A Simple Model for Dispersion in the Stable Boundary Layer

  • Handling the emergency problems such as Chemobyl accident require real time prediction of pollutants dispersion. One-point real time sounding at pollutant source and simple model including turbulent-radiation process are very important to predict dispersion at real time. The stability categories obtained by one-dimensional numerical model (including PBL dynamics and radiative process) are good agreement with observational data (Golder, 1972). Therefore, the meteorological parameters (thermal, moisture and momentum fluxes; sensible and latent heat; Monin-Obukhov length and bulk Richardson number; vertical diffusion coefficient and TKE; mixing height) calculated by this model will be useful to understand the structure of stable boundary layer and to handling the emergency problems such as dangerous gasses accident. Especially, this simple model has strong merit for practical dispersion models which require turbulence process but does not takes long time to real predictions. According to the results of this model, the urban area has stronger vertical dispersion and weaker horizontal dispersion than rural area during daytime in summer season. The maximum stability class of urban area and rural area are 'A' and 'B' at 14 LST, respectively. After 20 LST, both urban and rural area have weak vertical dispersion, but they have strong horizontal dispersion. Generally, the urban area have larger radius of horizontal dispersion than rural area. Considering the resolution and time consuming problems of three dimensional grid model, one-dimensional model with one-point real sounding have strong merit for practical dispersion model.

  • In 1969 this laboratory had prepared 131 mc. of radiopharmaceuticals in total (Hippuran and other four kinds) and distributed to the major medical establishments. The quality and stability of these products were reviewed by means of radio paper partition chromatography and thin layer chromatography and results were compared to those of foreign products. Generally, the quality and stability of the product of this laboratory were better than those of the foreign product, even though the properties of the radiopharmaceutical were varied by the procedure of the preparation adopted. Various precautions for handling radiopharmaceuticals for clinical use were also described with a view of quality control and stability test there of.

  • An intelligent grid computing architecture is proposed and developed for transient stability constrained total transfer capability evaluation of future smart grid. In the proposed intelligent grid computing architecture, a model of generalized compute nodes with 'able person should do more work' feature is presented and implemented to make full use of each node. A timeout handling strategy called conditional resource preemption is designed to improve the whole system computing performance further. The architecture can intelligently and effectively integrate heterogeneous distributed computing resources around Intranet/Internet and implement the dynamic load balancing. Furthermore, the robustness of the architecture is analyzed and developed as well. The case studies have been carried out on the IEEE New England 39-bus system and a real-sized Chinese power system, and results demonstrate the practicability and effectiveness of the intelligent grid computing architecture.

Soft computing-based slope stability assessment: A comparative study

  • Analysis of slope stability failures, as one of the complex natural hazards, is one of the important research issues in the field of civil engineering. Present paper adopts and investigates four soft computing-based techniques for this problem: Patient Rule-Induction Method (PRIM), M5' algorithm, Group Method of data Handling (GMDH) and Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS). A comprehensive database consisting of 168 case histories is used to calibrate and test the developed models. Six predictive variables including slope height, slope angle, bulk density, cohesion, angle of internal friction, and pore water pressure ratio were considered to generate new models. The results of test studies are used for feasibility, effectiveness and practicality comparison of techniques with each other, and with the other available well-known methods in the literature. Results show that all methods not only are feasible but also result in better performance than previously developed soft computing based predictive models and tools. It is shown that M5' and PRIM algorithms are the most effective and practical prediction models.

  • Recently, four-wheel steering systems have been developed and studied as one of the latest automotive technologies for improving the handling characteristics of a vehicle. In much of the proposed four-wheel steering systems, the side slip angle at the vehicle's center of gravity is maintained at zero. This approach allows the greater maneuverability at low speed by means of counter-phase rear steering and the improved stability at high speed through same-phase rear steering. In this paper, the effects of several four-wheel steering systems are studied and discussed on the responsiveness and stability of the vehicle by using the linear analysis. Especially, the effects of the cornering stiffnesses of both front and rear wheels are investigated on the yaw velocity gain and critical speed of the vehicle.

  • The stability analysis of rock slope can be predicted using a suitable field data but it cannot be predicted unless suitable field data was taken. In this study, artificial neural networks theory is applied to predict plane failure that has a few data. It is well known that human brain has the advantage of handling disperse and parallel distributed data efficiently. On the basis of this fact, artificial neural networks theory was developed and has been applied to various fields of science successfully In this study, error back-propagation algorithm that is one of the teaching techniques of artificial neural networks is applied to predict plane failure. In order to verify the applicability of this model, a total of 30 field data results are used. These data are used for training the artificial neural network model and compared between the predicted and the measured. The simulation results show the potentiality of utilizing the neural networks for effective safety factor prediction of plane failure. In conclusion, the well-trained artificial neural network model could be applied to predict the plane failure stability of rock slope.

  • In this paper, a new remote terminal unit(hereafter RTU) is proposed to manage a wide range of applications and a variety of sensors (eg, pressure, water quality, temperature and humidity sensors, the amount of pollutants, $CO_2$, etc.) to monitor and control the facility such as water treatment plant, intake and effluent pumping station, water tank and distribution network. Fault status of local sensor devices and network are alerted by using the embedded fault handling capabilities of the RTU in the system and also sent to the fault handling server, by which fault can be easily monitored to users. The developed system was applied to one of K-water branch offices in Geoje city and improved its reliability and stability for controlling and monitoring water facility.

  • Relaxed Static Stability(RSS) has been applied to improve flight performance of modern version supersonic jet fighters. Flight control systems are necessary to stabilize an unstable aircraft and to provide adequate handling qualities. Also, flight control systems of modern aircraft employ many safety measure to cope with emergency situations such as a pilot unknown attitude flight conditions of an aircraft in night flight-testing. This situation is dangerous because the aircraft can lose if the pilot not take recognizance of situation. The system called the "Pilot Activated Recovery System" or PARS, provided a pilot initiated automatic maneuver capable of an aircraft recoveries in situations of unusual attitudes, speed and altitude. This paper addresses the concept of PARS with AARS(Automatic Attitude Recovery System), ATCS(Automatic Thrust Control System) and MARES(Minimum Altitude Recovery Estimation System), and this control law is designed by nonlinear control law design process based on model of supersonic jet trainer. And, this control law is verified by real-time pilot evaluation using an HQS(Handling Quality Simulator). The result of evaluation reveals that the these systems support recovery of an aircraft unusual attitude and speed, and improve a safety of an aircraft.

  • The understeer characteristics of four wheel steering system(4WS system) in a high speed region have a negative effect upon the yaw velocity, leading to a decrease in the handling ability of vehicle. As a result, even if the side slip angle of vehicle can be kept up a minimum, a driver must compensate a decrease in yaw velocity by increasing the steering wheel angle in order to track the desired vehicle path. In this study, to keep the side slip angle of vehicle at zero and achieve a suitable yaw velocity in vehicle motion, a full active 4WS system(FA 4WS system) with actively steerable front and rear wheels is presented based on a nonlinear vehicle model and a model following control of yaw velocity. And the analysis results show the fat that, besides the excellent stability of vehicle, the FA 4WS system is able to realize better handling performance of vehicle than the previous 4WS systems in the high speed region.

  • A coal handling machine is a type of equipment used for loading coal, the main material in a steam power plant, along a conveyer belt from a ship, and is placed after the driving chain bucket. However, studies on the boom hoisting cylinder, which is a hydraulic system used to control the angle of the boom based on loading location, indicate that domestic models are insufficient, and are thereby often substituted with a foreign product. In this study, a technique for analyzing the contact pressure in a thick-walled cylinder was established by comparing the contact pressure, which is calculated theoretically based on the results obtained from FEM simulation, and by checking whether the working oil is leaking from the boom hoisting cylinder using a v-seal. In addition, the driving motion was simulated according to the strokes of the cylinder, and the structural stability was verified under the maximum output conditions.
