  • Microcontamination caused by particle deposition on the head disk interface threatens the reliability of hard disk drive. Design of slider rail to control contamination becomes an important issue in magnetic recording. In this paper, how particles adhere to the slider and the disk is examined. To investigate accumulation mechanism of the particles, trajectory of the particles in a slider/disk interface is simulated with considering various forces including drag force, gravitational force, Saffman lift force, and electrostatic force. It is found that the charged particles can easily adhere to the slider or disk surface, if an electric field exists between the slider and the disk. It is supposed that the vertical motion of the particles should be related with not only Saffman force but also electrostatic force.

  • Head Disk Interface (HDI) in a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) has decreased to achieve high areal density. Thus, the contact between a slider and a disk becomes more important. The contact between the slider and the disk can cause severe wear and damage of both the slider and the disk. Especially, Touch Down (TD) that the contact occurs continuously and repeatedly is extremely dangerous. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the unstable bouncing vibration of the slider in head-disk interface. In this paper, we investigate the characteristic and causes of the Touch Down.

  • As the flying height decreased, it is essential that hard disk drives perform reliable under various environmental conditions. In this paper the tribological characteristics of a head/disk interface are investigated under various temperature, relative humidity, altitude and outgas conditions. Specially, Contact-Start-Stop(CSS) tests were performed to assess the stiction, acoustic emission, slider take-off behavior, and track average amplitude(TAA). It is shown that the surface damage and head failure are accelerated by high temperature and humidity as well as low ambient pressure.

  • In order to analysis contact mechanism of head/ disk interface on hard disk drive, many techniques of analysis have been developed. Acoustic Emission sensor can be used for detect elastic energy of contact at head/disk interface. This work presents a good understanding of slider characteristics in frequency domain. The results show that torsional and bending mode of slider are dominant in head/disk contact.

  • The effect of particulate contamination on friction and wear between a negative-pressure picoslider / tri-pad nanoslider and laser-textured disk was studied. Particles of different concentration were injected at the head-disk interface consisting of disks with various textures and slider types at different speed. Durability increased and coefficient of friction decreased as the disk speed increased in a contaminated environment. Frictional characteristics and durability in the data zone were better for those of the laser-textured zone. It was also found that durability of head-disk interface (HDI)decreased as the particle concentration increased. The interface durability with a picoslider was better than that with a nanoslider at any condition in a contaminated environment. Based on the test results, mechanisms were proposed to explain the reasons why durability with a picoslider was superior to that with a nanoslider.

  • Reliability of a hard disk drive depends on the head disk interface (HDI) characteristics. Particularly, the disk media and the head can be damaged due to contact between the two components during operation. The contact may occur due to particles being introduced into the disk/slider interface or due to direct contact between the slider and the disk. Such contacts may be induced by external vibration or abnormal operation of the HDI. In this work the characteristics of scratches generated on the disk surface were investigated. The scratches were generated by impacting the hard disk. The type of scratches was analyzed with respect to their shape and dimensions.

  • Acoustic emission(AE) signal has been widely utilized to monitor the interaction at the head/disk interface. In this work the relationship between the AE signal and the state of contact between the slider and the disk is presented. Results of the FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) analyses of the AE signal could be used to better understand the interfacial interaction. Also, it was found that wear particles affect the AE signal. Therefore, the signal can be used to monitor the wear particle presence at the interface.

  • In order to measure the real contact force between head and disk on hard disk drive quantitatively, many technique of measurement have been developed. Acoustic Emission Sensor can be used for detect elastic energy of head/disk contact as arms value. In this study using pencil breaking test is proposed for finding contact force using transfer function between calibrated force and real contact force. And real AE data of subambient and tripad slider shows bending and torsional mode and their energy are dominant in hard disk and head contact.

  • This paper presents the modeling, theoretical formulation, and stability analysis for a combined system of a spinning disk and a head that contacts the disk. In the analytical model, head interface is considered by a rotating mass-spring-damper system together with a frictional follower force on the damped annular disks. The method of multiple scales is utilized to perform the stability analysis that shows the existence of instability associated with parametric resonances. This instability can be effectively stabilized by increasing the damping ratio of a disk.
