To investigate the effect of ultrasonic nano-crystalline surface modification (UNSM) treatment on rolling contact fatigue and residual stress properties of bearing steels, this paper carried out a rolling contact fatigue test, measured residual stress and retained austenite, performed a wear test, observed microstructure, measured micro hardness, and analyzed surface topology. After the UNSM treatment, it was found that the surface became minute by over $100{\mu}m$. The micro surface hardness was changed from Hv730~740 of base material to Hv850~880 with about 20% improvement, and hardening depth was about 1.3 mm. The compressive residual stress was measured as high as -700~-900 MPa, and the quantity of retained austenite was reduced to 27% from 34%. The polymet RCF-6 ball type rolling contact fatigue test showed over 4 times longer fatigue lifetime after the UNSM treatment under 551 kgf load and 8,000 rpm. In addition, this paper observed the samples, which went through the rolling contact fatigue test, with OM and SEM, and it was found that the samples had a spalling phenomenon (the race way is decentralized) after the UNSM treatment. However, before the treatment, the samples had excessive spalling and complete exploration. Comparison of the test samples before and after the UNSM treatment showed a big difference in the fatigue lifetime, which seems to result from the complicated effects of micro particles, compressive residual stress, retained austenite, and surface topology.

In this paper, we propose a method to evaluate the material properties of high-yield strength materials exceeding 10GPa from spherical indentation. Using a regression equation considering four indentation variables, we map the load displacement relation into a stress-strain relation. To calculate the properties of high-strength materials, we then write a program that produces material properties using the loading / unloading data from the indentation test. The errors in material properties computed by the program are within 0.3, 0.8, and 6.4 for the elastic modulus, yield strength, and hardening coefficient, respectively.

In this study, we suggest a method for material property evaluation by dual-triangular pyramidal indenters using the reverse analysis. First, we demonstrated that load-displacement curves of conical and triangular pyramidal indenters are different for the same material. For this reason, an independent research on the triangular pyramidal indenter is needed. From FE indentation analyses on various materials, we then investigated the relationships among material properties, indentation parameters and load-displacement curves. From this, we established property evaluation formula using dual-triangular pyramidal indenters having two different half-included-angles. The approach provides the values of elastic modulus, yield strength and strain-hardening exponent within an average error of 3% for various materials.

Nitriding layers developed during gaseous nitriding of AISI4115 steels for the application of steel bushing part were investigated. The compound layer thickness of about 10㎛, 0.3mm of case depth under the same conditions, and conventional nitriding, nitrocarburizing, and controlled nitriding were performed in three methods. In the controlled nitriding, KN was controlled by measuring the hydrogen partial pressure. The nitrided samples were analyzed by micro Vickers hardness test, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The phases of compound layer were identified by X-ray diffraction and electron backscatter diffraction. The controlled nitriding specimen indicated the highest surface hardness of about 860 HV0.1. The compound layer of the conventional nitriding and nitrocarburizing specimen was formed with about 46% porous layer and 𝜺 + 𝜸' phase, and about 13% porous layer and about 80% 𝜸' phase were formed on the controlled nitriding specimen. As a result of the Ball-on-disk wear test, the worn mass loss of ball performed on the surface of the controlled nitriding specimen was the largest. The controlled nitriding specimen had the highest surface hardness due to the lowest porous percentage of compound layer, which improved the wear resistance.

In installation of groundwater wells, grouting materials are injected between the groundwater borehole and the inner casing in order to prevent infiltration of contaminated groundwater from the top soil layers into wells. The injection device of grouting materials is commonly composed of an inlet head device with an expansion packer, a cylinder capable of storing the grouting materials, and an air cylinder. In this work, two types of common grouting materials, silicon and cement materials, were tested for their performances as grouting media. For silicon. silicon was mixed with clay or calcite, and tested for their tensile strength and underwater reactivity. Both silicon-clay and silicon-calcite mixtures had adequate flow and adhesiveness. For cement material, general cement, ultra-rapid harding cement, and natural cement were respectively mixed with three different soil types including coarse-grained granite, fine-grained granite, and gneiss, and direct shearing tests were conducted after hardening. Under grouting depth condition of 30 m, the minimum adhesive strength was greater for weathered gneiss than non-weathered gneiss with its maximum values obtained from the mixtures of ultra rapid-harding cement.
In wind-resistant designs, wind velocity is assumed to be a Gaussian process; however, local complex topography may result in strong non-Gaussian wind features. This study investigates the non-Gaussian wind features over complex terrain under atmospheric turbulent boundary layers by the large eddy simulation (LES) model, and the turbulent inlet of LES is generated by the consistent discretizing random flow generation (CDRFG) method. The performance of LES is validated by two different complex terrains in Changsha and Mianyang, China, and the results are compared with wind tunnel tests and onsite measurements, respectively. Furthermore, the non-Gaussian parameters, such as skewness, kurtosis, probability curves, and gust factors, are analyzed in-depth. The results show that the LES method is in good agreement with both mean and turbulent wind fields from wind tunnel tests and onsite measurements. Wind fields in complex terrain mostly exhibit a left-skewed Gaussian process, and it changes from a softening Gaussian process to a hardening Gaussian process as the height increases. A reduction in the gust factors of about 2.0%-15.0% can be found by taking into account the non-Gaussian features, except for a 4.4% increase near the ground in steep terrain. This study can provide a reference for the assessment of extreme wind loads on structures in complex terrain.

This study presents a 3D non-linear finite element (FE) assessment of dynamic soil-structure interaction (SSI). The numerical investigation has been performed on the time domain through a Finite Element (FE) system, while considering the nonlinear behavior of soil and the multi-directional nature of genuine seismic events. Later, the FE outcomes are analyzed to the recorded in-situ free-field and structural movements, emphasizing the numerical model's great result in duplicating the observed response. In this work, the soil response is simulated using an isotropic hardening elastic-plastic hysteretic model utilizing HSsmall. It is feasible to define the non-linear cycle response from small to large strain amplitudes through this model as well as for the shift in beginning stiffness with depth that happens during cyclic loading. One of the most difficult and unexpected tasks in resolving soil-structure interaction concerns is picking an appropriate ground motion predicted across an earthquake or assessing the geometrical abnormalities in the soil waves. Furthermore, an artificial neural network (ANN) has been utilized to properly forecast the non-linear behavior of soil and its multi-directional character, which demonstrated the accuracy of the ANN based on the RMSE and R2 values. The total result of this research demonstrates that complicated dynamic soil-structure interaction processes may be addressed directly by passing the significant simplifications of well-established substructure techniques.

The effects of carburizing pressure and gas ratio on vacuum carburizing properties (uniformity and surface characteristics) have been studied through the analyses of carbon concentration, hardness, surface color, surface roughness and type of carbon bonding. AISI 4115 steel specimens were carburized with various pressures (1, 5, and 10 Torr) at different locations (P1, P2, P3, P4, P5, and P6) inside a furnace held at 950 ℃. Since the carburizing pressure represents the density of the carburizing gas, it plays an important role in improving the carburizing uniformity according to locations in the furnace. As the carburizing pressure increased, the carburizing uniformity according to the sample location was improved, but the surface of the carburized specimen was discolored due to the residual acetylene gas, which does not contribute to the carburizing reaction. Therefore, the carburizing uniformity and surface discoloration have been improved by injecting acetylene gas (carburizing gas) and nitrogen gas (non-reactive gas) in a specific ratio.
In this study, a series of three-dimensional numerical parametric study was conducted to investigate deformation mechanisms of an existing box culvert due to an adjacent multi-propped basement excavation in clays. Field measurements from an excavation case history are first used to calibrate a baseline Hardening Soil Small Strain (HS-small) model, which is subsequently adopted for parametric study. Results indicate that the basement-box culvert interaction along the basement centerline can be considered as a plane strain condition when the length of excavation (L) reaches 14 He (i.e., final excavation depth). If a plane strain condition (i.e., L/He=12.0) is assumed for analyzing the basement-box culvert interaction of a short excavation (i.e., L/He=2.0), the maximum settlement and horizontal movement of the box culvert are overestimated significantly by up to 15.7 and 5.1 times, respectively. It is also found that the deformation of box culvert can be greatly affected by the basement excavation if the distance between the box culvert and retaining wall is less than 1.5 He. The induced deformation in the box culvert can be dramatically reduced by improving the ground inside the excavation or implementing other precautionary measures. For example, by adding jet grouting columns within the basement and installing an isolation wall behind the retaining structures, the maximum settlements of box culvert are shown to reduce by 37.2% and 13.4%, respectively.
This study investigated the effects of KN and process time on the formation of a compound layer at a nitriding temperature of 540℃ for SCR420H material. As a result of controlled nitriding from 3 h to 20 h at KN 1.2 atm-1/2, compound layers were formed up to about 10 ㎛, and an effective hardening depth of about 460 ㎛ was obtained. Initially, an ε+γ' complex phase was formed, and the phase fraction changed over time, and finally, the fraction of ε phase decreased to less than 1%. With higher KN, the compound thickness increased, a pore layer was formed on the surface, and the surface hardness decreased. By applying the controlled nitriding process, it was possible to produce annulus gears with a compound thickness of 12.8 ㎛ and an ε phase of 5% or less. The annulus gears made through controlled nitriding were mounted on a 6-speed transmission and tested for durability. As a result, the durability test of 250,000 km was satisfied, and the transmission efficiency was also confirmed to be expected.
