  • Reduction of AC losses is very important for realizing HTS cable and it had been reported that the same layer current controlled by twisting pitch and direction could reduce the AC losses effectively. During the long-term development of HTS cables, the superconductor AC losses will need to be reduced to a level determined by the economics of each installation and the efficiency of the refrigeration. Theoretical models have been developed to predict the magnitude of the losses in cables composed of several layers of flat HTS tapes. This paper is manufactured mini-model HTS cable and voltage signal line to spiral shape. Mini-model HTS cable is composed of 13 HTS tape. We measured to critical current and AC loss and compared used lock-in-amp to cancel coil. This data is useful to HTS cable of DAPAS program.

  • The development of a magnet for very high magnetic field is usually envisioned with the use of an HTS insert coil. Pancake windings have been commonly used for the insert coil. All pancake windings have been connected in series and excited by a single power source. In that case, it is inevitable to operate some of the pancake windings well below their critical current densities. To increase the central magnetic field of the magnet, this paper proposed a new excitation method of the pancake windings by exciting the pancakes windings independently using multiple power sources. Results of the calculation show proposed method increases the central magnetic field of the magnet which consisted of 8 pancake windings by 17% comparing with excitation by using a single power source.

  • This paper introduces design processes of 10 MW class superconducting generator for wind Turbine. Superconducting generator can produce 5 times stronger magnetic field than permanent magnet at least, which enables large scale wind turbine to function as a lighter, smaller and more highly efficient system. These processes are targeted for higher efficiency and shorter high temperature superconductor (HTS) wires to fabricate 10 MW class superconducting generator. Three different approaches will be described in these design processes. First design process focuses on the number of rotor poles. Secondly, 270 and 360 A operating current of superconducting field coil can be adapted as a design parameter in this process. Lastly, 3 and 6 kV line to line voltage of stator coil will be used to design 10 MW class superconducting generator.

  • For the experiment the four types of spacer were distinguished by arrangement. The flashover characteristic on each types of spacer was investigated and the flashover phenomena were observed to understand breakdown mechanism in liquid nitrogen($LN_{2}$). The spacer should be placed interior coil as an insulator, a cooling channel and s supporter of structures. The simulated electrode used in the experiment was made from five turns of HTS tape. Experimental results revealed that multi-layer and barrier effects did work well in Air but did not in $LN_{2}$. These result suggested that the flashover in LN2 caused by the bubbles due to partial discharge at micro gap, g. The flashover characteristics decreased to 70% when g is 0.2 mm. The degradation was improved by even treatment on surface of coil electrode.

  • This paper presents an analytic method to calculate energy conversion between electromagnetically coupled high-temperature superconducting and copper coils. The energy transfer from one coil to the other is commonly observed during quench of a no-insulation (NI) high temperature superconductor (HTS) magnet. Proper understanding of this phenomenon is particularly important to protect an NI HTS magnet, especially to avoid any potential mechanical damages. In this paper, analytic equations are obtained to estimate the energy transfer between the NI and copper coils. The well-known lumped-parameter circuit model is adopted provided that key parameters of the coils are given.

  • A superconducting synchronous motor with rotating field coil has been designed. This rotating field coil is composed of high-temperature superconducting(HTS) wire but the stationary armature windings are composed of conventional copper wire. In this paper a 5MW class synchronous motor with rotating HTS coil is designed. This motor is aimed to be utilized for ship propulsion so it has very low-speed. Firstly an air-cored type has been designed, which does not have any iron core both at the field and at the armature teeth. Secondly several iron-cored rotor types are considered to reduce expensive HTS wire cost.

  • The turn-to-turn contact resistance of 2G high temperature superconducting (HTS) coils with metal insulation (MI) is closely related to the stability of the coils, current charging rate and delay time [1]. MI coils were fabricated using five kinds of metal tapes such as aluminum (Al) tape, brass tape, stainless steel (SS) tape, copper (Cu)-plated tape and one-sided Cu-plated SS tape. The turn-to-turn contact surface resistances of co-winding model coils using Al tape, brass tape, and SS tape were 342.6, 343.6 and $724.8{\mu}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$, respectively. The turn-to-turn contact resistance of the model coil using the one-sided Cu-plated SS tape was $ 248.8{\mu}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$, which was lower than that of Al and brass tape. Al or brass tape can be used to reduce contact resistance and improve the stability of the coil. Considering strength, SS tape is recommended. For strength and low contact resistance, SS tape with copper plating on one side can be used.

  • The pulsed field magnetization of the short-circuited soldered double pancake coil made of stabilized commercial high-Tc superconductor (HTS) tape is experimentally studied. The evolution of the shielding current induced by the pulsed field and the trapped field after the pulsed magnetization was measured at 77 K. It is shown that the trapped field in the coil is close to the value reached in the field cooling process and reduces weakly at 5-fold increasing of pulsed field amplitude. The current relaxation at t~2 ms after the pulse is defined by the current sharing between the tape's copper coating and the $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-d}$ layer. In the intermediate time scale (1 s < t < 100 s) the flux creep in HTS layer dominates. At t > 100 s the current's relaxation is defined by the resistance of soldered joint between tapes.

  • Smart fault current controller (SFCC) proposed in our previous work consists of a power converter, a high temperature superconducting (HTS) DC reactor, thyristors, and a control unit [1]. SFCC can limit and control the current by adjusting firing angles of thyristors when a fault occurs. SFCC has complex structure because the HTS DC reactor generates the loss under AC. To use the DC reactor under AC, rectifier that consists of four thyristors is needed and it increases internal resistance of SFCC. For this reason, authors propose a hybrid type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL). The hybrid type SFCL proposed in this paper consists of a non-inductive superconducting coil and two thyristors. To verify the feasibility of the proposed hybrid type SFCL, simulations about the interaction of the superconducting coil and thyristors are conducted when fault current flows in the superconducting coil. Authors expect that the hybrid type SFCL can control the magnitude of the fault current by adjusting the firing angles of thyristors after the superconducting coil limits the fault current at first peak.

  • In various types of large-scale electrical applications, the number of coil turns in such machines is usually large. Electromagnetic simulation of large-scale superconducting coils (tens to hundreds of turns) is indispensable in the design process of superconducting electrical equipment. However, due to the large scale of the coil and the large aspect ratio of super-conducting material layer in HTS coated conductor, it is usually difficult or even unable to perform 3-D transient electromagnetic simulation. This paper introduces an effective 3-D electromagnetic simulation method for large-scale HTS coated conductor coil based on T-A formulation. The simulation and experimental results show that the 3-D model based on the T-A formulation using homogeneous strategy is more accurate than the traditional 2-D models. The memory usage is not sensitive to the number of turns and this model will be even more superior as the number of turns becomes larger.
