed polishing robot system, this study developed an integrated operating program in the Windows environment. The program consists of five modules: a polishing data generation module, a code separation module, a polishing module, a graphic simulator module, and a teaching module. And, the automatic teaching system was developed to easily obtain teaching data and it consists of a three dimensional joystick and a proximity sensor. Also, to evaluate the performance of the integrated operating program and the polishing robot system, polishing experiments of a die of shadow mask were carried out.
