  • Several novel 1-[2-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl) ethyl]-1H-benzo[d][1,2,3]triazoles (3a-h) have been synthesized by the condensation of 1-[2-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)-ethyl]-1H-benzotriazole (2) and appropriate acid chlorides. 1-[2-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)-ethyl]-1H-benzotriazole (2) was synthesized by reacting 3-(1H-benzo[d][1,2,3]triazol-1-yl)propanenitrile with sodium azide and ammonium chloride in the presence of dimethylformamide. The synthesized compounds were characterized by IR and PMR analysis. The titled compounds were evaluated for their in vitro antibacterial and antifungal activity by the cup plate method and anticonvulsant activity evaluated by the maximal electroshock induced convulsion method in mice. All synthesized compounds exhibited moderate antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis and moderate antifungal activity against Candida albicans. Compounds 5-(2-(1 H-benzo[d][1,2,3]triazo-1-yl)ethyl)-1H-tetrazol-1-yl)(4-aminophenyl)methanone 3d and 5-(2-(1 H-benzo[d][1,2,3]triazo-1-yl)ethyl)-1H-tetrazol-1-yl)(2-aminophenyl)methanone 3e elicited excellent anticonvulsant activity.

  • The characteristics of cyanide decomposition in aqueous phase by hydrogen peroxide have been explored in an effort to develop a process to recycle waste water. The self-decomposition of $H_2O$$_2$at pH 10 or below was minimal even in 90 min., with keeping about 90% of $H_2O$$_2$undissociated. On the contrary, at pH 12 only 9% of it remained during the same time. In the presence of copper catalyst at 5 g Cu/L, complete decomposition of $H_2$O$_2$was accomplished at pH 12 even in a shorter time of 40 min. The volatility of free cyanide was decisively dependent on the solution pH: the majority of free cyanide was volatilized at pH 8 or below, however, only 10% of it was volatilized at pH 10 or above. In non-catalytic cyanide decomposition, the free cyanide removal was incomplete in 300 min. even in an excessive addition of $H_2$$O_2$at a $H_2$$O_2$/CN molar ratio of 4, with leaving behind about 8% of free cyanide. On the other hand, in the presence of copper catalyst at a Cu/CN molar ratio of 0.2, the free cyanide was mostly decomposed in only 16 min. at a reducedH202/CN molar ratio of 2. Ihe efnciency of HBO2 in cyanide decomposition decreased with increasing addition of H2O2 since the seu-decomposition rate of $H_2$$O_2$increased. At the optimum $H_2$$O_2$/mo1ar ratio 0.2 of and Cu/CN molar ratio of 0.05, the free cyanide could be completely decomposed in 70 min., having a self-decomposition rate of 22 mM/min and a H$_2$$O_2$ efficiency of 57%.

  • The reactions of hydrated $CdCl_2$, $MnCl_2$, and $NiCl_2$ with 2,2'-bipyidine-3,3',6,6'-tetracarboxylic acid ($H_4bptc$) afforded the mononuclear [$Cd^{II}(H_2bptc)(H_2O)_3]{\cdot}H_2O$ (1), linear $\{[Cd(H_2bptc)(H_2O)]{\cdot}3H_2O\}_n$ (2), 3-D heterobimetallic $[NaCd(Hbptc)(H_2O)]$ (3), layer $[Mn(H_2bptc)(H_2O)]_n$ (4) and a dinuclear compound $[Ni_2(H_2bptc)-(H_2O)_2]{\cdot}6H_2O$ (5). These compounds have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR, and their structures have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The thermal stabilities of 1-3 were measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and their solid state luminescence properties together with the free ligand $H_4bptc$ were investigated at room temperature.

  • B-doped hydrogenated amorphous silicon carbide (a-SiC:H) thin films were prepared by plasma-enhanced chemical-vapor deposition in a gas mixture of $SiH_4, CH_4,\;and\; B_2H_6$. Physical and chemical properties of a-SiC:H films grown with varing the ratio of $B_2H_6/(SiH_4+CH_4)$ were characterized with various analysis methods including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS), UV absorption CH_4spectroscopy and electrical conductivity measurements. With the B-doping concentration, the doping efficiency and the micro-crystallinity were decreased and the film became amorphous when $B_2H_6/(SiH_4{plus}CH_4)$ was over $5{\times}10^{-3}$. The addition of $B_2H_6$ gas during deposition decreased the H content in the film by lowering the quantity of Si-C-H bonds. Consequently, the optical band gap and the activation energy of a-SiC:H films were decreased with increasing the B-doping level.

  • Isotopic experiments using $H_2O^{18}$ on the oxidation of V(III) in acid perchlorate by molecular oxygen were performed in the range pH 1.0 to 3.0. At pH < 2, where a rate equation of the form TEX>$ -\frac{d[V(III)]}{dt}=k_1\frac{[O_2][V(III)]}{[H^+]}$ is adequate, the tracer study clearly indicated that all the product vanadyl ion's ($VO^{2+}$) oxygen originated from the molecular oxygen. At pH > ~2, where a different rate expression of the form $-\frac{d[V(III)]}{dt}=K_2\frac{[O_2][V(III)]^2}{[Ht]^2}$is required, the isotopic experiment showed that half the vanadyl oxygen originated from the molecular oxygen. Considering the results of the isotopic study, a mechanism for the V(Ⅲ)-O2 reaction at pH < ~2, may be suggested as follows: The tracer results at pH > ~2 imply that the rate determining step may be $$ V_2(OH)_2^{4+} + O_2 \rightarrow 2VO^{2+} + H_2O_2$$ followed by $$V_2(OH)_2^{4+} + H_2O_2 \rightarrow 2VO^{2+} + 2H_2O$$ after establishing the equilibria V^{3+} + H_2O \leftrightarrow VOH^{2+} + H^+, and 2VOH^{2+}\leftrightarrow V_2(OH)_2^{4+}$$

  • In this paper, we consider two functional equations: (1) h(𝓕(x, y, z) + 2x + y + z) + h(xy + z) + yh(x) + yh(z) = h(𝓕(x, y, z) + 2x + y) + h(xy) + yh(x + z) + 2h(z), (2) h(𝓕(x, y, z) - y + z + 2e) + 2h(x + y) + h(xy + z) + yh(x) + yh(z) = h(𝓕(x, y, z) - y + 2e) + 2h(x + y + z) + h(xy) + yh(x + z), without any regularity assumption for all x, y, z in a unital algebra A, where 𝓕 : A3 → A is defined by 𝓕(x, y, z) := h(x + y + z) - h(x + y) - h(z) for all x, y, z ∈ A. Also, we find general solutions of these equations in unital algebras. Finally, we prove the Hyers-Ulam stability of (1) and (2) in unital Banach algebras.

  • PTMSP/LDH composite membranes were prepared by adding 0, 1, 3, and 5 wt% LDH contents to PTMSP. The gas permeability and selectivity for $H_2$, $N_2$, $CH_4$, $C_3H_8$, $n-C_4H_{10}$ were investigated as a function of LDH content. As LDH content of PTMSP/LDH composite membranes increased to 5 wt%, the gas permeability for $H_2$ and $N_2$ gradually decreased, while $n-C_4H_{10}$ permeability rapidly increased. The gas permeability for $CH_4$ and $C_3H_8$ was found to decrease for the membranes with LDH content range of 0~3 wt%, however increase in the range of 3~5 wt%. As LDH content of PTMSP/LDH composite membranes increased to 5 wt%, the selectivity of membranes gradually increased for $H_2$, $N_2$, $CH_4$, $C_3H_8$, $n-C_4H_{10}$ over $H_2$, $N_2$. However the selectivity for $C_3H_8$ and $n-C_4H_{10}$ over $CH_4$ increased in the range of LDH content 0~3 wt% but decreased in the range of 3~5 wt%. The $CH_4$ and $n-C_4H_{10}$ selectivity over $H_2$ and $N_2$ increased as $CH_4$ and $n-C_4H_{10}$ permeability increased. The $n-C_4H_{10}$ selectivity over $CH_4$ increased with increasing $n-C_4H_{10}$ permeability up to 182,000 barrer and decreased above 182,000 barrer of $n-C_4H_{10}$ permeability. The $C_3H_8$ selectivity over $H_2$ and $N_2$ was found to decrease as the $C_3H_8$ permeability increased from 46,000 to 50,000 barrer, but to increase with increasing permeability from 50,000 to 52,300 barrer and decrease again with increasing permeability from 52,300 to 60,000 barrer. The $C_3H_8$ selectivity over $CH_4$ was found to decrease with increasing $C_3H_8$ permeability up to 52,300 barrer but increase above 52,300 barrer.

  • The mechanism of stomatal closing in response to $O_2$ was indirectly investigated by using $H_2O_2$ which is the intermediate product of $O_2$ metabolites. Stomata in epidermal strips close in response to $H_2O_2$. The effect of $H_2O_2$ on stomatal closing was dependent on the concentration of $H_2O_2$. 10 ppm $H_2O_2$ showed a clear effect on stomatal closing and 1000 ppm $H_2O_2$ induced complete stomatal closing after the treatment of 3 hours. Stomatal closing by $H_2O_2$ in intact leaf was also observed by measuring the diffusion resistance with porometer. It was found that the stomatal closing by $H_2O_2$ was not mediated by $Ca^{2+}$, and that was a different result observed in stomatal closing by water stress. Reversely, $Ca^{2+}$ showed a great inhibition on stomatal closing. The leakage of K+ in epidermal strips was doubled in response to $H_2O_2$ when it was campared to the control. 10 ppm $H_2O_2$ decreased photosynthetic activity. Fv/Fm representing the activity of Photosystem II was reduced about 4 % in 10 ppm $H_2O_2$ and 8 % in 100 ppm $H_2O_2$ In the treatment of 1.5 hour. However, stomatal closing by 10 ppm $H_2O_2$ was reduced about 56 %. According1y, it can be suggested that stomatal closing by $H_2O_2$ is related with the decrease of photosynthetic activity, but it was chiefly induced by the change of the membrane permeability. Key words Commelina communis, stomatal closing, $H_2O_2$, $Ca^{2+}$, photosynthesis.

  • Suppressor of Variegation 3-9 Homolog 2 (SUV39H2) methylates the lysine 9 residue of histone H3 and induces heterochromatin formation, resulting in transcriptional repression or silencing of target genes. SUV39H1 and SUV39H2 have a role in embryonic development, and SUV39H1 was shown to suppress cell cycle progression associated with Rb. However, the function of human SUV39H2 has not been extensively studied. We observed that forced expression of SUV39H2 decreased cell proliferation by inducing $G_1$ cell cycle arrest. In addition, SUV39H2 was degraded through the ubiquitin-proteasomal pathway. Using yeast two-hybrid screening to address the degradation mechanism and function of SUV39H2, we identified translationally controlled tumor protein (TCTP) as an SUV39H2-interacting molecule. Mapping of the interacting regions indicated that the N-terminal 60 amino acids (aa) of full-length SUV39H2 and the C-terminus of TCTP (120-172 aa) were critical for binding. The interaction of SUV39H2 and TCTP was further confirmed by co-immunoprecipitation and immunofluorescence staining for colocalization. Moreover, depletion of TCTP by RNAi led to up-regulation of SUV39H2 protein, while TCTP overexpression reduced SUV39H2 protein level. The half-life of SUV39H2 protein was significantly extended upon TCTP depletion. These results clearly indicate that TCTP negatively regulates the expression of SUV39H2 post-translationally. Furthermore, SUV39H2 induced apoptotic cell death in TCTP-knockdown cells. Taken together, we identified SUV39H2, as a novel target protein of TCTP and demonstrated that SUV39H2 regulates cell proliferation of lung cancer cells.
