This study aimed to investigate the immediate physiological responses, including heart rate, blood pressure, and rate pressure product (RPP), following squat exercises performed at three water depths (ground, knee depth, waist depth) and two speed conditions (60bpm speed, Max speed). The participants consisted of 10 men in their 20s with over 6 months of resistance exercise experience. For the 60bpm speed squats, participants performed 30 repetitions in 1 minute at a rate of 2 seconds per repetition, while for Max speed squats, they performed at Max speed without a set limit on the number of repetitions for 1 minute. All experiments were conducted with a random assignment. The study results showed that immediately after the aquatic squat exercise, the average heart rate, blood pressure, and cardiac load were higher in the order of knee depth, ground level, and waist depth at both 60bpm speed and Max Speed. At 60bpm speed, the heart rate was higher in the order of ground level, knee depth, and waist depth. Overall, exercise in an aquatic environment was considered to impose relatively lower physical burden compared to land-based exercise. Therefore, it is suggested that depending on individual fitness levels and exercise goals, appropriately combining aquatic exercise, which imposes lower immediate physiological burden, and land-based exercise may lead to safer and more effective exercise methods.
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of breath-counting meditation (BCM) and deep breathing (DB) on heart rate variability (HRV). These breathing techniques have the characteristics of non-paced and self-controlled breathings, resulting in less increase of HRV. We also compared BCM and DB with usual breathing (UB) or relaxing breathing (RB) which can reveal the characteristics of those. Methods: 83 healthy volunteers sitting in chairs performed non-paced breathing; UB, RB, BCM, and DB each for 5 minutes. One minute of relaxation was permitted between breathings. Participants surfed the internet sitting in front of a computer during UB, while for RB, they remained steady with eyes closed. For BCM, they breathed inwardly counting from 1 to 10 repetitively, while they took a deep breath during DB. Physiological indices were simultaneously recorded with a biofeedback system. Results: Respiration rate, thoracic amplitude, and mean heart rate decreased in RB compared with UB, but there was no change in HRV. Respiration rate in BCM and DB was lower than that in UB or RB, and the amplitude of thorax or abdomen, and HRV all increased (p<0.05). However, mean heart rate and skin conductance decreased in BCM compared with UB (p<0.05), whereas those were no different between DB and UB. Conclusion: BCM, just concentrating mentally on breathing with counting each breath, can increase HRV with less sympathetic activation, while DB, actively moving thorax and abdomen for achieving the deepest respiration rate, can greatly raise HRV with the maintenance of mean vagal or sympathetic tone.
During 9 months (March-November, 1989), observation of Leucocytozoon infection rate to blood and parenchymatous viscera (spleen, liver, heart) in Pusan, Gyeongnam (Kimhae, Yangsan) districts slaughtered chicken and the results obtained were as follow : 1. Among the blood smear sample of 213 heads of the chicken, 43 heads (20.2%) were infected with Leucocytozoon 2nd stage gametocyte and 4 heads (1.9%) were mixed infected with Leucocytozoon 5th stage gametocyte. 2. In histopathological detection of schizont in tissues section of spleen, liver and heart, there were 16.7% in spleen, 5.6% in liver and 9.1% in heart, mean detection rate were 10.6%. Spleen had the highest detection rate of schizont. 3. In seasonal-related Infection rate, summer was higher than spring.
This paper describes the effect of autonomic nervous activity on Heart rate variability and peripheral blood pressure with power spectral analysis and its characteristics of chaotic attractors. The aim of this paper is to access the applicability of spectral and dimension analysis of heart rate variability and peripheral blood pressure, attributed to changes in autonomic nervous system activity. About 60 mininutes of Heart rates and synchronized peripheral blood pressure were recorded on 10 healthy man while various mental and physical conditions. The results shows the availability to evaluate the autonomic nervous activities.

It is known that blood circulation in human body causes the skin tone to change concurrently with heartbeats. A number of apps have been developed to measure the heartbeat using smartphone camera; however, no any further analysis is performed. In this paper we propose an algorithm that detects heartbeats from the phone's camera and further extracts the heart rate variability (HRV). We compare the HRV extracted from the camera with the HRV extracted from the electrocardiogram. We estimated a number of commonly used HRV characteristics and compared them. Our results show that smartphone camera leads to slightly overestimated characteristics although the difference in extracted HRV signals is negligible. As a consequence we suggest that a smartphone camera can be employed in a quick heart diagnosis and diagnosis of autonomic nervous system.
The purpose of this study was to determine whether Rescue Remedy, the most popular Bach flower, was effective in reducing stress and fear in pets, thereby alleviating behavioral problems such as aggression and improving the welfare of canines. The evaluation was conducted with canines without diseases or behavioral problems. Two male Spitz dogs (average age 15 years, average weight 8 kg), one female Spitz dog (age 12 years, weight 8 kg), and nine Shetland sheep dogs (average age, 11 years, average weight 9 kg) were used in the study. Responses in the heart rate were found in three groups of dogs during nail trimming (P < 0.05). Heart rate variability in each of the three canines that were 8 and 13 years old were similar on the Bach flower remedy (P > 0.05). Ethogram observations during nail cutting indicated a reduction in aberrant behavior after administration of Bach Flower remedy. In conclusion, the application of Bach flower Rescue Remedies resulted in substantially lower heart rates and a reduction in stress-related behaviors was observed.
Postoperative cardiac outputs and other hernoaynamic values were serially measured in fifteen patients of cyanotic congenital heart disease, after use of blood cardioplegic solution. Cardiac indices showed no change untill eight postoparative hours, then it began to decline to reach as low as 3.22$\pm$0.7L/min/m2 at 12 hours. After then gradual increse occ-ured to recover upto immediate postoperative value at 20 hours. Sharp decrese of heart rate and increse of systemic vascular resistance during 8~16 hours and steady increase of stroke indices during the whole study periods were observed. These observations suggested that the myocardium recovered gradually after open heart surgery, and that the decrease of cardiac indices during 8~16 hours could be a result of decrease of heart rates and increase of afterload. The changes of cardiac indices correlated with the changes of heart rate, postoperative time and mixed venous oxygen saturation [p<0.05]. No other hemodynamic values found to be in statistically significant correlation with the changes of cardiac indices. Left ventricular dysfunction seemed to occur more frequently during 8~12 hours, but it was not statistically significant. [p=0.73] In conclusion, great care must be taken during 2~3 days after the operation of cyanotic congenital heart disease, not to fall into a low cardiac output state, by maintaing adequate heart rates and reducing afterload especially when the systemic vascular resistance increases.
An in vitro model providing with a recirculating perfusion apparatus using an isolated canine heart and its autogenous blood, which was prepared for study of myocardial protection method. This apparatus was easily used by quick connect system and maintained well heart function for about 2 hours. The Langendorff perfusion was initiated for a 10 minute period by introducing perfusate at 37` into the aorta from aortic reservoir located 100 cm above the heart. The isolated perfused working canine heart model was a left heart preparation in which oxygenated perfusion medium [at 37K] entered the cannulated left atrium at a constant flow rate [900ml/ min] under 20 mmHg overflow system and was spontaneously ejected[no electrical pacing] via an cannula against a hydrostatic pressure of 80 cm H2O. During this working period, various indices of cardiac function were measured. The cardiac functions were stable for over 2 hours with perfusion of Krebs-Henseleit solution and autologous blood[1:1] mixture in volume and maintained heart rate ]]3-122/bpm peak systolic pressure 109-113 mmHg, cardiac output 900 ml / min and left atrial mean pressure 8-9 mmHg. In this model, the efficiency of myocardia] protection could be easily measured by means of functional, enzymatic, biochemical and ultrastructural assessment. And also, we believe this model to be a useful assessment screening model of recovery state after long duration of myocardial preservation of donor heart without difficult transplantation procedures.
Yoga is an ancient Indian system of life, encompassing various practices including practices for self-discipline and also for regulating the health states of the individual, being practiced for thousands of years. The present study aims at understanding the effect of two high frequency breathing practices over autonomic nervous system. Forty healthy male volunteers of age $21{\pm}2$ years with $9{\pm}3$ months of Yoga practice experience were recruited. The two high frequency Yoga breathing practices, kapalabhati (KB) and bhastrika (BH) were given as interventions randomly on either of the two days to minimise laboratory bias. They were assessed before and immediately after the interventions for heart rate, respiratory rate, heart rate variability (HRV), blood pressure and peripheral oxygen saturation. There was a significant increase in heart rate (p<0.01; p<0.001), systolic blood pressure (p<0.01; p<0.001), NN50 (p<0.01; p<0.001) component of HRV for both KB and BH groups respectively. There was a significant reduction in respiratory rate in both the groups (p<0.001, and p<0.05, BH and KB respectively) immediately following intervention. A significant increase in LF component of HRV and reduction in Diastolic blood pressure and high frequency (HF)component following KB was also observed (p<0.05, for all comparisons). The Mean peripheral oxygen saturation remained unaltered in both the groups (p>0.05).The results suggest that high frequency yoga breathing practices induce physiological arousal immediately as evidenced by increased blood pressure and heart rate. The sympathetic arousal was more following KB session as evidenced by an increased diastolic blood pressure, LF power and a decrease in HF power of HRV as compared to the BH session.

We investigated the effects of acupuncture stimulation on pulse wave variables and heart rate variability (HRV) in healthy adults. To evaluate twenty healthy volunteers (10 men, 10 women) had acupuncture into both Hapkok (Ll4) and Taechung (Liv3) for 15 minutes. Radial pulse, Heart Rate Variability, body temperature and blood pressure were checked before and after acupuncture to evaluate Pulse Wave Variability and Autonomous Function. The results were as follows; Heart rate was significantly increased while systolic blood pressure (mmHg) and diastolic blood pressure (mmHg) were significantly increased after acupuncture treatment. Sixteen subjects didn't change representative pulse wave variables after acupuncture treatment. Energy, height of main peak (H1), height of pre-dicrotic valley (H2) and height of descending valley (H4) were decreased while height of dicrotic peak (H5) was significantly decreased after acupuncture treatment. Time to main peak (T1), time to pre-dicrotic valley (T2), time to dicrotic peak (T5), total time (T) and T-T4 were decreased while time to descending valley (T4) was increased after acupuncture treatment. Total area (At), area of main peak (Aw) and ratio of diastolic period area (Ad) were decreased while ratio of systolic period area (As) and angle of main peak (MPA) were increased after acupuncture treatment. The standard deviation of all normal RR intervals (SDNN) was increased while the root mean square of successive differences between the normal heart beats (RMSSD) was significantly increased after acupuncture treatment by time domain analysis. Low frequency power (LF) and LF/HF ratio were decreased while high frequency power (HF) was significantly increased after acupuncture treatment by frequency domain analysis. This study suggests that acupuncture treatment changes pulse wave variability and heart rate variability. Further study on various acupuncture treatment for pulse wave variability and heart rate variability is required.
