  • This paper analyses BER (Bit Error Rate) performance of 2-hop wireless communications networks with hybrid decode-and-forward (HDF) relays. The conventional HDF method is usually based on the receive signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the relay to decide whether to forward the decoded data in order to obviate the erroneous detection at the relay. In contrast, we propose a new solution of using log-likelihood ratio (LLR) as an efficient alternative to SNR. The approximate BER expressions of different HDF schemes are also derived and verified by Monte-Carlo simulations. In addition, we compute the optimum thresholds for HDF schemes. A variety of numerical results demonstrate that the new LLR-based HDF significantly outperforms the SNR-based HDF for any threshold level and relay location under flat Rayleigh fading channel plus AWGN (Additive White Gaussian Noise).

  • In cognitive radio networks, cooperative spectrum sensing schemes are proposed to improve the performance of detecting licensees by secondary users. Commonly, the cooperative sensing can be realized by means of hard decision fusion (HDF) or soft decision fusion (SDF) schemes. The SDF schemes are superior to the HDF ones in terms of the detection performance whereas the HDF schemes are outperforming the SDF ones when the traffic overhead is taken into account. In this paper, a hybrid SFD-HDF cluster-based approach is developed to jointly exploit the advantages of SFD and HDF schemes. Different SDF schemes have been proposed and compared within a given cluster whereas the OR-rule base HDF scheme is applied to combine the decisions reported by cluster headers to a common receiver or base station. The computer simulations show promising results as the performance of the proposed scenario of hybridizing soft and hard fusion schemes is significantly outperforming other different combinations of conventional SDF and HDF schemes while it noticeably reduces the network traffic overhead.

  • This study analysis the effect of various temperatures (20, 35 and $50^{\circ}C$) on the formaldehyde emission from wood composites, which were particleboard (PB), medium density fiberboard (MDF), high density fiberboard (HDF) and laminated HDF (L-HDF) by Japanese desiccator method. Also, to reduce formaldehyde emission by wood composites, it has been suggested that undergo a bake-out conditions. On average, the level of formaldehyde emission increased many times with a $15^{\circ}C$ increase in temperature from 20 to $35^{\circ}C$ for PB, MDF, HDF and L-HDF, respectively. Formaldehyde emissions from wood composites could be expected to increase with increasing ambient temperature. At $35$ for 28 days bake-out treatment of boards, the free formaldehyde emission reduced 67.8% (PB), 40.1% (MDF), 37.8% (HDF), and 35.2% (L-HDF). On the other hand, after the bake-out at $50^{\circ}C$ for 28 days, the formaldehyde concentration decreased by 88.2, 66.9, 62.2 and 59.3% of the concentration before the bake-out for PB, MDF, HDF and L-HDF, respectively. An interesting of the bake-out treatment at $50^{\circ}C$ after 14 days, formaldehyde emission grade of PB & MDF down $E_2$ to $E_1$, and HDF & L-HDF down $E_1$ to $E_0$.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the feasibility of using HDF as surface panels as well as core materials for flush door manufacturing. Several core compositions were developed and applied to manufacture door specimens. Core materials were tested under bending load, door manufacturing process was analysed to find better way of using HDF for door manufacturing, and door specimens were tested under bending, twisting and impact loads. From this study, it was concluded that HDF can be used to manufacture quality flush doors. And it was desirable to use light color HDF as surface panels because dark color HDF caused a problem in manufacturing process by shadow shown through finishing veneer. HDF doors were light, and showed good quality and higher resistance against bending twisting and impact loads.

  • Conventional high-flux hemodialysis (HD) is not as good as normal kidney function. Morbidity and mortality rates of patients receiving HD are still very high. To increase mid-to-large molecule clearance by combining diffusion and convection, on-line hemodiafiltration (HDF) is required. The objective of this study was to compare long-term survival rate of patients treated with on-line HDF to those who received conventional high-flux HD by reviewing data from Chonnam National University Hospital (CNUH). We selected patients who attended the 'CUNH dialysis center' and agreed to participate in the study. Overall, 40 patients with ESRD switched from high flux HD to on-line HDF or started on-line HDF from August 2007 to December 2009. Additionally, a total of 42 patients receiving conventional high-flux HD during the same period were enrolled. We then reviewed long-term survival rate of patients receiving on-line HDF over the next seven years. When we compared survival rates for seven years, the survival rate of the group receiving on-line HDF was 65% (26/40) while that of the group receiving the conventional high-flux HD was 54.8% (23/42). Although the number of patients was small to see survival difference clearly by one specific dialysis modality, there was somewhat difference in survival rate between the two groups. Indicators such as anemia, calcium-phosphate metabolism, nutritional status, treatment adequacy, and hospitalization were also improved in the group receiving HDF. Overall, results of our study showed beneficial effects of on-line HDF on clinical outcomes and survival in chronic HD patients.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the application of a bio-composite made by the addition recycled fiber board flour as filler. Recycled fiber board (high density fiber board, HDF) flour was added to polyolefin polymer low density polyethylene (LDPE) and polypropylene (PP) for the preparation of bio-composite materials. The mechanical properties and processability of the recycled HDF flour filled LDPE and recycled HDF flour filled PP bio-composites were then measured and compared to those of wood flour (WF) and rice-husk flour (RHF) filled LDPE and PP bio-composites, respectively. The tensile and impact strengths of the recycled HDF flour filled LDPE and PP bio-composites had similar mechanical properties to those of the WF and RHF filled LDPE and PP bio-composites. To measure the processability, torques of the bio-composites were also measured. The torques of the HDF flour filled LDPE and PP bio-composites were lower than those of the WF and RHF filled polyolefin (PP and LDPE) bio-composites with a filler loading of 30 wt.%. This result showed definite processability, which was not related with the distribution of the particle size of the material added. The recycled fiber board flour filled bio-composites showed applicability as substitutes for the bio-composites currently used in the bio-composites industry.

  • HDF5 data format is used to effectively store and distribute large volume of Geostationary Ocean Color Imager(GOCI) satellite data. The Korea Ocean Satellite Center has developed and provided a GOCI Data Processing System(GDPS) for general users who are not familiar with HDF5 format. Nevertheless, it is not easy to merge and process Hierarchical Data Format version5(HDF5) data that requires an understanding of satellite data characteristics, needs to learn how to use GDPS, and stores location and attribute information separately. Therefore, the open source R and rhdf5, data.table, and matrixStats packages were used to develop algorithm that could easily utilize satellite data in HDF5 format without the need for the process of using GDPS.

  • Hovenia dulcis which is distributed in Korea, China and Japan is known to show hepatoprotctive effect and reduce the acute alcohol toxicity. In this study, the hepatoprotective effect against the chemically induced experimental liver injury models and lowering effect of blood alcohol level in animal models acutely administered alcohol by the peduncle extracts of Hovenia dulcis var. koreana were investigated. HdfHW-1, and HdfM-1 which are the extracts of fruit peduncles and young branches with hot water or 70% methanol and followed with 100% methanol, were significantly reduced the $CCl_4$ or D-galactosamine/LPS induced damage in sliced liver. The hot water or methanol extracts of fruit peduncle protected dose-dependently against $CCl_4$ induced toxicity in primary hepatocyte culture and particularly, the amount of LDH release was reduced to the control level at 500 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml of hot water extracts. HdfHW-1 also decreased the hepatotoxicity induced by $CCl_4$ in rats. The active components of HdfHW-1 seemed to be high molecular weights because 0.2 M NaCl HdfHW-1 fraction was the most effective among NaCl fractions of HdfHW-1 eluted with various concentrations of NaCl on DEAE 650C column chromatography. HdfM and HdfHW were significantly reduced the levels of blood alcohol in rats and mice administered 40% alcohol. These results indicated that the hot water or methanol extracts of fruit peduncle of Hovenia dulcis var. koreana have hepatoprotective effect and may be reduce alcohol toxicity.

  • This paper proposes a hierarchical dual filtering (HDF) algorithm to estimate the spatial region between a Cloud of Things (CoT) gateway and an Internet of Things (IoT) device. The accuracy of the spatial region estimation is important for autonomous CoT clustering. We conduct spatial region estimation using a hidden Markov model (HMM) with a raw Bluetooth received signal strength indicator (RSSI). However, the accuracy of the region estimation using the validation data is only 53.8%. To increase the accuracy of the spatial region estimation, the HDF algorithm removes the high-frequency signals hierarchically, and alters the parameters according to whether the IoT device moves. The accuracy of spatial region estimation using a raw RSSI, Kalman filter, and HDF are compared to evaluate the effectiveness of the HDF algorithm. The success rate and root mean square error (RMSE) of all regions are 0.538, 0.622, and 0.75, and 0.997, 0.812, and 0.5 when raw RSSI, a Kalman filter, and HDF are used, respectively. The HDF algorithm attains the best results in terms of the success rate and RMSE of spatial region estimation using HMM.

  • The purpose of Electro-Optical Camera (EOC), the primary payload of KOMPSAT-1, is to collect high resolution visible imagery of the Earth including Korean Peninsula. EOC images will be distributed to the public or many user groups including government, public corporations, academic or research institutes. KARI will offer the online service to the users through internet. Some application, e.g., generation of Digital Elevation Model (DEM), needs a secondary data such as satellite ephemeris data, attitude data to process the EOC imagery. EOC imagery with these ancillary information will be distributed in a file of Hierarchical Data Format (HDF) file formal. HDF is a physical file format that allows storage of many different types of scientific data including images, multidimensional data arrays, record oriented data, and point data. By the lack of public domain softwares supporting HDF file format, many public users may not access EOC data without difficulty. The purpose of this research is to develop a browsing system of EOC data for the general users not only for scientists who are the main users of HDF. The system is PC-based and huts user-friendly interface.
