  • A new interleaved forward converter, adopting series-input parallel-output structure with a common transformer reset circuit, is proposed in this paper. Series-input structure distributes the voltage stress on switches, which makes it suitable for high input voltage application. Paralleling output stage with an interleaving technique enables the circuit handle large output current and reduces filter size. In addition, since two forward converters share one active-clamp circuit for the transformer reset, its primary structure is simplified. All these features make the proposed converter promising for high input voltage applications with high efficiency and simple structure.

  • In this paper, a small, lightweight smartphone-controlled riding robot is developed. Also, in this study, a smartphone with a jog shuttle mode for consideration of user convenience is proposed to make a small, lightweight riding robot. As well, a compass sensor is used to compensate for the mechanical characteristics of motors mounted on the riding robot. The riding robot is controlled by the interface of a drag-based jog shuttle in the smartphone, instead of a mechanical controller. For a personal riding robot, if the smartphone is used as a controller instead of a handle or a pole, it reduces its size, weight, and cost to a great extent. Thus, the riding robot can be used in indoor spaces such as offices for moving or a train or bus station and an airport for scouting, or hospital for disabilities. Experimental results show that the riding robot is easily and conveniently controlled by the proposed smartphone interface based on Android.

  • Efficient control of a marine engine requires an engine control unit (ECU) system that handles fast and precise signal processes for in-coming and out-going signals from fast running engines. In order to handle these roles, the sequential control has been adapted in the ECU system in small and medium size ship engines, which has caused high production cost and complexity of the system. Hence, this paper is focused on developing an distributed ECU system for high speed and high precision control of a marine engine by efficiently combining a CPLD chip and a microprocessor. By sharing load at the MCU with the designed CPLD chip, we could achieve in driving a marine engine with high speed and precise control so that the ECU board has been simplified and its production cost has been reduced.

  • To reduce the wasted power with using an OP-AMP, 3 circuit supplying the same amount of power to load through overall voltage range can able proposed. With this type of design, the power that induced to the devices in the circuit will be reduced, we can also develope a small size power supply with the OP-AMP developed using this design. If we need a OP-AMP needed to handle higher power than usual, another design technique can be proposed. With substituting one device with the devices connected in series, the power loaded to each devices in the series devices can be reduced. This thesis contents the design of an OP-AMP to use in high power fields with small thermal dissipation.

  • In this paper a new algorithm is introduced to enhance the fingerprint image effectively using fuzzy logic. Our approach is not constrained to a particular image size and scale. It rather handle different conditions of noise and image scale. Ridges are thinned while the image is enhanced along the same orientation as the ridges. The problem of false minutia can be also resolved.

  • A higher-order zig-zag theory is developed to refine the predictions of natural frequency and mode shape of laminated composite plates with multiple delaminations. By imposing top and bottom surface transverse shear stress-free and interface continuity conditions of transverse shear stresses including delaminated interfaces, the displacement field with minimal degree-of-freedoms are obtained. This displacement field can systematically handle the number, shape, size, and locations of delaminations. Through the dynamic version of variational approach, the dynamic equilibriums and variationally consistent boundary conditions are obtained. Through the numerical example of natural frequency analysis, the accuracy and efficiency of present theory are demonstrated. The present theory is suitable as an efficient tool to analyze the static and dynamic behavior of the composite plates with multiple delaminations.

  • In this work, a new penalty formulation is proposed for the analysis of Mindlin-Reissner plates by using the element-free Galerkin method. A penalized weak form for the Mindlin-Reissner Plates is constructed through the exterior penalty method to enforce the essential boundary conditions of rotations as well as transverse displacements. In the numerical examples, some typical problems of Mindlin-Reissner plates are analyzed, and parametric studies on the order of integration and the size of influence domain are also carried out. The effect of the types of background cells on the accuracy of numerical solutions is observed and a proper type of background cell for obtaining optimal accuracy is suggested. Further, optimal order of integration and basis order of Moving Least Squares approximation are suggested to efficiently handle the irregularly distributed nodes through the triangular type of background cells. From the numerical tests, it is identified that unlike the finite element method, the proposed element-free Galerkin method with penalty technique gives highly accurate solution without shear locking in dealing with Mindlin-Reissner plates.

  • The FPCs(Flexible Printed Circuit) are currently used in several electronic products like digital cameras, cellular phones because of flexible material characteristics. Because the FPC is usually small size and flexible, only one FPC should not enter chip mounting process, instead, several FPCs are placed on the large rigid pallette and enter into the chip mounting process. Currently the job of mounting FPC on the pallette is carried by totally manual way. Thus, the goals of the research is develop the automatic machine of FPC mounting on pallette using vision alignment. Instead of using two cameras or using moving one camera, the proposed vision system with only one fixed camera is adopted. Moreover, the two picker heads which can handle two FPCs simultaneously are used to make process time shortened. The procedure of operation is firstly to measure alignment error of FPC, correct alignment errors, and finally mount well-aligned FPC on the pallette. The vision technology is used to measure alignment error accurately, and precision motion control is used in correcting errors and mounting FPC.

  • Transient characteristics of a signal can be effectively exhibited in time-frequency domain. Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) is one of the time-frequency domain analysis methods. HHT is known for its several advantages over other signal analysis methods. The capability of analyzing non-stationary or nonlinear characteristics of a signal is the primary advantage of HHT. Moreover, it is known that HHT can provide fine resolution in high frequency region and handle large size data efficiently. In this study, the effectiveness of Hilbert-Huang transform is illustrated by employing structural systems undergoing impact. A simple discrete system and an axially oscillating cantilever beam undertaking periodic impulsive force are chosen to show the effectiveness of HHT.

  • Distributed coordination function(DCF) is the primary random access mechanism of IEEE 802.11, which is the basic protocol of wireless LAN based on the CSMA/CA protocol. It enables fast installation with minimal management and maintenance costs and is a very robust protocol for the best effort service in wireless medium. The current DCF, however, is known to be unsuitable for real-time applications such as voice message transmission. In this paper, we focus on the performance issues of IEEE 802.11 which accommodate the prioritized messages. Existing results use the initial window size and backoff window-increasing factor as tools to handle the priority of the messages. Instead, we introduce a novel scheme which chooses the backoff timer with arbitrary probabilities. By this, one can greatly reduce the backoff delay of the lower priority messages without degrading the performance of higher priority.
