  • Amount of the web traffic web server handles are explosively increasing, which requires that the performance of the web server should be improved for the various web services. Although the analysis for the HTTP traffic with the proper tuning for the web server is essential, the research relevant to the subject are insignificant. In particular, although most of applications are implemented over HTTP 1.1 protocol, the researches mostly deal with the performance evaluation of the HTTP 1.0 protocol. Consequently, the modeling approach and the performance evaluation over HTTP 1.1 protocol have not been well formed. Therefore, basing on the HTTP 1.1 protocol supporting persistent connection, we present an analytical end-to-end tandem queueing model for web server to consider the specific hardware configuration inside web server beginning at accepting the user request until completing the service. we compare various performances between HTTP 1.0 and HTTP 1.1 under the overloading condition, and then analyze the characteristics of the HTTP traffic that include file size requested to web server, the OFF time between file transfers, the frequency of requests, and the temporal locality of requests. Presented model is verified through the comparing the server throughput according to varying requests rate with the real web server. Thereafter, we analyze the performance evaluation of the web server, according to the interrelation between TCP Listen queue size, the number of HTTP threads and the size of the network buffers.

  • A heterogeneous webserver such as an HTTP server should be able to currently deal with numerous users. To the end, it is inevitable to formally analyze web traffics as well as a webserver itself. In particular, as most systems adopt HTTP 1.1 protocol instead of HTTP 1.0 protocol, it is more difficult to represent the system as a simple analytic mode. In addition, since most of previous models missed the detailed processes of the server, it is unsuitable for the current server based on HTTP 1.1 to tune itself with its own system parameters. On the basis of HTTP 1.1 Protocol supporting persistent connections, we thus present an analytical end-to-end tandem queueing model considering specific hardware configurations inside the webserver, which ultimately covers from accepting the customer requests to completing the services.

  • The continuously growing internet service requirements has resulted in a multitier system structure consisting of web server and database (DB) server. In this multitier structure, the existing intrusion detection system (IDS) detects known attacks by matching misused traffic patterns or signatures. However, malicious change to the contents at DB server through hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) requests at the DB server cannot be detected by the IDS at the DB server's end, since the DB server processes structured query language (SQL) without knowing the associated HTTP, while the web server cannot identify the response associated with the attacker's SQL query. To detect these types of attacks, the malicious user is tracked using knowledge on interaction between HTTP request and SQL query. However, this is a practical challenge because system's source code analysis and its application logic needs to be understood completely. In this study, we proposed a scheme to find the HTTP request associated with a given SQL query using only system log files. We first generated an HTTP request-SQL query map from system log files alone. Subsequently, the HTTP request associated with a given SQL query was identified among a set of HTTP requests using this map. Computer simulations indicated that the proposed scheme finds the HTTP request associated with a given SQL query with 94% accuracy.

  • HTTP/1.1 standard reduces latencies and overhead from closing and re-establishing connections by supporting persistent connections as a default, which encourage multiple transfers of objects over one connection. HTTP/1.1, however, does not define explicitly connection-closing time but specifies a certain fixed holding time model. This model may induce wasting server's resource when server maintains conn ection with the idle-state client that requests no data for a certain time. This paper proposes the mechanism of a heuristic connection management supported by the client-side under persistent HTTP, in addition to HTTP/1.1's fixed holding time model on server-side. The client exploits the tag information within transferred HTML page so that decides connection-closing time. As a result, the mechanism allows server to use server's resource more efficiently without server's efforts.

  • In these days, such services are popularized as E-commerce, E-government, multimedia services, and home networking applications. Most web traffics generated contemporarily basically use the Hyper Text Transfer Protocol(HTTP). Unfortunately, the HTTP is improper for these applications that comprise significant components of the web traffics. In this paper, we introduce a real-time contents compression architecture that maximizes the web service performance as well as reduces the response time. This architecture is built into the linux kernel-based web accelerating module. It guarantees not only the freshness of compressed contents but also the minimum time delay using an server-state adaptive algorithm, which can determine whether the server sends the compressed message considering the consumption of server resources when heavy requests reach the web server Also, We minimize the CPU overhead of the web server by exclusively implementing the compression kernel-thread. The testing results validates that this architecture saves the bandwidth of the web server and that elapsed time improvement is dramatic.

  • In this paper, It is studied to control and to monitor the remote system state using HTTP(Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) object communication. The remote control system is controlled by using a web browser or a application program. This system is organized by three different part depending on functionality-server part, client part, controller part. The java technology is used to composite the server part and the client part and C language is used for a controller. The server part is waiting for the request of client part and then the request is reached, the server part saves client data to the database and send a command set to the client part. The administrator can control the remote system just using a web browser. Remote part is worked by timer that is activated per 1 second. It gets the measurement data of the controller part, and then send the request to the server part and get a command set in the command repository of server part using the client ID. After interpreting the command set, the client part transfers the command set to the controller part. Controller part can be activated by the client part. If send command is transmitted by the client part, it sends sensor monitoring data to the client part and command set is transmitted then setting up the value of the controlled system.

  • Recently, HAS (HTTP Adaptive Streaming) has been the subject of much attention to improve the QoE (Quality of Experience). In a high latency network, HAS degrades the QoE due to the lost RTT cycle since it replies with a response of one segment to the request of one segment. The server-push based HAS schemes of downloading multiple segments in one request cause QoE degradation due to the buffer underflow. In this paper, we propose a VSSDS (Video Streaming Scheme based on Dynamic Server-push) scheme to improve the QoE in a high latency network. The proposed scheme adjust video quality by estimating available bandwidth and determine the number of segments to be downloaded for each segment request cycle. Through the simulation, the proposed scheme not only improves the average video bitrate but also alleviates the buffer underflow.
