  • This study identifies the current status of hanok design process and required design information through individual survey and interview with hanok architects and builders to suggest a proposal. Current design system turns out to be a common design process not reflecting hanok's unique mechanism of production. The proposal consists of the alternative design process, 'Initial survey / Site and structural planning / Spatial layout and form / Openings, interior and exterior elements design / Detail design', containing the specialty of hanok's mechanism, and the lists of design information required in its each stage. The proposed design process also emphasizes the significance of consultation in a way of designing coordination, and classifies the specific contents for each consultation moments. The study is expected to contribute for architects including the group who are not specialized in hanok to improve the architectural quality by following the systematic design process. Also the design system provides a framework to organize the vast range of design information being recently developed in the technique-oriented area.

  • With the rising social interest in the sustainable life, demands are growing for Hanok, as a viable alternative to modernized architecture of Western origin. However, even Hanok is gaining popularity among the general public, its design and construction are still a minor practice. Aiming to build an information system of Hanok, this research proposes a new design process for traditional architecture, utilizing a parametric design methodology. This process, based on the understanding of tectonic joints and spatial composition of our traditional architecture, defines a parametric relationship among the structural elements that compose Hanok. The research uses Gehry Technologies' Digital Project and Autodesk Revit Architecture to apply a concurrent parametric design methodology, approaching the project in both bottom-up and top-down to present a new design process for Hanok elements.

  • Recently, the interest is increased rapidly about the New Hanok as contemporary house. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to recognize New Hanok as valuable things, which represents traditionality of urban, and to seek how it can be developed as contemporary house. This research analyze the characteristics of New Hanok is built since 2000. The result are as followings. First, many contemporary architects used only the roofing tiles and traditional Hanok elevation design as the design vocabulary of New Hanok. In future, the design vocabulary of New Hanok must be developed variously. Secondly, the construction of New Hanok is possible from the land of minimum $100m^2$ in a city can be found. Thirdly, as a result of having analyzed at the form and the spatial side, it has been analyzed that New Hanok can be divided into 3 types in the form side, which is 'the transfiguration of format', 'the motive borrowing of traditional elements', 'the vertical extension and reconstruction'. In the spatial side, it has been analyzed that New Hanok can be divided into 3 types, which is 'the center of Madang', 'the integration of circulation', 'the transfiguration of design principle'. Lastly, The contemporary architects were analyzed into having a thought that New Hanok must maintain an appearance of Hanok.

  • Hanok in Bukchon was originally planned for residential buildings, but recently, there have been needs and wants to renovate and modernize the houses into some other purposes. Many researches exist with regard to hanok in Bukchon; yet, most previous studies focus on the spatial changes caused by the renovation of hanok. Only few studies have dealt with some component issues such as window. Nevertheless, window of hanok is an important aesthetic and functional element that determines unique characteristics of hanok. In the process of recent modernization and functional changes of hanok, its traditional design is also changing. In fact, Bukchon has been rapidly evolving for tourist attractions so that banok has been renovated in various commercial as well as cultural purposes. Many of residential hanok have been converted into other purposes such as cultural, commercial or non-residential facilities so that the role of windows should be changed accordingly. Analyzing windows of the renovated hanok in Bukchon, this study identifies changes in its types in accordance with the repurposing. It deals with windows of the non-residential hanok only. A total of 456 Bukchon hanok are included in the Bukchon Historical and Cultural Center in the Hanok Register of the Hanok Registration System, which was enforced in 2001. Although 381 out of 456 hanok have been repaired since 2001, only 68 non-resident Bukchon hanok of the repaired ones are selected and surveyed in this study.

  • This study is meaningful in figuring out how much the Korean people's awareness of hanok has increased even though interest in hanok has also increased due to the Korean Wave craze. Therefore, with respect to the exterior of hanok, which is visually recognized first, the level of experts and ordinary people is grasped through a semantic discrimination scale, and the degree of visual recognition is to be investigated centering on the color image of hanok buildings. This is the process of thinking about how the Korean image should be reflected in the design, and we want to suggest the direction that modern hanok should go. The study compared and analyzed the difference in visual color based on the elevation of the hanok using a 7-point and 5-point scale method for the general public and experts, and utilized the IRI adjective vocabulary scale and the color matching image scale to construct new hanoks with insufficient differences in appearance and shape. It can be applied to design and image preservation and construction of existing hanok.

  • In this paper, we try to verify a normative module based house design procedure consisted of several sequential steps. The first step is to suggest formalization of designing so that we could clarify each phase and operation we are adopting in our design process. The second step is the clearing up the conceptual schema of traditional skills that we adopt and utilize from traditional Hanok framing techniques. The third step is to formulate adequate modular kits for the assembly of house design solutions for the schematic, conceptual and preliminary phases of designing. The fourth step is to implementing our ideas and methods to a proper computational platform such as Unity3D. The final step is to verify our symbolic descriptions of design formalization with the output of our experiments so that we have better understanding of design reasoning characteristics such as in house design.

  • Recently, the demand on the Hanok have been increased with social change. However, Hanok has a major problem of a rising costs caused by hand-made process. So, performance comparison between hand-made process and pre-cut process was conducted to modularize the joints in Hanok. Douglas-fir was used to manufacture the structural size dovetail joints by hand-made and pre-cut precess. The bending strengths on joints with two process were evaluated. The average ultimate load of pre-cut joints was 1.5 times higher than that of hand-made joints. F-test results in both process showed a great relationships between ultimate load and tenon's size variation. The length and thickness of tenon showed a proportional relationship with the ultimate load, but the tenon width showed inverse proportion with the ultimate load. This results may be used as basic data for the joint modularization of Hanok.
