  • This paper proposes a kinect-based human motion recognition model for the 3D contents control after tracking the human body gesture through the camera in the infrared kinect project. The proposed human motion model in this paper computes the distance variation of the body movement from shoulder to right and left hand, wrist, arm, and elbow. The human motion model is classified into the movement directions such as the left movement, right movement, up, down, enlargement, downsizing. and selection. The proposed kinect-based human motion recognition model is very natural and low cost compared to other contact type gesture recognition technologies and device based gesture technologies with the expensive hardware system.

  • A man model can be used as an effective tool to design ergonomically sound products and workplaces, and subsequently evaluate them properly. For a man model to be truly useful, it must be integrated with a posture prediction model which should be capable of representing the human arm reach posture in the context of equipments and workspaces. Since the human movement possesses redundant degrees of freedom, accurate representation or prediction of human movement was known to be a difficult problem. To solve this redundancy problem, a psychophysical cost function was suggested in this study which defines a cost value for each joint movement angle. The psychophysical cost function developed integrates the psychophysical discomfort of joints and the joint range availability concept which has been used for redundant arm manipulation in robotics to predict the arm reach posture. To properly predict an arm reach posture, an arm reach posture prediction model was then developed in which a posture configuration that provides the minimum total cost is chosen. The predictivity of the psychophysical cost function was compared with that of the biomechanical cost function which is based on the minimization of joint torque. Here, the human body is regarded as a two-dimensional multi-link system which consists of four links ; trunk, upper arm, lower arm and hand. Real reach postures were photographed from the subjects and were compared to the postures predicted by the model. Results showed that the postures predicted by the psychophysical cost function closely simulated human reach postures and the predictivity was more accurate than that by the biomechanical cost function.

  • In this paper, we present an image retrieval method for improving retrieval performance by fusion of probabilistic method and query point movement. In the proposed algorithm, the similarity for probabilistic method and the similarity for query point movement are fused in the computation of the similarity between a query image and database image. The probabilistic method used in this paper is suitable for handling negative examples. On the other hand, query point movement deals with the statistical property of positive examples. Combining these two methods, our goal is to overcome their shortcoming. Experimental results show that the proposed method yields better performances over the probabilistic method and query point movement, respectively.

  • The puropose of this study was to investigate the movement-fitness according to the surface changing of lower limb The experimental items were divided into the lower limb movements (5) and body-shapes (7). This study was done by the expansion and contraction rate consideration of length, girth Also, the lower half of body shape-change on the movements and body-shapes by flat shell was done simultaneously. The summarized findings resulted from experiments and investigation are suggested as follows; First, when commpared the expansion and contraction rate of the length and girth items, the expansion rate of the back crotch length (14~20%), hip girth (10~ 21%) and knee girth (6.2~18.5%) in rabbit leap movement was the most notable among all variables considered in this experimentation. On the others hand, the front croth length (-22~-52%) contracted remarkably. And big-thigh type was the most notable on the body-shape comparision. Second, in comparision of the expansion and contraction rate of the area on the blocks, the expansion of the hip (50~200%) and knee (51~74%) block was the most remarkable. Especially, in the sit on knees movement of the hip-down type expanded 209.4%. Third, in comparision of the lower half of body shape-change, on the movements and body- shapes by the flat shell, under the influence of knee-joint and hip-joint the shape-changs of the hip and knee block was the most notable. But the shape-change of the waist, abdomen, calf, and ankle was feeble.

  • Sign language has completely different meaning depending on the direction of the hand or the change of facial expression even with the same gesture. In this respect, it is crucial to capture the spatial-temporal structure information of each movement. However, sign language translation studies based on Sign2Gloss2Text only convey comprehensive spatial-temporal information about the entire sign language movement. Consequently, detailed information (facial expression, gestures, and etc.) of each movement that is important for sign language translation is not emphasized. Accordingly, in this paper, we propose Spatial-temporal Keypoints Centered Sign2Gloss2Text Translation, named STKC-Sign2 Gloss2Text, to supplement the sequential and semantic information of keypoints which are the core of recognizing and translating sign language. STKC-Sign2Gloss2Text consists of two steps, Spatial Keypoints Embedding, which extracts 121 major keypoints from each image, and Temporal Keypoints Embedding, which emphasizes sequential information using Bi-GRU for extracted keypoints of sign language. The proposed model outperformed all Bilingual Evaluation Understudy(BLEU) scores in Development(DEV) and Testing(TEST) than Sign2Gloss2Text as the baseline, and in particular, it proved the effectiveness of the proposed methodology by achieving 23.19, an improvement of 1.87 based on TEST BLEU-4.

  • This article defines the characteristics of Korean vegetarianism by tracing the changes in the core motives revealed in the historical development of the vegetarian movement that started in the West. We further explore and compare the limitations of the vegetarian movement conceived in the West with the essential values, 'How can Korean vegetarian culture gain the upper hand?'. Our results indicate that the sequential changes of the motives inherent to the flow of the modern vegetarian movement were <religious-philosophy>, <political-society>, and <healthy-nutrition>. This settled the transition from 'vegetarianism as an ideological form' to 'vegetarianism as a lifestyle', making it a more becoming way of life. However, along with the spread of 'vegetarian lifestyle as a form of life', commercial vegetarianism, which overshadows the essential value of vegetarianism, continued to flourish due to the modern capitalist industrial system. To curb commercialization, the necessity arose to establish a new vegetarian diet with a propensity towards an 'ecological-environmental point of view'. Thus, in order to establish the term and concept of a vegetarian diet for Korean vegetarian characteristics, we propose the formation of a vegetarian term and concept suitable for the Korean vegetarian culture.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to suggest new terminology for the ninety-five hand techniques based on the significance of their angular momentum, determined by analyzing each technique's influence or impact on the compartmentalized angular momentum of the trunk, upper arm, and forearm in the Taekwondo Poomsae. Method: An athlete who won the 2014 World Taekwondo Poomsae championship was selected and agreed to participate in the data collection phase of our investigation. The video data was collected using eight infrared cameras (Oqus 300, Qualysis, Sweden) and the Qualisys Track Manager software (Qualisys, Sweden). The angular momentum of each movement was then calculated using the Matlab R2009a software (The Mathworks, Inc., USA). Results: The classification of the ninety-five hand techniques in the Taekwondo Poomsae based on the significance of each segment's momentum is as follows. Makgi (blocking) is classified into fourteen categories, jireugi (punching) is classified into three categories, chigi (hitting) was classified into six categories, palgupchigi (elbow hitting) was classified into four categories, and jjireugi (thrusting) was classified two categories. Conclusion: This study offers a new approach, based on a biomechanical method, to the classification of the hand techniques that reflect kinesthetic motions in the Taekwondo Poomsae.

  • As virtual realty has become an issue of providing immersive services, in the area of virtual realty, it has been actively investigated to develop user interfaces for immersive interaction. In this paper, we propose a gesture recognition based immersive user interface by using an IR LED embedded helmet and data gloves in order to reflect the user's movements to the virtual reality environments effectively. The system recognizes the user's head movements by using the IR LED embedded helmet and IR signal transmitter, and the hand gestures with the data gathered from data gloves. In case of hand gestures recognition, it is difficult to recognize accurately with the general recognition model because there are various hand gestures since human hands consist of many articulations and users have different hand sizes and hand movements. In this paper, we applied the Mixture-of-Experts based gesture recognition for various hand gestures of multiple users accurately. The movement of the user's head is used to change the perspection in the virtual environment matching to the movement in the real world, and the gesture of the user's hand can be used as inputs in the virtual environment. A head mounted display (HMD) can be used with the proposed system to make the user absorbed in the virtual environment. In order to evaluate the usefulness of the proposed interface, we developed an interface for the virtual orchestra environment. The experiment verified that the user can use the system easily and intuituvely with being entertained.
