  • Estimation of shield TBM tunnelling-induced volume loss is of great importance for ground settlement control. This study proposed a simple method for evaluation of volume loss during TBM tunnlling, which is able to take into account of shield machine configurations and main driving data in calculation. The method was applied to analyze the tunnelling cases with earth pressure balanced and slurry pressure balanced shiled TBM, and mostly, reasonable agreements with monitoring results were found. Additional discussions were made for some disagreements.

  • Based on the proven feasibility of bottom ash and tire shred-soil mixtures as lightweight fill materials, tire shred-bottom ash mixtures were suggested as a new lightweight fill material to replace the conventional construction material with bottom ash. Therefore, we carried out the laboratory test, field compaction test and performance test of large scale embankment in order to evaluate their suitability for the use of lightweight fill materials in the before studies. We could verified that the ash, tire-shred and the mixture are able to be the useful materials as light fill materials. In this study, we built real scale embankment with RBA(Reclamated Bottom Ash), TRBA(Tire shred-Reclamated Bottom Ash mixture), WS(Weathered Soil), BA(Bottom Ash screened by 5mm sieve) for monitoring the behavior such as settlement, lateral displacement and water content change. Furthermore, we are examining the ground water quality in the surrounding area of the test embankment.

  • Application of anchored or strutted wall system for the earth retention of excavation works in a populated urban area or a poor soil deposit can be limited due to various restrictions. Since the strut becomes longer in a wide excavation site, the stability of an earth retaining wall is decreased, the wall deformation is increased, and the ground settlement is also increased due to an increased buckling or bending deformation of struts. Especially, in a populated urban area, the installation of anchors can be problematic due to the property line of adjacent structures or facilities. Thus, a new concept of earth retaining system like Self-Supported diaphragm Wall can solve several problems expected to occur during excavation in the urban area. In this study, Numerical analyses of counterfort diaphragm wall was introduced and the monitored data from the site was compared with the original results of numerical analyses. Also, in the case of the deep excavation applied the counterfort diaphragm wall, numerical analyses was performed to predict the wall deformation and the reinforcement to reduce the wall deformation was suggested.

  • This study compared the degree of consolidation by hyperbolic, curve fitting , Asaoka's and methods using values measured with a theoretical curve in consideration of smear effect and well resistance. The degree of consolidation by the Hyperboilc method was underestimated than the degree of consolidation by Curve fitting. Asaoka's , and Monden's methods. The typical range of the coefficient of horizontal consolidation was Ch=(2-3)Cv in the case considering smear effect and well resistance, and Ch =(0.5-2.1) Cv in the case disregarding smear effect and well resistance. The degree of consolidation obtained by ground settlement monitoring was nearly the same value when the coefficient of smear zone permeability by back analysis was shown to be half that of in-situ and the diameter of the smear zone was shown to be double that of mandrel. By increasing the diameter reduction ratio of the drain, the time of consolidation was delayed. The effect of well resistance showed that the case of a small coefficient of permeability was much more than in the case of a large coefficient of permeability . It was recommended that when designing diameter reduction of a drain, well resistance should be considered.

  • Recently, National interest has been rising due to earthquakes in Gyeongju and Pohang, disasters caused by landslides, landslides, and sinkholes around construction sites, and damage caused by disasters. SAR is able to detect ground displacement in mm for wide area, collect data through satellite, predict timeliness of crustal change by time series analysis, and reduce disaster and disaster damage. The purpose of this study is to investigate the latest SAR interference analysis technique (SqueeSAR analysis technique) of Sentinel-1A satellite (SAR sensor) of European ESA for about 3 years by selecting the 1st landfill site in the metropolitan area in Incheon, The settlement amount was calculated in a time series. Especially, in order to examine the accuracy of the subsidence and subsidence tendency by the SqueeSAR analysis method, the ground level survey was compared and analyzed for the first time in Korea. Also, the tendency of the subsidence trend was predicted by analyzing the time series and correlation trend of the subsidence for three years. Through this study, it is expected that disaster prevention and disaster prevention such as sinkhole and landslide can be utilized from time series monitoring of crustal variation of the land.

  • This study was performed to suggest a rational method for the stability evaluation of agricultural reservoir in the very soft ground. The stability methods for agricultural reservoir was used to compare and analyze with various condition by limit equilibrium method. The behavior of settlement-displacement obtained by field monitoring system was used to compare and analyze with various stability methods, and to investigate the applicability of the methods for stability evaluation of agricultural reservoir. The horizontal displacement was abruptly increased when physical properties of soft clay reached its maximum values and therefore, the values of these properties could be used to the fundamental data for stability evaluation. The evaluation of the stability of agricultural reservoir was suggested to use the inclination of curve rather than critical line.

  • In order to intuitively grasp the earth pressure direction acting on the structure and displacement state, displacement data in the horizontal and vertical directions were processed using the sigmoid function. A displacement coordinate system was set up for each axis. The system can intuitively check the current displacement and assess the management stage of each point. A displacement path can be compiled from continuously recorded points, allowing trends in the displacement's history and stress direction to be known. Analysis of data measured for excavated ground, found that displacement occurred in the direction of destressing at all points, and that the points' management state steady. Similar behavior trends were found among measurement points with high spatial correlation, whereas differing behavior trends occurred among measurement points with low spatial correlation. If the correlation analysis of the precursor and behavior area is performed using the continuously distributed surface settlement data and displacement coordinate system, it will be possible to predict the failure time and area.

  • The field tests were performed to suggest the rational method for stability evaluation of soft clay. The behavior of settlement-displacement obtained by field monitoring system was to compare and analyze the results of the observationed method, and to investigate the complex behavior of soft clay with filling height. The results of this study are summarized as follows. 1. The horizontal displacement was suddenly increased when physical properties of soft clay showed maximum values and the part of the turning point. The values of these properties were available to the fundamental data for stability evaluation. The shear deformation appeared that difference of the horizontal displacement was maximum values. 2. Although the stability of embankment by step filling showed the unstable part over the failure standard line, the embankment was confirmed stable. So the evaluation of the stability of embankment is reasonable to use the inclination of curve than failure standard line. 3. The horizontal displacement and relative settlement were increased as same ratio at improvement ground. Estimation of shear deformation using Terzaghi's modified bearing capacity should consider the relations of embankment load and undrained shear strength at nonimprovement ground, and minimum safety factor is recommended to use larger than 1.2. 4. Excess pore water pressure was increased with increasing of filling height and decreased with maintain the filling height. The embankment was unstable when filling height was exceed the evaluation standard line, and the behavior of excess pore water pressure and horizontal displacement could use as a standard of judgement of the filling velocity control because their behavior were agree with each other.

  • To investigate the characteristics of shear strength and soil deformation in soft grounds, in which various vertical drains were placed, two hundreds field monitoring data of embankments performed in thirteen road construction sites at west and south coastal areas of the Korean Peninsula were collected. At first, the relationship between settlement and lateral displacement was investigated into three stages, in which embankment construction works were divided into initial filling stage, final filling stage and stage after complete filling. And then, the relationship of surcharge pressures and embankment heights with undrained shear strength of soft grounds were investigated. The investigation on settlement and lateral displacement illustrated that the increment of lateral flow to the increment of settlement was low during initial filling stage, but increased gradually with filling and showed largest during final filling stage. After complete filling, the lateral displacement was converged, even though the settlement was increased continuously. Therefore, most of lateral flow was occurred during embankment filling. The ratio of the lateral displacement increment to the settlement increment was 20% for initial filling stage, which coincided with the one presented by Tavenas et al.(1979), but became 50% for final filling stage, which was half of the one presented by Tavenas et al.(1979). However, the ratio reduced to 1% to 9%, which was quite lower than the one presented by Tavenas et al.(1979). Shear deformations, even shear failures, were predicted in soft grounds under initial undrained shear strength, since the design heights of embankments were higher than the yield height in all the sites. However, embankment construction would be possible since the yield height became higher than the design height due to improvement of shear strength of soft grounds with application of the vertical drains. In order to perform safely embankments for road constructions, the embankment loads should be designed not to be exceed 5.14 times the initial undrained shear strength of soft grounds and to be less than 3.0 times the undrained shear strength improved with application of vertical drains in soft grounds.
