In order to provide fundamental information about the floristic composition of the area along with an assessment of the environmental impact, a floristic study of the vascular plants in the Tamjin River estuary in Gangjin-gun was conducted for a total of nine days, in the period from June 2014 to September 2014. We found that the vascular plants in this region comprised 424 taxa belong to 102 families, 281 genera, 390 species, 5 subspecies, 26 varieties, and 3 forma. Five taxa of Korean endemic plants including Weigela subsessilis (Nakai) L.H.Bailey, Lespedeza maximowiczii var. tricolor (Nakai) Nakai, and Clematis trichotoma Nakai were collected. Two least concern (LC) taxa of rare plants (as designated by the Korea Forest Service) were collected: Hydrocharis dubia (Blume) Backer and Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco. Ten the floristic regional indicator taxa from the third to the fifth grade were identified: two taxa belonged to grade IV, and eight taxa belonged to grade III. Twenty-four taxa of salt-tolerant plants, including Artemisia fukudo Makino, Carex rugulosa Kuk., and Suaeda glauca (Bunge) Bunge, as well as 44 taxa of aquatic plants, including Najas marina L., Nuphar oguraensis Miki, and Nymphoides indica (L.) Kuntze, were investigated in this region. Fifty-nine taxa of naturalized plants were recorded, among which the following six taxa were plants that caused ecosystem disturbance: Ambrosia artemisiifolia L., Humulus scandens (Lour.) Merr., Lactuca scariola L., Rumex acetosella L., Solidago altissima L., and Symphyotrichum pilosum (Willd.) G.L.Nesom.

We conducted a field survey of the generation and development of the delta area of the Nakdong River estuary, Korea. To examine deposition and erosion of the barrier islands, we observed the spatiotemporal variations of sediment transport and quantitatively estimated the settling velocity of coastal sediment. For the field survey, we established two survey sites off the coasts of Jinu Island and Doyodeung, which had shown rapid variations in deposition and erosion. At these sites, we measured the net surface elevation change of the bottom level at approximately 1-month intervals. Main findings were summarized as follows. (1) Calculated daily deposition and erosion velocity during the observation period ranged from -1.39 to 3.56cm/day at Jinu Island and from -4.0 to 3.07cm/day at Doyodeung, respectively. (2) Although two typhoons passed by the study area during the observation period, the maximum net surface elevation was larger in October than during the passage of those typhoons.
In this study, the methods of sedimentation reduction for the estuary barrage were analyzed using the CCHE2D bed change model. Especially, the effectiveness of sediment dredging currently applied in the field was evaluated quantitatively and also the channel contraction method which is a substitute method was analyzed for the Nakdong River Estuary Barrage (NREB). The numerical model was calibrated and validated for the sediment transport equations and transport modes. In the NREB case, the Ackers and White formula and bed load type was the most similar to the field condition. As a results of the dredging simulation, there was the sedimentation reduction effect of 0.2 m in the bed changes. Furthermore, the analysis result of the channel contraction method represented that the sedimentation reduction effects of the average 0.4 m and the maximum 2.0 m were produced.

A more complete two-dimensional vertical numerical model has been developed to describe the saltwater intrusion in an estuary. The model is based on the previous studies in order to obtain a better accuracy. The non-linear terms of the governing equations are analyzed and the $\sigma$-coordinate system is employed in the vertical direction with full transformation which is recently issued in several studies because numerical errors can be generated during the coordinate transformation of the diffusion term. The advection terms of the governing equations are discretized by an upwind scheme in second-order of accuracy. By employing an explicit scheme for the longitudinal direction and an implicit scheme for the vertical direction, the numerical model is free from the restriction of temporal step size caused by a relatively small grid ratio. In previous researches, some terms induced from the transformation have been intentionally excluded since they are asked the complicate discretization of the numerical model. However, the lack of these terms introduces significant errors during the numerical simulation of scalar transport problems, such as saltwater intrusion and sediment transport in an estuary. The numerical accuracy attributable to the full transformation is verified by comparing results with a previous model in a simply sloped topography. The numerical model is applied to the Han River estuary. Very reasonable agreements for salinity intrusion are observed.

The purpose of this study is to develop a integrated(fusion) utilization model aimed at maximizing the development/management functions of urban estuarine area and to present an integrated concept by analyzing the existing document and data. The main points of this study are as follows: 1) The integrated utilization model suggested in this paper goes beyond the existing idea of sustainable utilization and conservation, putting an emphasis on rational decision-making in estuary management and peaceful coexistence between human and nature. 2) Policies for utilization/development/conservation/regeneration of urban estuarine area include the establishment of communication system between human and nature and a safety net considering both human and nature, the support for environment-friendly community development and the importance of preserving valuable ecosystem and wetland habitat. 3) Lastly, this study suggested that the major tasks for the fusion utilization model development are the integrated management of estuary areas, the conservation and preservation of wetland ecosystem, proper utilization of estuary's productivity, and the introduction and action plans of the integrated management model including the best way to address contamination and disaster management.
This study was conducted to investigate the habitat use of White-naped Cranes Grus vipio in Han river estuary during the wintering period from 2006 to 2008 (October$\sim$March). The average numbers of wintering White-naped Cranes were 106.6$\pm$21.7 (Mean$\pm$SD) individuals, and the highest number of 140 individuals were recorded in the early January, 2008. The wintering habitat use of White-naped Cranes between rice field and mudflat was not significantly different (Mann-Whitney test. p=0.40) during the wintering period. However, White-naped Cranes spent more time on the rice field in the early winter (p<0.01), and on the mudflat in the late winter(p<0.01). There was not a difference of the habitat use rate on middle winter. White-naped cranes used four different sites of rice field: Hongdopyoung, Pyoungdong, Ihwadong and Janghang rice fields. Among them, Hongdopyoung was the main foraging site. There was significant differences of habitat use ratio in the early and mid winter ((Kruskal-wallis test. p<0.01). White-naped Cranes used mudflat area from Gimpo Daegyo to Nusanri of Han river estuary. Especially, they preferred four sites from Gimpo Daegyo to Ilsan Daegyo more than the other sites. Habitat use rate of mud flats were significantly different among each site during the wintering period (Kruskal-wallis test. p<0.01)

To obtain more accurate meteorological data for analyzing the river discharge characteristics at the Nakdong River Estuary, we investigated the characteristics of the release barrage discharge observed during the 13-year period from 1996 to 2008 and calculated the differences using meteorological data for the Busan and Gimhae weather stations. The river discharge estimated using a tank model was compared to the real river barrage discharge. We discussed the correlation between the discharge and the meteorological factors that affected the estuary water environment. This study found that total annual discharge from the Nakdong river basin for the 13 years was $272,653.3{\times}10^6\;m^3$/month. The largest monthly mean release discharge occurred in July at $73,212.9{\times}10^6\;m^3$/month (26.9% for the year), followed by August and September in that order with 22.0% and 18.9%, respectively.

To elucidate the species compositions of estuarine and inshore fauna and compare productivities between them, catch were collected by bag nets in the Han River estuary off Ganghwa Island and the inshore waters off Jangbong Island for 24 hours at the spring tide from March to December 2010. Community structures of nekton assemblages were different with area, month, taxonomic groups. Although the diversity of estuarine nekton assemblage was lower than that of inshore nekton assemblage, the productivity of nekton assemblage in estuary was higher than that in the inshore waters. Nekton assemblages were distributed according to habitat environment: the estuarine species, Coilia mystus, Chelon haematocheilus, Collichthys lucidus were prominent in the Han River estuary off Ganghwa Island, and marine species, Thryssa kammalensis, Sardinella zunasi, Portunus trituberculatus were prominent in the inshore waters off Jangbong Island. Palaemon gravieri, Exopalaemon carinicauda, Synechogobius hasta were inhabited in both waters. The health assessment of estuarine ecosystem based on scientific research will be contributed to the effective management of estuary with determination of order and direction in policy.

Coastal sand dunes are dynamic and fragile buffer zones of sand and vegetation where the following three characteristics can be found: large quantities of sand, persistent wind capable of moving sand, and suitable locations for sand to accumulate. The functional properties of coastal sand dunes include the roles in sand storage, underground freshwater storage, coastal defense, and ecological environment space, among others. Recently, however, the integrity of coastal dune systems has been threatened by development, including sand extraction for the construction industry, military usage, conversion to golf courses, the building of seawalls and breakwaters, and recreational facility development. In this paper, we examined the development mechanisms and structural/format types of coastal sand dunes, as well as their functions and value from the perspective of coastal engineering based on reviews of previous researches and a case study of a small coastal sand dune in the Nakdong river estuary. Existing data indicate that there are a total of 133 coastal sand dunes in South Korea, 43 distributed on the East Sea coast (32 in the Gangwon area, and 11 in Gyeongsangbuk-do), 60 on the West Sea coast (4 in Incheon and Gyeonggi-do, 42 in Ghungcheongnam-do, 9 in Jellabuk-do, and 5 in Jellanam-do), and 30 on the South Sea coast (16 in Jellanam-do, 2 in Gyeongsangnam-do, and 12 in Jeju).

This study analyzed the possibility of inland navigation in the Han river mouth, from Singok weir to the junction of Gongleung Stream. As a result of analysis using recent survey data and water level data, it was found that the number of days that a 250 - 400 ton class vessel can operate in the Han river estuary is less than 119 days per year. In the case of a 400 - 1,500 ton class vessel, it was found that only about 47 days per year can be operated. In this region, even in the absence of large-scale floods, the river bed continues to change significantly due to strong tides, indicating that there are limitations in securing a stable waterway. Therefore, for stable inland navigation, it is judged that continuous investigation and analysis of the possibility and stability of waterways are necessary.
