In DC power distribution system for urban rail transits potential relay, 64P, is used to detect the ground faults. The problem with this 64P is that though it detects the ground fault it cannot identify the faulted region. Therefore the faulted region cannot be isolated properly. It could results in power loss of the trains on the healthy regions and the safety of the passengers in the trains could be affected adversely. A new ground fault protective relaying scheme that can identify the faulted region is presented in this paper. The new concept uses the current differential scheme and the permissive scheme to identify the faulted region correctly. A device with similar characteristic to the arrestor is adapted to use the current relay for the ground fault detection. The role of the device is to block the ground leakage current in normal operating condition and enable the ground fault current to flow in ground fault condition. The algorithm of the new relay and the effect of the newly adapted device in the new relaying scheme are discussed.
To study the influences of tunneling on the earth pressure and ground settlement when the tunnel passes through the adjacent underground retaining structure, 30 two-dimensional model tests were carried out taking into account the ratios of tunnel excavation depth (H) to lateral width (w), excavation width (B), and excavation distance using a custom-made test device and an analogical soil. Tunnel crossing adjacent existing retaining structure (TCE) and tunnel crossing adjacent newly-built retaining structure (TCN) were simulated and the earth pressure variations and ground settlement distribution during excavation were analyzed. For TCE condition, the earth pressure increments, maximum ground settlement and the curvature of the ground settlement curve are negatively related to H/B, but positively related to H/s and H/w. For TCN condition, most trends are consistent with TCE except that the earth pressure increments and the curvature of ground settlement curve are negatively related to H/w. The maximum ground settlement is larger than that observed in tunnel crossing the existing underground structure. This study provides an assessment basis for the design and construction under confined space conditions.

Sound propagation along the surface of the ground can be affected by the roughness of the ground surface and the direction of the wind. Noise Source parameter and ground factor are estimated using the measured results of two points under particular environmental condition, and the noise level of arbitrary points under the same environmental condition can be estimated. The results can be used for the prediction of the noise level from a source above a plain and homogeneous ground surface with no obstacles nearby. Upward and downward conditions are also addressed in addition to ground effect. The proposed method can be utilized to estimate the noise level of specific noise environment and its validity was confirmed with the results of actual field measurement.
The bearing capacity of a soil can be improved by conventional ground improvement techniques such as stabilization and compaction methods. Recently, the use of geotextiles in improving the bearing capacity of soils has become popular because of the availability of durable and strong geosynthetic materials. In this paper, through the laboratory model tests on sandy ground reinforced by geotextiles with the strip footing under plane strain condition, the effects of bearing capacity improvement on the sandy ground and its behaviour were investigated.
This paper is the research result about centrifuge model experiments of investigating the behavior of bridge abutment on the sloped ground. Ground condition of the studied site was the bridge abutment with pile foundation adjacent to the slope. The pile foundations was supported on the soft rocks covered with the embankment. Evaluating the behavior of such a complicate ground and structure conditions was not easy so that the centrifuge modelling was performed to find the overall behavior of them. Layout of centrifuge model experiment was simplified to simulate easily the actual behavior of very complicate site condition. Construction process in field such as ground excavation for footing foundation, installation of piles, placement of footing and bridge abutment, backfilling and surcharge loading eas duplicated in the centrifuge model experiment. Consequently, the stability of the piled bridge abutment adjacent to the slope of embankment was evaluated throughout centrifuge modelling.

In the case of relatively good ground and construction condition in the deep excavation for the construction of subway, railway, building etc., flexible earth retaining systems are often used in an economical point of view. It is generally known that the mechanism of behavior in the flexible earth retaining system is relatively more complicated than the rigid earth retaining system. Moreover in the case of long span strut supporting system the analysis of strut axial force change becomes more difficult when the differences of ground condition and excavation work progress on both sides of excavation section are added. When deeper excavation than the specification or installation delay of supporting system is done or change of ground condition is faced due to the construction conditions during construction process, lots of axial force can be induced in some struts and that can threaten the safety of construction. This paper introduces two examples of long span deep excavation where struts and rock bolts were used as a supporting system with flexible wall structure. And the sections of two examples are 50 meters apart in one construction site, they have almost similar design and construction conditions. The characteristics of ground deformation and strut axial force change were analysed, the similarity and difference between measurement results of tow examples were compared and investigated. The effort of this article aims to improve and develop the technique of design and construction in the coming projects having similar ground condition and supporting method.

When a patient is positioned at insulated bed and practitioner is positioned at insulated floor, that condition could be a cause of lessening effect in acupuncture practice. We investigated how Ground connection and Insulation could influence on the electrical meridian potential between practitioner and patient during acupuncture practice. We treated 30 normal healthy subjects with acupuncture and measured changes in the electrical potential between the stomach meridian points ST-39 and ST-37 in response to light touch after insertion of a needle at ST-36. At first, we stimulated non-insulated needle and measured electrical potentials for non ground, patient ground only, practitioner ground only, all ground respectively. Then we used insulated needles and measured same as above. Non-insulated all ground subject elicited positive mean potential $44.6{\pm}19.2{\mu}V$ and showed $181.4{\pm}59.7{\mu}V$ peak to peak potential. Practitioner ground only showed negative mean potential of $51.5{\pm}9.3{\mu}V$ and $367.4{\pm}27.8{\mu}V$ of peak to peak potential. Patient ground only revealed no mean potential of $2.9{\pm}1.3{\mu}V$, $16.4{\pm}11.9{\mu}V$ of peak to peak potential. All ground showed no mean potential of $1.6{\pm}0.7{\mu}V$, $3.3{\pm}1.9{\mu}V$ of peak to peak potential. In case of Insulated condition, there elicited no mean potential. Non ground and Practitioner only showed weak value of peak to peak potential as $7.8{\pm}2.6{\mu}V$ and $8.4{\pm}2.5{\mu}V$ each. But patient only and all ground showed no potential as $4.7{\pm}2.2{\mu}V$, $3.4{\pm}2.2{\mu}V$, respectively. Therefore, Ground connection modulate the energy transfer course between practitioner and patient. Insulation block energy transfer but static electrical impulse between practitioner and patient.

Recently, the construction method of high pressure jet-grouting is in wide-use, for the purpose of structure foundation ground, reinforcing of ground behind propped retaining walls and cut-off in order to perform safe construction of underground excavation work. This study was performed a serious of tests of field permeability and unconfined compressive strength upon ground improved established on the ground behind propped retaining walls and examined proper jet mechanism by changing the construction parameter value of high pressure jet-grouting. In addition, we got the conclusion like the followings as a result of inspecting the condition of earth pressure distribution and deformation, using elasto-plastic method and FEM. 1. In that characteristics of strength of ground improved, with the same condition of construction parameter, unconfined compressive strength of sand gravel is shown bigger than that of silty sand by about 1.6 times and cut-off effect is shown to have effect of reducing the permeability of original ground by about 10$^{-2}$ ~10$^{-3}$ cm/s. 2. As a result of analysis of figures of horizontal displacing quantity of propped retaining walls materials regarding before and after High pressure jet- grouting through FEM, the reducing quantity of 0.1~0.3mm in maximum horizontal displacement is shown.

In the vertical drain method, discharge capacity is generally one of the most important factor which affect on the estimation of the drain efficiency. However, adopting the drain considering discharge capacity only is not sufficiently considered method so that systematic criteria for adoption is necessary to choose the most suitable drain. Therefore, this study represents the application method considering behavior of the ground and vertical drain which is coupled together and ground improvement efficiency analyzing various cases of discharge capacity test performed in the recent soft ground improvement projects. According to the analysis, most drains tend to satisfy the required discharge capacity. It presents that deformed shape of the drains and well resistance estimation along the ground settlement, improvement efficiency by water content ratio along the depth and shear strength obtained after ground improvement should be considered altogether with the discharge capacity to select the proper drain. Also, appropriate adoption of drain material considering the ground condition is vital through analyzing the field measured data and comparing the result of the discharge capacity test as various vertical drain materials are being constructed continuously.

Tunnelling-induced settlements and lateral ground movements have been investigated by numerical parametric studies considering ground condition, excavation characteristics, and ground layers. Before the numerical study the existing methods of ground movement estimation have been collected and analysed to have some information of ground movements and to improve them providing a fundamental material for the numerical study. Numerical model simulation has been performed of a physical model test of tunnel excavation in which the ground movements were measured reliably and the results have been used to determine the numerical approach and the appropriate soil constitutive mode. With this procedure done, the results of numerical parametric studies have been put together to analyze and understand tunnelling-induced settlements and lateral ground movements.
