This study was done to investigate the nutrient intakes and plasma biochemcial indices in 68 female college students according to their skin types. Nutrient intakes were investigated by quick estimation. The plasma TG and total cholesterol levels were measured by the Spotchem sp-4410. The plasma levels of retinol and $\alpha$-tocopherol were measured by HPLC. In addition, the activities of antioxidant defense enzymes such as plasma glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px) and glutathione reductase(GHS-Rd) were determined. All data were statistically analyzed by SAS PC package program. The results of this study were as follows : The average age, height, weight, BMI, systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure ofthe subjects were $20.9{\pm}1.9yr, 160.7{\pm}4.3cm, 53.0{\pm}7.1kg, 20.5{\pm}2.4kg/m^2, 105.3{\pm}11.5mmHg and 70.6{\pm}7.7mmHg$, respectively. Ten students(14.7%) had normal skin type, 19 students(27.9%) had dry skin type, 11 students(16.2%) had oily skin type, 17 students(25.0%) had acne and 11 students(16.2%) had mixed skin type. The intakes of energy and fats in oily skin group were significantly higher(p<0.05) than those of the dry skin group, but vitamin C intake in the mixed skin group was significantly higher(p<0.05) than those of the dry skin group, but vitamin C intake in the mixed skin group was significantly lower(p<0.05) than that in other skin types. The intakes of other nutrients were not significantly different among skin types. The analysis of lipids showed that the plasma total-cholesterol level of mixed skin group was significantly lower(p<0.05) than that of the oily skin group, whereas other lipid levels were not significantly different. The other parameters such as retinol, $\alpha$-tocopherol, GSH-Px and GSH-Rd of plasma were not significantly different among skin types. Overall results indicate that dietary intake pattern may influence skin type and thereby some blood biochemical indices can be different by skin types.
Benzo(a)pyrene [B(a)P], one of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) is know as a potent careinogen. As consumption of lipid food and fried food increases recently, the toxic effect of overheated lipid foods has report increasingly. This study was undertaken to measure the contents of B(a)P and other PAHs of fried chicken and frying oil. At the same time, the rancidities of frying oil and descarded oil were determined. B(a)P and other PAHs contents of all samples were measured by HPLC/UV method. The results obtained were as follows; B(a)P contents of fresh chicken and soybean oil were 0.073 and 0.146 ${\mu}$g/kg, respectively. During fried chicken at 180${\pm}$5$^{\circ}C$ and 200${\pm}$5$^{\circ}C$, B(a)P and PAHs contens decreased or increased In 20 times fried chicken, PAHs contents except Pyr and DMBA increased at 180${\pm}$5$^{\circ}C$ and PAHs contents except DMBA, DBA, and 3-MC increased at 200${\pm}$5$^{\circ}C$. In frying oils fried chicken, PAHs contents increased in 10 and 15 times frying oil at 180${\pm}$5$^{\circ}C$ and grew more increase and more increase during frying at 200${\pm}$5$^{\circ}C$. The changing pattern of PAHs contents of frying oils was remotely related that of rancidities of frying oils. In fried chicken, frying oils, and discarded oils obtained from fried chicken house at market, PAHs contents of fried chickens were lower than those of fried chicken cooked at laboratory but those of frying oils and discarded oils were higher than those of frying oils cooked at laboratory.
In this study, we evaluated the whitening activity of prethanol A and water extracts from Abeliophyllum distichum Nakai. The extracts were prepared using 0, 50, 70, and 100% prethanol A at $121^{\circ}C$, 1.2 atm for 15 minutes. To confirm effective extraction, the acteoside content of each extract was analyzed with the HPLC-PDA method. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using DPPH and ABTS scavenging activity assays, and the whitening activity was evaluated based on inhibitory activities on the protein and mRNA expression of tyrosinase, tyrosinase-related protein 1 (TRP-1), tyrosinase-related protein 2 (TRP-2), and microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) in B16 F10 cells. Each extract showed strong antioxidant and whitening activity. $IC_{50}$ values of antioxidant activity from each extract were in order of 100%, 70%, 50%, and 0%. In addition, whitening activity inhibited the protein and mRNA expression of melanin synthesis factor, following the same pattern as antioxidant activity. In conclusion, water and prethanol A extracts of A. distichum showed effective antioxidant and whitening activity and are thus considered to be valuable materials for whitening cosmetics. The results of this study will also provide basic data for the safe and efficient production of A. distichum as a cosmetic material.
BACKGROUND: The residue dissipation pattern of pesticides for agricultural products during the pre-harvest period after the final application is important to prevent the maximum residue limit (MRL) violations in domestic and export markets. The MRL violations of carbendazim are observed more often in chamnamul by pesticide residue management surveys by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. The residue level at the pre-harvest interval (PHI) and the residue dissipation constant from the critical good agricultural practice (cGAP) trials could be estimated to meet the MRL and pose a health risk to consumers. METHODS AND RESULTS: Chamnamuls were harvested at 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, and 14 days after application of carbendazim in accordance with critical GAP. The residue analysis in chamnanul was performed by HPLC-DAD with the C18 column. The limit of quantitation of carbendazim was 0.04 mg/kg, and the recoveries were 74.4 - 95.8% at the two spiked levels (LOQ and 10LOQ) of carbendazim. The dissipation rates in chamnamul were calculated from the residues at the sampling days by statistical method at a 95% confidence level. The biological half-lives of residual carbendazim in the field trials 1 and 2 were 4.9 and 4.4 days, respectively. CONCLUSION(S): In this dissipation study, the residue concentrations at the recommended PHI were higher than the established MRL in Korea. Therefore, the MRL is proposed based on the residue data sets from the trials conducted at the same cGAP and the dietary exposure assessment.
The evidence containing some kind of petroleum at the fire spot was analyzed by gas chromatography to identify a fire's sources. To extract some petroleum from fire evidence, 10.0 mL of n-hexane was added in this solution, and it was shaken for 30 minutes. To identify a kind of petroleum in fire evidence, the prepared n-hexane solution was injected and analyzed in the gas chromatograph. The chromatogram of sample was different from those of thinner and gasoline that have low boiling point, and shown different peak pattern to heating and boiler oils. But it was similar to the chromatogram of diesel oil. After small amount of diesel oil was added to the sample, the area of characteristic peaks was increased more than those of raw sample. From the results, the kind of petroleum in the fire evidence was diesel oil.
Pesticide, chlorfluazuron was subjected to determine the safety of terminal residues at the harvesting date of perilla leaves cultivated in plastic house. After the pesticide applied on a foliar spray in 2005 and 2006, leaf persistence of its residue was analysed for 10 days before leaf harvest. The degradation rate of chlorfluazuron in the leaf was 32.3 %(standard application), 43.6 %(double application) and 78.0 %(standard), 80.4 %(double) at second and tenth day, respectively, under analysis of GC/ECD in 2005. The degradation rate of chlorfluazuron in the leaf was 33.1 %(GC/ECD analyze), 34.0 %(HPLC/UVD analyze) and 77.9 %(GC/ECD), 78.4 %(HPLC/UVD) at second and tenth day, respectively, under the standard level of pesticide in 2006. The biological half-life of the chlorfluazuron residue was estimated by the regression equation calculated from daily dissipation of pesticide in the perilla leaves. The longest half-life of the chlorfluazuron residue in perilla leaves was 5.5 days. The maximum residual limit(MRL) for chlorfluazuron based on the longest half-life was estimated 2.0ppm at harvesting day, 2.5ppm at second day and 7.1ppm at tenth day before leaf harvesting of perilla.

Distribution characteristics of phytoplankton community were investigated by HPLC and flow cytometry in Jeju Strait and the Northern East China Sea (NECS) in May 2004, in order to understand the relationship between physical environmental factors and distribution pattern of phytoplankton communities. Based on temperature and salinity data, three distinct water masses were identified; warm and saline Tsushima Warm Current (TWC), which is flowing from northwest of Jeju Island, warm and low saline water at the center of Jeju Strait, which is originated from China Coastal Water (CCW) and relatively cold and high saline water originated from Yellow Sea at the bottom of the Jeju Strait. At Jeju Strait, less saline water (<33 psu) of 15 km width occupied surface layer up to 20 m which located at 20 km offshore and strong thermal front between warm and saline water and cold and less saline water was found in the middle of the Jeju Strait. Vertical transect of temperature and salinity at the NECS also showed that low saline (<33 psu) water occupied the upper 20 m layer and cold and saline water was present at the eastern part. Chl a was measured as $0.06{\sim}3.07\;{\mu}g/L$. Spring bloom of phytoplankton was recognized by the high concentrations of Chl a at the low saline water masses influenced by the CCW and subsurface chlorophyll maximum layer appeared between $20{\sim}30\;m$ depth, which was at thermocline depth or below. Abundances of Synechococcus and picoeukaryote were $0.2{\sim}9.5{\times}10^4\;cells/mL$ and $0.43{\sim}4.3{\times}10^4\;cells/mL$, respectively. Dinoflagellate, diatom and prymnesiophyte were major groups and minor groups were chlorophyte+prasinophyte, chrysophyte, cryptophyte and cyanophyte. Especially high abundance of dinoflagellate was identified by high concentration (>1\;{\mu}g/L$) of peridinin at the bottom of the thermocline, which showed an outbreak of red tide by high density of dinoflagellates. Abundances of picoeukaryote in Jeju Strait were about $5{\sim}10$ times higher than abundance measured in Kuroshio water and showed a good correlation with Chl b (Pras+Viola), which implies the most of population of picoeukaryote was composed of prasinophytes. Prochlorococcus was not detected at all, which suggests that Kuroshio Current did not directly influenced on the study area. Based on the strong negative correlations between biomass of phytoplankton (Chl a) and temperature+salinity, the primary production and biomass of phytoplankton in the study area were controlled by the nutrients supply from CCW.
The present study was aimed at establishing what changes occur in the dopamine levels and pattern of TH-immunoreactive neurons of certain areas of rat brain during food intake suppression produced by intraperitoneally administration of CCK-8. CCK-8 in dose of $10\;{\mu}g/kg$ was injected intraperitoneally to 48 h food-deprived rats. In the fasted group, the contents of dopamine were decreased in the frontal, striatum, hypothalamus and amygdala as compared to those of the fed control group. The administration of CCK-8 showed significant decrease on the dopamine levels of the hypothalamus, in comparison to those of the sated and starved group. During deprived condition, the density and number of TH-immunoreactive neurons in the paraventricular nucleus, arcuate nucleus, median eminence and substantia nigra were lower than those of the fed control group. After administration of CCK-8, the pattern and distribution of TH-positive neouons in the hypothalamic areas and substantia nigra were increased when compared to those of the starved group. It is concluded that the results demonstrate the partial involvement of hypothalamic dopamine-containing neurons in the feeding inhibition of CCK-8. Furthermore, the results indicate that TH-immunoreactive neurons play on important role in the hypothalamus and substantia nigra for eating behavior
Lentinus ededes were irradiated with Utraviolet-B(UV-B) at 0, 2.5, 5.0 J/$\textrm{cm}^2$ levels while culturing in sawdust medium, and the changes in vitamin D$_2$ content, color and flavor of the mushroom were analysed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), Hunter-Lab Chromatometer and Gas Chromatography-Surface Acoustic Wave (GC-SAW) electric nose, respectively. Irradiation of 0, 2.5, 5.0 J/$\textrm{cm}^2$ doses of UV-B increased the content of vitamin D$_2$ in the mushroom significantly, which was 157∼206% higher than the control group. There was a significant difference in L value between the control group and UV-B irradiated (2.5 and 5.0 J/$\textrm{cm}^2$) groups. The changes of flavor pattern were detected by GC-SAW electric nose. But the color and flavor changes were not detrimental to the quality of the mushroom. The results suggested that UV-B irradiation is a good way to increase the vitamin D$_2$ content of Lentinus edodes during cultivation.
The chemical conversion pattern of salvianolic acid B (Sal B) in aqueous solution under different boiling conditions was compared. When the duration of boiling was varied, without varying temperature or pressure, the content of chemically converted compounds (CCCs) was mostly increased over time. In addition, under different conditions of temperature and pressure with the same boiling time, the content of a few compounds increased with increasing temperature and pressure. These results confirmed that high temperatures and pressures in boiling alter the final composition of CCCs of Sal B. Therefore, it was suggested that the boiling conditions (time, temperature, and pressure) may be responsible for alteration of biological activities of the compounds. Our investigation of the chemical conversion of compounds contained in foods and medicinal herbs may provide important information in clarifying the biological activity of Sal B containing foods and medicinal herbs.
