Sleep quality and happiness among young adults: The role of positive memory bias (청년기의 수면과 행복: 기억의 긍정성 편향을 중심으로)

  • Despite the benefits of social activity on happiness, humans still spend over one third of their time by themselves-sleeping. The effect of sleep quality on happiness as well as its underlying mechanism are examined in this study. Based on previous findings on the role of sleep in consolidation of memories, it was hypothesized that a good sleep would promote happiness by increasing the likelihood of recalling everyday episodes in a positively biased manner. In Study 1, regardless of one's demographic variables, social variables, and economic status, sleep quality was positively related to life satisfaction. To examine the causal direction of this effect, participants were asked to complete a survey twice with different time intervals. Controlling for baseline variables, sleep quality during previous two weeks (Study 2) or previous day (Study 3) significantly predicted the participants' life satisfaction. Moreover, this relationship was partially mediated by a positive memory bias (Study 3). This study opens interesting questions on a relatively unexamined nonsocial predictor of happiness, sleep quality.

Effects of Leadership, Critical Thinking Disposition, Professional Self-conception of Nurse on Happiness in Nursing Students (간호대학생의 리더십, 비판적 사고성향, 간호전문직 자아개념이 행복감에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of leadership, critical thinking disposition, and professional self-conception of nurse on happiness in nursing students. Methods: Data ware collected from 160 nursing students from March to May 2015, using self reported questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis and multiple regression were used to analyze the collected data. Results: Happiness in nursing students was correlated with leadership (r=.68, p<.001), critical thinking disposition (r=.36, p<.001) and professional self-conception of nurse (r=.57, p<.001). Factors significantly influencing happiness in nursing students were leadership (${\beta}=.48$, p<.001), professional self-conception of nurse (${\beta}=.17$, p=.032) and life satisfaction (${\beta}=.18$, p=.003), with a total explanatory power of 53.0%. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that leadership, critical thinking disposition, and professional self-conception of nurse should be promoted to increase happiness of nursing students.

Does SNS as an Information Channel Improve SNS Users' Happiness?

  • Purpose - This research aims to examine the influence of social capital formed on SNS on SNS users' life satisfaction. This research divides social capital into bridging and bonding social capital based on Social Capital Theory and suggests that each type of social capital will have a positive impact on SNS users' life satisfaction. In addition, this research suggests the self-construal of SNS users as a moderating variable based on Self-Construal Theory. Research design, data, and methodology - To test the hypotheses presented, an online survey was conducted with adult participants. An online research company was hired to conduct an online survey; survey participants were volunteer adult participants residing in Korea. And data was analyzed using SPSS. Results - Analysis results showed that the impact of bonding social capital on life satisfaction was not statistically different between SNS users of differing self-construals(independent vs. interdependent self-construal). However, this study also determined that the impact of bridging social capital on life satisfaction was greater for SNS users with an interdependent self-construal as opposed to those with an independent self-construal. Conclusions - The results of this study expand the scope of available research on social capital formed on SNS and provide practical implications for SNS providers.

Converged Factors Influencing Depression of Community Dwelling Elderly (지역사회 거주 노인의 우울에 미치는 융합적 영향요인)

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze the depression, happiness on aging, self-esteem, life satisfaction and disability of daily living activity level of the elderly people, and to analyze the variables to impact on their depression. The study data were analyzed descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's Correlation Coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. The most influential variables on the elderly depression were self-esteem with 27.9% of explanatory power (${\beta}=-.318$, p<.001), followed by life satisfaction with 5.5%(${\beta}=-.248$, p<.001), happiness on aging 4.1%((${\beta}=-.200$, p<.001), disability of daily living activity 1.6%(${\beta}=.128$, p=.026), and 4 variables explaining 39.1% of the elderly depression. Therefore it is necessary to develop specific education programs to reduce depression and to improve self-esteem and happiness on aging of the elderly.

Influencing Variables on Life Satisfaction of Korean Elders in Institutions

  • Purpose. The number of elders in institutions has increased as family supporting systems have changed in Korea. The purpose of this study were to understand the life satisfaction among elders in institutions and to identify the factors influencing on life satisfaction. Methods. The instruments used were Yun(1982)'s scale modified Memorial University of Newfoundland Scale for Happiness(MUNSH) in life satisfaction, ADL and IADL in activity level, Self-rating Depression Scale(SDS) in depression and Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire(NSSQ) scale in social support. Also, Perceived health status was measured by Visual Graphic Rating Scale. The subject of this study is 107 cognitively intact and ambulatory elders in 7 institutions in Daegu city and Kyungpook province. The data have been collected from May 1 to June 30, 2001. For the analysis of collected data, frequency analysis, mean, standard deviation, Pearson's correlation and stepwise multiple regression analysis were used for statistical analysis by SPSS win(version 9.0) program. Results. Life satisfaction for the elders in institutions showed negative correlation with SDS, and positive correlation with activity level. The regression form of the stepwise multiple regression analysis to investigate the influencing factors of life satisfaction for the elders in institutions was expressed by y =90.988-0. 733x1-0.188x2-0.069x3-0.565x4 (xl: SDS x2: Social support x3: Activity level x4: Monthly pocket Money) and 57.9% of varience in life satisfaction was explained by the model. Conclusion. The factors influencing on life satisfaction among the elders in institutions were SDS, social support, activity level and monthly pocket money. According to the results of this study, depression, social support and activity level are considered the prime causal factors for life satisfaction.

A Study of College Life Stress, Self-Leadership, and Sociality of College Students Majoring in Nursing Science (간호대학생의 대학생 생활 스트레스, 셀프리더십, 사회성에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose : This descriptive study examined the correlation between college life stress, self-leadership, sociality, and the three variables of nursing students. Methods : This study surveyed 225 college students majoring in nursing at City B from May to June 2021. The collected data were analyzed for frequency, percentage ratio, mean, and standard deviation using SPSS/WIN 22.0. For the analysis, t-test, analysis of variance, Scheffé's test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient were used. Results : The college life stress of nursing students was 2.12±0.67, self-leadership was 3.41±0.59, and sociality was 3.19±0.42. College life stress as measured by grade (F=3.49, p=.016), major satisfaction(F=3.83, p=.005), happiness index(F=6.38, p=.000), and health status(F=4.61, p<.001) showed significant differences. Self-leadership showed a significant difference in satisfaction with college majors(F=7.02, p=.000). Sociality showed significant differences in college satisfaction(F=3.88, p=.005), happiness index(F=2.72, p=.031), and health status (F=2.92, p=.022). Self-leadership and sociality were positively correlated(r=.147, p=.028). Conclusion : Based on the results of this study, repeated research on college life stress, self-leadership, and sociality of nursing students is required, and attention and effort are needed to develop programs that can reduce college life stress and foster self-direction.

Double Mediating Effect of Subjective Well-being and Gratitude Disposition on Relationship between Stress and Feeling of Happiness among High School Students (고등학생의 스트레스와 행복감 간의 관계에서 주관적 웰빙과 감사성향의 이중 매개효과)

  • This study aims to identify the relationship between stress and feeling of happiness among high school students, and to examine the double mediating model of subjective well-being and gratitude disposition on that relationship. Participants of this study were 245 male and female high school students. Perceived Stress Scale, Satisfaction with Life Scale, Emotion Frequency Test, Gratitude Questionnaire-6, and Subjective Happiness Scale were used for this study. To analyse a sequential double mediating effect, PROCESS Macro 3.5 Model 6 was used. Results revealed that stress was negatively correlated with subjective well-being, gratitude disposition, and feeling of happiness among high school students. And, subjective well-being was positively correlated with gratitude disposition and feeling of happiness, while gratitude disposition was positively correlated with feeling of happiness. It was found that subjective well-being and gratitude disposition were sequentially mediating stress and feeling of happiness among high school students. Because these findings suggest that subjective well-being and gratitude disposition play important roles in adolescents' happiness, it is necessary to promote their subjective well-being and gratitude disposition.

The Moderate Effect of the Religious Fundamentalism on Religious Orientations and Subjective Well-being (종교지향과 주관적 웰빙의 관계에 대한 종교적 원리주의의 조절효과)

  • This study aims to investigate how religious orientation of college students and the religious fundamentalism are related to their subjective well-being, and the interaction of religious orientations and the religious fundamentalism on their well-being. The participants were 374 college students who studies at an university located in Seoul, whose average of age were 22.54 (SD=4.79). The psychological tests used in this research included the following: I/E-R, the Religious Fundamentalism Scale, the Spiritual Well-Being Scale, Emotion Frequency Test, Satisfaction with Life Scale, Subjective Happiness Scale, Life Satisfaction Motivation Scale, and Life Satisfaction Expectancy Scale. Although religious students experienced more religious well-being than non-religious students, their subjective well-being were not higher than those of non-religious students. Results reveal that religious orientations were positively related to subjective well-being such as life satisfaction, subjective happiness, and positive emotions, as well as spiritual well-being. However, those covariance was approximately 4~6% only. Religious fundamentalism was also positively related to spiritual well-being and life satisfaction, it was negatively related to the motivation to live though. On the other hand, moderate effects of the religious fundamentalism on the relations of religious orientations to most of subjective well-being variables. Results of simple main effect analyses indicated that the students who were strongly oriented toward religion with higher religious fundamentalism showed significantly higher existential well-being, positive emotions, life satisfaction, subjective happiness, and especially their motivation and expectation for future life, whereas there were no significant differences in subjective well-being of students with lower religious fundamentalism by religious orientation. This finding suggests that some religiosity variables could affect human well-being with interactions

Examination of the moderating effect of age on the relationship between regulatory focus and happiness (조절초점과 행복감 간의 관계에 대한 연령의 조절효과 분석)

  • People's interest in how to lead a happy life when they get older is increasing because of the extension of life span due to thedevelopment of medical technology. Factors that can affect happiness or the strength of the influence of those factors may vary according to age. Previous studies, have found that individuals with promotion focus are more likely to experience happiness than those with prevention focus. However, whether this effect of regulatory focus on happiness is consistent regardless of age has not been sufficiently investigated. Therefore, 1,250 Korean adults from each age group and residence were randomly selected as thesample, and the moderating effect of age on the relationship between regulatory focus and subjective well-being was examined. The results indicated that promotion focus and age have a significant interaction effect on subjective well-being, while the interaction effect of prevention focus and age was not significant. More concretely, the positive effects of promotion focus on life satisfaction and affective balance grew stronger with increasing age. This finding implies that it is especially important for old adults to use promotion focus by actively setting challenging goals and motivating themselves to gain a sense of accomplishment to experience subjective well-being. In addition, social support is proposed as being especially important to activate their promotion focus.

Application of Bibliotherapy to Enhance the Happiness of University Students (대학생 행복지수 제고를 위한 독서치료 적용에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of a new bibliotherapy program on the happiness index of University students. The results were as follows: Firstly, we can raise the happiness index through the new bibliotherapy program. More specifically, we can reduce negative emotions to a great extent, and raising the level of satisfaction with life is effective. But increasing positive emotions is not easy. Secondly, Effect of bibliotherapy program on the factors of Happiness is different by various situations. Thirdly, reaction of participants of bibliotherapy program to religeous and spiritual media is different.
