  • The performance of a cryptographic module is the most important thing to achieve a high performance VPN system which realizes information security by encrypting and decrypting all the communicating data packets. However the cryptographic operations require much computation power and software cryptographic systems reveal bad performance. Thus, it is strongly recommended to develop a VPN system employing hardware component. This paper introduces a case study of developing a PCI add-on card which supports several block cipher algorithms such as DES, 3DES, AES, and SEED. The performance of them was measured by embedding the card in a commercial VPN system.

  • This paper presents hardware implementations of the two representative cryptographic algorithms, Advanced Encryption Standard (Rijndael), and the present American federal standard (Triple DES) using a PCI- based FPGA board named "EBSW-1" This board bases on a FPGA chip (Xilinx Virtex300 XCV300PQ240-4). The implementation results of these two algorithms were tested successfully. AES circuit could proceed an encryption as well as a decryption two times faster than the Triple-DES circuit, while the former circuit used higher rates of CLBs. Besides, if these architectures use pipeline-registers, the processing speed will be increased about 1.5 times than the presented circuits.

  • In this paper, we implement a new hardware for finding the significant coefficients of a digital hologram and ciphering them using discrete wavelet packet transform (DWPT). Discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and packetization of subbands is used, and the adopted ciphering technique can encrypt the subbands with various robustness based on the level of the wavelet transform and the threshold of subband energy. The hologram encryption consists of two parts; the first is to process DWPT, and the second is to encrypt the coefficients. We propose a lifting based hardware architecture for fast DWPT and block ciphering system with multi-mode for the various types of encryption. The unit cell which calculates the repeated arithmetic with the same structure is proposed and then it is expanded to the lifting kernel hardware. The block ciphering system is configured with three block cipher, AES, SEED and 3DES and encrypt and decrypt data with minimal latency time(minimum 128 clocks, maximum 256 clock) in real time. The information of a digital hologram can be hided by encrypting 0.032% data of all. The implemented hardware used about 200K gates in $0.25{\mu}m$ CMOS library and was stably operated with 165MHz clock frequency in timing simulation.

  • This paper describes a design of cryptographic processor that implements the AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) block cipher algorithm“Rijndael”. To achieve high throughput rate, a sub-pipeline stage is inserted into the round transformation block, resulting that the second half of current round function and the first half of next round function are being simultaneously operated. For area-efficient and low-power implementation the round transformation block is designed to share the hardware resources in encryption and decryption. An efficient scheme for on-the-fly key scheduling, which supports the three master-key lengths of 128-b/192-b/256-b, is devised to generate round keys in the first sub-pipeline stage of each round processing. The cryptoprocessor designed in Verilog-HDL was verified using Xilinx FPGA board and test system. The core synthesized using 0.35-${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ CMOS cell library consists of about 25,000 gates. Simulation results show that it has a throughput of about 520-Mbits/sec with 220-MHz clock frequency at 2.5-V supply.

  • In this paper, we proposed an architecture of a cryptosystem with various operating modes for the network security and implemented in hardware using the ASIC library. For configuring a cryptosystem, the standard block ciphers such as AES, SEED and 3DES were included. And the implemented cryptosystem can encrypt and decrypt the data in real time through the wired/wireless network with the minimum latency time (minimum 64 clocks, maximum 256 clocks). It can support CTR mode which is widely used recently as well as the conventional block cipher modes such as ECB, CBC and OFB, and operates in the multi-bit mode (64, 128, 192, and 256 bits). The implemented hardware has the expansion possibility for the other algorithms according to the network security protocol such as IPsec and the included ciphering blocks can be operated simultaneously. The self-ciphering mode and various ciphering mode can be supported by the hardware sharing and the programmable data-path. The global operation is programmed by the serial communication port and the operation is decided by the control signals decoded from the instruction by the host. The designed hardware using VHDL was synthesized with Hynix 0.25$\mu\textrm{m}$ CMOS technology and it used the about 100,000 gates. Also we could assure the stable operation in the timing simulation over 100㎒ using NC-verilog.

  • This thesis proposed an effective encryption method for the DCT-based image/video contents and made it possible to operate in a high speed by implementing it as an optimized hardware. By considering the increase in the amount of the calculation in the image/video compression, reconstruction and encryption, an partial encryption was performed, in which only the important information (DC and DPCM coefficients) were selected as the data to be encrypted. As the result, the encryption cost decreased when all the original image was encrypted. As the encryption algorithm one of the multi-mode AES, DES, or SEED can be used. The proposed encryption method was implemented in software to be experimented with TM-5 for about 1,000 test images. From the result, it was verified that to induce the original image from the encrypted one is not possible. At that situation, the decrease in compression ratio was only $1.6\%$. The hardware encryption system implemented in Verilog-HDL was synthesized to find the gate-level circuit in the SynopsysTM design compiler with the Hynix $0.25{\mu}m$ CMOS Phantom-cell library. Timing simulation was performed by Verilog-XL from CadenceTM, which resulted in the stable operation in the frequency above 100MHz. Accordingly, the proposed encryption method and the implemented hardware are expected to be effectively used as a good solution for the end-to-end security which is considered as one of the important problems.

  • In this paper, we propose a differential fault analysis on symmetric SPN block cipher with bitslice involution S-box in 2011. The target block cipher was designed using AES block cipher and has advantage about restricted hardware and software environment using the same structure in encryption and decryption. Therefore, the target block cipher must be secure for the side-channel attacks. However, to recover the 128-bit secret key of the targer block cipher, this attack requires only one random byte fault and an exhausted search of $2^8$. This is the first known cryptanalytic result on the target block cipher.

  • With the growing trend of pervasive computing, (the idea that technology is moving beyond personal computers to everyday devices) there is a growing demand for lightweight ciphers to safeguard data in a network that is always available. For all block cipher applications, the AES is the preferred choice. However, devices used in pervasive computing have extremely constraint environment and as such the AES will not be suitable. In this paper we design and implement a new lightweight compact block cipher that takes advantage of both S-P network and the Feistel structure. The cipher uses the S-box of PRESENT algorithm and a key dependent one stage omega permutation network is used as the cipher's P-box. The cipher is implemented on iNEXT-V6 board equipped with virtex-6 FPGA. The design synthesized to 196 slices at 337 MHz maximum clock frequency.

  • Recently, several cache side channel attacks have been proposed to extract secret information by exploiting design flaws of the microarchitecture. The Flush+Reload attack, one of the cache side channel attack, can be applied to malicious application attacks due to its properties of high resolution and low noise. In this paper, we proposed a detection system, which detects the cache-based attacks using the PCM(Performance Counter Monitor) for monitoring CPU cache activity. Especially, we observed the variation of each counter value of PCM in case of two kinds of attacks, Spectre attack and secret recovering attack during AES encryption. As a result, we found that four hardware counters were sensitive to cache side channel attacks. Our detector based on machine learning including SVM(Support Vector Machine), RF(Random Forest) and MLP(Multi Level Perceptron) can detect the cache side channel attacks with high detection accuracy.
