  • This study was conducted to find out the basic informations related to the rice cultivation using the infant seedlings. Infant seedlings with different nursery Periods were compared for the growth and grain yield of rice at the National Crop Experiment Station in 1997. The highest sound seedling ratio of 93.9% was observed in 8-day old seedling, followed by 88.9% of 12-day, 82.0% of 16-day, and 80.8% of 20-day, The endosperm remained 52.5% in the 8-day old seedling at transplanting and decreasingly with increasing nursery period. Missing hills at transplanting were more in 16-day and 20-day old seedling than in 8-day and 12-day old seedlings, 5.1-5.2% in 8-day and 12-day growing seedling, 6.7% in 16-day and 7.8% in 20-day old seedling. Rooting ability was observed highest in 8-day, followed by 12-day, 16-day and 20-day old seedling. The milled rice was lower by 5-16% in 12-day, 16-day and 20-day old seedling than in 8-day old seedling of 6.18 t/ha. It was found that the 8-day and 12-day old seedling provided more advantage for sound seedling ratio, endosperm remaining, missing hill during transplanting, rooting ability and grain yields than 16-day and 20-day old seedlings.

  • Purpose: This study was done to investigate the effects of an infant massage on physical growth and stress response in preterm babies. Method: A nonequivalent control group with pre-posttest design was used with 56 preterm babies in the NICU of E medical center at Daejeon. Data were collected from July 2004 to May 2005. The intervention was given for 15 minutes, once a day for 7 days. Physical growth was measured by weight, length, head circumference, and stress response was measured by serum cortisol level. Mean, %, paired-test, t-test with the SPSS/W in 16.0 program were used to analyze the data. Results: After the intervention, physical growth variables (weight, length, head circumference) in experimental group were higher than that of the control group. Also, the serum cortisol level in the experimental group was lower than that of the control group. But none of these results were not statistically significant. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that a 7-day intervention period may not be long enough to confirm the effects of infant massage on physical growth and stress reaction. Therefore it is suggested that a longer period of infant massage should be tested to determine if it is effective in improving the physical growth and stress reduction in preterm babies.

  • Growth and development of a plant over a growing season is closely related to the daily accumulation of heat. Heat unit measured by accumulated growing degree days (GDD) is becoming increasingly popular to estimate the growth of a plant or even in insect. GDD or heat accumulation per day is measured by calculating average daily temperature and then subtracting the base temperature below which growth does not occur. Heat accumulation per day is added for the desired period and accumulated GDD is determined. The present study was conducted in five seasons in an established garden with K-2, S-36 and V-1 mulberry varieties belonging to Morus indica L. grown under completely irrigated condition at the farm of CSRTI, Mysore during 2001 - 2002. Plants were pruned in each season and the growth of the plant measured by total shoot length and fresh leaf yield was recorded at an interval of 5 days starting from 30 days of pruning (DAP) to 70 days when all the plants were pruned. The accumulated GDD for the corresponding days were recorded and used for analysis. Accumulated growing degree days (GDD) have been found to be perfectly correlated with both growth and yield in all the seasons in all the varieties studied. The high $R^2$ values indicated a strong relationship between the accumulated GDD and, growth and yield of mulberry.

  • Batch growth of plant cell suspension cultures of Thalictrum rugosum was studied to clarify the kinetic behaviors. It was found that the product formation was growth associated. The specific growth rate was $0.20-0.25\;day\;^{-1}$/TEX> at the growth phase and the FW/DCW ratio was an interesting parameter which represented the status of the cells or the status of sugar concentration. The cell yield was 0.36 g cells/g sugar. The maximum berberine level was 139 mg/L of which 120 mg/L was intracellular. In terms of the specific content of berberine, the product was 1.10% of dry cell weight. At the growth phase, the relationship between the specific growth rate and sugar concentration was described well by Monod kinetics.

  • Age and growth in length of anchovy juveniles were analysed from the samples collected from the coastal waters of Chonnam, Korea, in 1988 and 1989. Ages in days were determined by counting growth increments in otolith from 248 individuals. Growth in length versus age in days was well represented by Gompertz curve: $$L =5.76{\times}E xp(1.66 \times(1- E xp(-0.44\;t)))$$, or $$L=3.7{\times}E xp(1.99\times(1-E xp(-0.0614\;t)))$$. The mean growth rate was 0.38 mm/day from 20 days to 40 days. Growth rate was maximum at 10 days, and then decreased gradually. The growth of anchovy juvenile were nearly constant inspite of the sampling dates or stations.

  • The effect of fetal number (single or twin) on plasma concentrations of progesterone, estradiol $17{\beta}$, cortisol, prolactin, growth hormone, triiodothyronine, thyroxine and insulin around parturition (periparturient period) were studied on ten $Alpine{\times}Beetle$ crossbred goats in their first to third lactation. The hormone profiles were studied on days -20, -15, -10, -5, -4, -3, -2, -1 prior to kidding and on day 0 and +1, +2, +3, +4, +5, +10, +15, +20 days postkidding. Plasma progesterone levels were significantly (p<0.01) higher in twin bearing goats comparison to single bearing goats during all the days of sampling. The decline in progesterone concentration from day 20 to day 1 before kidding was 56% in twin and 42% in single bearing goats. In single bearing goats plasma estradiol $17{\beta}$ was significantly (p<0.01) higher during prekidding days compared to twin bearing goats. The level of estradiol $17{\beta}$ was highest on the day of kidding in both the groups. The plasma prolactin level in twin bearing goats from day 10 to day 1 prepartum was higher as compared to single fetus bearing goats. However there was abrupt increase in prolactin level on the day of kidding in both the groups. The plasma growth hormone levels were significantly (p<0.01) higher in twin compared to single bearing goats. On the day of kidding growth hormone levels were significantly (p<0.01) higher in twin as compared to single bearing goats (1.40 vs. 0.95 ng/ml). In twin bearing goats plasma cortisol values from day 5 till the day of kidding remained elevated and the levels on the day of kidding was significantly highest in both the groups. The levels of triiodothyronine ($T_3$) were significantly higher (p<0.01) during all the periods of sampling in single compared to twin bearing goats. Plasma thyroxine ($T_4$) was significantly (p<0.01) lower in twin compared to single bearing goats. In single bearing goats plasma insulin levels were significantly (p<0.01) higher than twin bearing goats during prepartum period however during post partum period the levels in both the groups remained similar. It can be concluded that number of fetuses is having significant influence on the hormone profile during periparturient period.

  • During a 35-day growth cycle, N, P, and K uptake was determined by measuring changes in their contents in culture solutions. At harvest, plants were separated into the roots, base organs and shoot, and dried for tissue analysis for N, P, and K. The uptake rates of N, P, and K followed cyclical patterns that was related to shoot development and harvest, but were independent of the transpiration rate. Uptake of N declined from 5.6 mmol $plant^{-1}$ $day^{-1}$ just prior to the cycle initiation to 4.0 mmol $plant^{-1}$ $day^{-1}$ at day 15. Uptake rate steadily increased as flower stems reached maturity up to 10.3 mmol $plant^{-1}$ $day^{-1}$ day 35. Uptakes rates of P and K followed similar patterns of N uptake. Tissue concentrations of N and P steadily decreased since day 15. Content of K was the lowest at day 20 and steadily increased thereafter. In the root tissue, N and K contents were the lowest at day 15, increased to day 30, and then decreased at day 35. Tissue P content was just a reverse of those of N and K.

  • Two trials were conducted to study the effects of two Chinese herbal polysaccharides, Astragalus polysaccharides (APS) and Achyranthes bidentata polysaccharides (ABPS), and one Chinese herbal saponin, Acantbepanax senticosus saponin (ASS), on the immunity and growth performance of weaned pigs. Experiment 1 was a 14-day growth assay, in which 32 weaned pigs were randomly allocated to one of four dietary treatments: i) 0.05% talcum powder control; ii) 0.05% APS; iii) 0.05% mixture of APS and ASS in a 1:1 ratio by weight; and iv) 0.05% mixture of APS, ASS, and ABPS in a ratio of 1:1:1 by weight. Blood samples were collected on day 14 to determine plasma parameters. Feed intake, body weight gain, and feed efficiency were also determined. Experiment 2 was a 21-day immunity assay, in which 16 weaned pigs were randomly allotted to one of two dietary treatments: i) 0.05% talcum powder control; and ii) 0.05% mixture of APS and ASS in a 1:1 ratio by weight. On day 21, pigs were challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and 3 h later blood samples were collected and analyzed for lymphocyte proliferation as well as interleukin 6 (IL-6), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), growth hormone (GH), and cortisol levels. In Experiment 1, feeding Chinese herbal polysaccharides and saponin increased growth performance of the pigs. The effects of the mixture of APS and ASS were especially notable, as there was a significant improvement in growth performance compared with the control (p<0.05). The plasma concentration of immunoglobulin G (IgG), nitric oxide (NO), and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) were increased in all treatments groups, with the mixture of APS and ASS increasing the level of IgG and NOS significantly (p<0.05), compared with the control. There was no difference in the NO level between the control and treatment groups (p>0.05). In Experiment 2, Chinese herbal polysaccharides and saponin showed immunostimulating effects. The level of cortisol, GH, and IGF-I were significantly increased (p>0.05), and the level of IL-6 showed a significant decrease (p<0.05) in the APS and ASS treatment after the LPS challenge. The mixture of APS and ASS could stimulate the blood lymphocyte proliferation significantly whether the LPS was injected or not (p<0.05). These results show that Chinese herbal extracts can improve growth performance and stimulate immunity of weaned pigs. A mixture of APS and ASS, compared with APS alone, could be a new kind of immunostimulant for weaned pigs, which could result in greater positive effects on their growth performance and immunity.

  • The effect of long day treatment on the growth and flower bud differentiation of persimmon tree grown in a heated plastic house was investigated. The rate of leaf sprout was 65% in the long day treatment and 71% in natural day (control). In the long day, the shoot grew 16.7 cm longer, full bloom and harvest days were shorter, fruit weight was 16% lighter, and the sweetness and firmness of fruit were lower. The photosynthesis rate in the long day treatment was higher, showing the tendency of increasing with time. However, the rate of photosynthesis increased after 1600 hours showed higher than the control. Carbohydrate accumulation in the shoot was decreased, with higher nitrogen content and lower C/N ratio in the long day. The number of flower primordia per bud was less, and the days for differentiation was longer in the long day.

  • The role of endogenous somatostatin on lactation in rats was examined by passive immuno-neutralization of Wistar rats. In one study, the rats were given either immunoglobulin raised in sheep against somatostatin, or non-specific sheep immunoglobulins by daily s.c. injection from parturition through the first two weeks of lactation. The growth of the pups was recorded by weighting every second day, and the milk yield calculated from the pup weight and weight gain. Immunoneutralization of maternal somatostatin during pregnancy had a slight effect (p < 0.05) on the mean birth weight of the pups but no subsequent effect on postnatal growth rate of the pups or milk yield ($25.32{\pm}0.88g/day$) compared with young control rats given normal sheep serum ($25.55{\pm}1.04g/day$). Similarly, passive immunization against somatostatin during lactation ($21.96{\pm}1.57g/day$) also did not affect milk yields compared with controls ($24.85{\pm}1.03g/day$). These data do not support a significant role for endogenous somatostatin in regulating milk production in lactating rats.
