  • In order to simulate the leaching solution of copper sulfide ore in $FeCl_3$ solutions, synthetic solutions with composition of $FeCl_3$-$FeCl_2$-$CuCl_2$-CuCl-NaCl-HCl-$H_2O$ were prepared. The concentration of iron and copper chloride was varied from 0.1 to 1 m in synthetic solutions. The effect of composition on the mixed solution pH and potential at $25^{\circ}C$ was measured. When HCl concentration was constant, the increase of CuCl concentration increased solution pH. The increase of other solutes excluding HCl and CuCl decreased solution pH owing to the increase of the activity coefficient of hydrogen ion. A high CuCl concentration favored the redox equilibrium in the direction of Cu(I), while $FeCl_3$ had the opposite effect.

  • The objectives of this study are to investigate soil contamination in the vicinity of abandoned Au-Ag mine and to apply a remediation technique of liming to tailings. In the study area of the Imcheon Au-Ag mine, soils were sampled in and around the mine the analyzed by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry extracted by both 0.1N HCl and aqua regia. Elevated levels of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn concentrations extracted by 0.1N HCl were found in soils taken from tailings site. These high contents directly influenced metal concentrations in soils taken in the vicinity of the site. This is mainly due to clastic movement by wind and effluent of mine waste water. In addition, relatively enriched concentrations of the metals were found in soils extrated by aqua regia due to strong decomposition of the samples compared with 0.1N HCl extration. According to the statistical approach, metal concentrations in soils by 0.1N HCl had a positive correlation with those by aqua regia extraction. Mine waste waters and stream waters were also sampled around the mine in spring and summer and analyzed by AAS for Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn, and by Ion Chromatography for anions. Like soils developed over tailings, significant levels of metals and sulphates were found in the mine waste waters ranging of 0.2~0.3, 0.5~2.0, 0.2~2.8, 30~50 and 1,240~4,700 mg/l of Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn and $SO_4^{2-}$, respectively. These elevated levels influenced in the stream waters in the vicinity of the tailings site. In seasonal variation of metal and anion contents, relatively high levels were found in waters sampled on summer due to leaching the metals and anions from tailings by rain. This study also examined the possibility of lime treatment for remediation of acid mine tailings and assumed to be 46 tones of pulverized lime for neutralization of the tailings.

  • Dismantling tests were performed to separate components from waste printed circuit boards (PCBs) using HCl solution with Sn4+. Then, the effects of agitation speed, reaction temperature, initial Sn4+ concentration, and HCl concentration on the dismantling of components were investigated. No significant effect on the dismantling speed was observed upon changing the agitation speed from 100 to 300 rpm. However, the dismantling rate increased with increasing reaction temperature, Sn4+ concentration, and HCl concentration. In the all-component dismantling tests, when the dismantling ratio increased to 100%, no solder was observed on the boards, and the Sn4+ concentration was ~1,500 mg/L. The dismantling ratio of the components from the PCB increased to 100% within 2 h when 1 mol/L HCl solution with 10,000 mg/L Sn4+ was used at an agitation speed and temperature of 200 rpm and 90 ℃, respectively.

  • ZrB2 powders were prepared from a mixture of ZrO2, B2O3 and Mg by self-propagating high temperature synthesis method. The combustion product was successfully obtained from a mixture of ZrO2:B2O3:Mg=1:2:8.5 molar ratio. By-product, MgO was effectively removed by leaching with 1M HCl solution at 9$0^{\circ}C$ for over 5hours. After leaching, the Mg content was 0.86~1.42 wt%, and the mean particle size was 4.72${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The addition of 7.5 wt%(14Ni:1.0C) as a sintering aid greatly densified ZrB2 bodies compared with that of only Ni. The ZrB2 sintered bodies containing 7.5 wt%(14Ni:1.0C) was 94.3% of the theoretical density. In this case, ZrB2 existed as a major phase and had a bend strength of 300 MPa and a vickers hardness of 2000 kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$.

  • To develop porous glass membranes used for a effective membrane-separation process, porous glasses and glass membranes were prepared from the sodium borosilicate parent glass by the phaseseparation technique and effects of heat-treatment and leaching conditions on their characteristics were investigated. The crack-free glass membranes could be fabricated from the 9.4 Na2-O-30.7 B2O3-59.2 SiO2-0.7 Al2O3(wt%) parent glass by heat-treatment at the lower temperature(550-570$^{\circ}C$) and for longer than 45 hrs for the phase separation, followed by leaching with 3N-HCl+60% ethylene glycol solution at 90$^{\circ}C$ over 25 hrs. Porous glasses prepared in this work showed large specific surface areas(400㎡/g) and narrow pore size distribution with the mean pore radius of 14${\AA}$ enough for the application as reverse osmosis membranes. The salt-rejection efficiency and product-flux of the glass membranes heat-treated at 570$^{\circ}C$ for 80 hrs were found to be 51.8% and 270cc/㎡. hr, respectively. This result suggests that the porous glass membranes fabricated in this study could be applied for the reverse osmosis process.

  • The sorption of metal ions with low-cost adsorbents plays an important role in sustainable development. In the present study, the efficacy of sugarcane bagasse, rain tree fruits (samaneasaman), banana stem and their mixtures, used as bio-sorbents, in the removal of Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution is evaluated. Batch studies are conducted, and residual ions were measured using Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP)-atomic spectrometer. Effect of pH, initial metal ion concentration, reaction time and adsorbent dosage are studied. The Pb(II) removal efficiency was observed to be 97.88%, 98.60% and 91.74% for rain tree fruits, banana stem and a mixture of adsorbents respectively. The highest Cu(II) ion removal was observed for sugarcane bagasse sorbent with an efficiency of 82.10% with a pH of 4.5 and a reaction time of 90 min. Finally, desorption studies were carried out to study the leaching potential of adsorbent, and it was found that the adsorbent is stable in water than the other leaching agents such as HCl, ammonium acetate, Sodium EDTA. Hence, these adsorbents can be effectively used for the removal of these heavy metals.

  • In this paper, we carried out separation of membrane and leaching of Pt and Ru using hydrochloric acid from MEA(membrane-electrode assembly) of fuel cell. In this method, these were separated from MEA of fuel cell using the distilled water, 10 vol.% butanol solution and 15 vol.% cationic surfactant(Koremul-LN-7) by dipping method without the dispersion of catalyst particles. And the leaching of Pt and Ru containing in the separated carbon paper catalysts has been studied by hydrochloric acid using $HNO_3$ or $H_2O_2$ as a oxidant. The leaching ratio of Pt and Ru were higher when $H_2O_2$ was used as a oxidant and the optimum conditions were obtained in 8M HCl, the amount of $H_2O_2$ 5M and 6 hours of leaching time at $90^{\circ}C$. In this condition, extraction of Pt and Ru were 98% and 71.5%, respectively.

  • Electro-generated chlorine leaching of waste printed circuit boards was investigated in hydrochloric acid solutions. Non-magnetic component of $0.6{\sim}1.2mm$ was prepared by grinding, magnetic separation, and sieving. The non-magnetic component of pulverized printed circuit board contained about 45% of metal component, in which copper was about 83.6%. The leaching rate of copper was greatly affected by current density and agitation speed. The leaching of copper up to 98% was achieved at $20mA/cm^2$, $50^{\circ}C$, 180 minutes, and 600 rpm in 1M HCl solutions. Increasing agitation and lowering current density enhanced utilization efficiency of electro-generated chlorine. Leaching of copper was suppressed at the initial stage, while the minor metal elements, such as aluminum, lead, and tin, were dominantly leached out.

  • Recovery of gallium and indium from waste light emitting diodes has been emphasized gradually owing to high content of gallium and indium. This study was established the recovery of gallium (Ga3+) and indium (In3+) from waste gallium nitride was contained in waste light-emitting diodes. The procedure was divided into the following steps; characteristic analysis, alkaline roasting, and leaching. In characteristic analysis part, the results were used as a theoretical basis for the acid leaching part, and the chemical composition of waste light emitting diodes is 70.32% Ga, 5.31% Si, 2.27% Al and 2.07% In. Secondly, with reduction of non-metallic components by alkaline roasting, gallium nitride was reacted into sodium gallium oxide, in this section, the optimal condition of alkaline roasting is that the furnace was soaked at 900℃ for 3 hours with mixing Na2CO3. Next, leaching of waste light emitting diodes was extremely important in the process of recovery of gallium and indium. The result of leaching efficiency was investigated on the optimal condition accounting for the acid agent, concentration of acid, the ratio of liquid and solid, and reaction time. The optimal condition of leaching procedures was carried out for 2.0M of HCl liquid-solid mass ratio of 30 ml/g in 32minutes at 25℃ and about 96.88% Ga and 96.61% In were leached.

  • Inconel 713C which of a commercial Ni super alloy have the composition of 70 % Ni, 12 % Cr, 6 % Al and 4 % Mo. Mo is very expensive and have some economic value to recover in the alloy. In this study, liquid-liquid exraction(solvent extraction and stripping) has been performed to separate Mo from the synthetic leaching solution of spent Inconel 713C alloy and prepare to Mo powder by dying, evaporation and heat treatment. The experiments were conducted by using synthetic leaching solution which was prepared $NaMoO_4$ $2H_2O$ by dissolved in distilled water. Alamine336 and Cyanex272 dissolved in kerosene were used as extractants. The extraction percentage of Mo by Alamine336 is 99 % in the condition of the range of pH 1 to 4 and 1 % of concentration of Alamine336. The stripping solutions are used by HCl, $H_2SO_4$ and $HNO_3$ solutions and the concentrations were controlled by distilled water. The concentrations of HCl, $H_2SO_4$ and $HNO_3$ as stripping solutions are increased, the stripping percentages of Mo are increased and the stripping percentage of Mo by $HNO_3$ is higher than other stripping solutions. After liquid-liquid extraction and heat treatment, $MoO_3$ powder which of the purity of 97.5 % was prepared.
