DNA computing has been applied to the problem of getting an optimal solution since Adleman's experiment. DNA computing uses strings with various length and four-type bases that makes more useful for finding a global optimal solutions of the complex multi-modal problems. This paper presents DNA coding method for finding optimal solution of the multi-modal function and compares the efficiency of this method with the genetic algorithms (GA). GA searches effectively an optimal solution via the artificial evolution of individual group of binary string and DNA coding method uses a tool of calculation or Information store with DNA molecules and four-type bases denoted by the symbols of A(Ademine), C(Cytosine), G(Guanine) and T(Thymine). The same operators, selection, crossover, mutation, are applied to the both DNA coding algorithm and genetic algorithms. The results show that the DNA based algorithm performs better than GA.

We use principal component analysis (PCA) to identify exons of a gene and further analyze their internal structures. The PCA is conducted on the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) based on the 64 codon sequences and the 4 nucleotide sequences. By comparing to independent component analysis (ICA), we can differentiate between the exon and intron regions, and how they are correlated in terms of the square magnitudes of STFTs. The experiment is done on the gene F56F11.4 in the chromosome III of C. elegans. For this data, the nucleotide based PCA identifies the exon and intron regions clearly. The codon based PCA reveals a weak internal structure in some exon regions, but not the others. The result of ICA shows that the nucleotides thymine (T) and guanine (G) have almost all the information of the exon and intron regions for this data. We hypothesize the existence of complex exon structures that deserve more detailed analysis.
Sulfate-reducing bacteria have been isolated from soil and their abilities to degrade dibenzothiophene (DBT) were compared with those of type cultures. Among the strains tested a soil isolate M6 showed the highest ability to degrade DBT. Isolate M6 was characterized as a mesophilic obligatory anaerobe. The morphology of the bacterium was vibrioid with the size of $0.4-0.7{\;}\mu\textrm{m}{\;}by{\;}1.0-1.5{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$. Gram reaction was negative and nonsporulating. Desulfoviridin is present. Lactate, pyruvate, ethanol and malate supported growth of the bacterium in the presence of sulfate. Sulfate, sulfite, thiosulfate and sulfur served as electron acceptors for growth. Hydrogenase was present. The mol% of guanine and cytosine of DNA was determined as 56%. The bacterium produced viscous material. From these results, the isolate M6 was identified as Desulfovibrio desulfuricans.
Tumor metastasis remains the principal cause of treatment failure and poor prognosis in patients with colorectal cancer. It is a multistage process which includes proteolysis, motility and migration of cells, proliferation in a new site, and neoangiogenesis. A crucial step in the process of intra- and extra-vasation is the activation of proteolytic enzymes capable of degrading the extracellular matrix (ECM). In this stage, urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are necessary. Micrometastases need the presence of growth factor and vascular growth factor so that they can form macrometastasis. In addition, cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) and guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs) play important roles in the progression of colorectal cancer and metastatic migration. Further elucidation of the mechanisms of how these molecules contribute will aid in the identification of diagnostic and prognostic markers as well as therapeutic targets for patients with colorectal metastasis.
- The further study for the identification of the previously reported pink-pigmented facultative methylotrophic bacterium (PPFM) GL-10 was carried out. The PPFM GL-10 was Gram nagative, rod, and motile by a single polarly inserted flagellum. The colonies were smooth, pink, circular, along with convex with entire margin. The isolate could utilize C1 compounds and a variety of multicarbon substrates as sole carbon and energy source. The isolate was obligately aerobic, and exhibited both catalase and oxidase activities. The deoxyribonucleic acid base composition was 65-67 mol% guanine plus cytosine. The isolate was mostly identical with Methylobacterium extorquens and named Methylobacterium sp. strain GL-10. Methylobacterium GL-10 accumulated a copolyester of 3-hydroxybutyrate and 3-hydroxyvalerate (poly-3HB/3 HV) when grown in nitrogen-free culture media containing sodium propionate as substrate at the second polyester accumulation stage. The composition of copolyester, as determined from $^1h$ NMR spectra, was 23 mol% of 3-hydroxyvalerate (3HV).
Bipyridine and its derivatives have been widely used as the ligands in transition metal complexes. The proton affinities of pyridine derivatives were calculated using an ab initio quantum mechanical method (B3LYP with various double zeta and triple zeta basis sets) in combination with the Poisson-Boltzmann continuum solvation model. Van der Waals radii of the atoms in the heterocyclic rings for the solvation energy calculation were set to values determined to reproduce the $pK_a$ values of guanine and oxoguanine derivatives and that of chlorine was optimized to reproduce the experimental values of relating compounds. The $pK_a$ values for the heterocyclic ring compounds were in agreement with the experimental values with a mean unsigned error of 0.45 $pK_a$ units.

The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of the water extract of the puffer fish Fugu xanthopterus(FXH) on the alcohol induced hyperuricemia. The normal group and the FXH treated group showed no sigbificant changes in the levels of blood uric acid but, the blood uric acid significantly decreased in the FXh treated rats with 100mg/kg for two weeks compared to the ethanol treated group. There were no significant changes in the activities of uricase, adenosine deaminase, guanine deaminase, and purine uncleoside phosphorylase, among all the test group. But the activitis of liver xanthine oxidase were recovered to the normal level in ethanol +FXH treated group comparing to the ethanol treated group. Furthermore, ethanol+FXH treated rats showed the similar pattern in the levels of blood uric acid and urinary allantoin with normal group. These results indicate that the decreased blood uric acid by the FXH treatment of the alcohol induced hyperuricemia rats may result from decreased activity of hepatic xanthine oxidase.
A rapid and accurate method is described for the determination of nucleo-bases in rumen micro-organisms. A procedure to satisfactorily hydrolyse the micro-organisms involving reaction with a mixture of readily volatile organic acids (acetic and formic acids) under high pressure, is proposed, and optimal conditions for an analytical procedure with reversed phase HPLC is described. The following nucleobases contents (mmol/kg DM) of rumen micro-organisms were found: Adenine (Ade), 82.62; Guanine (Gua), 61.34; Cytosine (Cyt), 84.61; Thymine (Thy), 35.74; Uracil (Ura), 68.62; Hypoxanthine (Hxn), 13.06; Xanthine (Xn), 8.35. Total purine-N content (g/kg N) of rumen micro-organisms were 99.60. The nucleic acid N content (g/kg N) of microbial isolates were: RNA-N, 109.9; DNA-N, 50.9.

Carrying out first-principles calculations, we study N-doped capped carbon nanotube (CNT) electrodes applied to DNA sequencing. While we obtain for the face-on nucleobase junction configurations a conventional conductance ordering where the largest signal results from guanine according to its high highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level, we extract for the edge-on counterparts a distinct conductance ordering where the low-HOMO thymine provides the largest signal. The edge-on mode is shown to operate based on a novel molecular sensing mechanism that reflects the chemical connectivity between N-doped CNT caps that can act both as electron donors and electron acceptors and DNA functional groups that include the hyperconjugated thymine methyl group[1].
MonA is a subunit of a guanine nucleotide exchange factor that is important for vacuole passing and autophagy processes in eukaryotes. In this study, we characterized the function of MonA, an orthologue of Saccharomyces cerevisiae Mon1, in the model fungus Aspergillus nidulans and a toxigenic fungus A. flavus. In A. nidulans, the absence of AnimonA led to decreased fungal growth, reduced asexual reproduction, and defective cleistothecia production. In addition, AnimonA deletion mutants exhibited decreased spore viability, had reduced trehalose contents in conidia, and were sensitive to thermal stress. In A. flavus, deletion of AflmonA caused decreased fungal growth and defective production of asexual spores and sclerotia structures. Moreover, the absence of monA affected vacuole morphology in both species. Taken together, these results indicate that MonA plays conserved roles in controlling fungal growth, development and vacuole morphology in A. nidulans and A. flavus.
