  • The new method is proposed to improve high speed detection of grid voltage phase and magnitude during a voltage dip due to a grid faults. Usually, A LPF(Low Pass Filter) is used in the feedback loop of PLL (Phase Locked Loop) system because the measured grid voltage contains harmonic distortions and sensor noises. so, a new design method of the loop gain of the PI -type controller in the PLL system is proposed with the consideration of the dynamics of the LPF. As a result, a better transient response can be obtained with the proposed design method. The LPF frequency and PI controller gain are designed in coordination according to the steady state and dynamic performance requirement. This paper shows the feasibility and the usefulness of the proposed methods through the computer simulation and the lab-scale experiments.

  • One of the main unresolved issues in large-eddy simulation(LES) of wall-bounded turbulent flows is the requirement of high spatial resolution in the near-wall region, especially in the spanwise direction. Such high resolution required in the near-wall region is generally used throughout the computational domain, making simulations of high Reynolds number, complex-geometry flows prohibitive. A grid-embedding strategy using a nonconforming spectral domain-decomposition method is proposed to address this limitation. This method provides an efficient way of clustering grid points in the near-wall region with spectral accuracy. LES of transitional and turbulent channel flow has been performed to evaluate the proposed grid-embedding technique. The computational domain is divided into three subdomains to resolve the near-wall regions in the spanwise direction. Spectral patching collocation methods are used for the grid-embedding and appropriate conditions are suggested for the interface matching. Results of LES using the grid-embedding strategy are promising compared to LES of global spectral method and direct numerical simulation. Overall, the results show that the spectral domain-decomposition grid-embedding technique provides an efficient method for resolving the near-wall region in LES of complex flows of engineering interest, allowing significant savings in the computational CPU and memory.

  • In this paper, the carriage load analyses of stores installed on aircraft are conducted to validate the chimera grid method applied to an unstructured CFD solver, UMSAPv. First, the chimera grid method of UMSAPv is verified for the well-known Eglin Wing/Pylon/Finned store problem. Next, an angle of attack sweep of F/A-18C clean configuration is conducted at a subsonic speed. The computed results are compared with the results of the previous study using MSAPv, a structured CFD solver, to show the validity of Umsapv. Finally, the carriage of F/A-18C JDAM is carried out with a chimera grid as well as a single block grid. The computed results are compared with other computational, experimental and the flight tests.

  • Recently, grid computing environment has being changed to the service-oriented grid integrated with Web Services. In this architecture, there is the service-oriented grid application in which Grid Services are executed according to the workflow of the grid application. This implies that the grid scheduling method needs to consider grid service characteristics. Therefore, we propose the grid service performance model based on factors such as service availability, accessibility, reliability, throughput, and slowdown, and develop service scheduling method to increase performance of the service-oriented grid application.

  • In this paper, we propose a volume rendering method using grid computing for large-scale volume data. Grid computing is attractive because medical institutions and research facilities often have a large number of idle computers. A large-scale volume data is divided into sub-volumes and the sub-volumes are rendered using grid computing. When using grid computing, different computers rarely have the same processor speeds. Thus the return order of results rarely matches the sending order. However order is vital when combining results to create a final image. Job-Scheduling is important in grid computing for volume rendering, so we use an obstacle-flag which changes priorities dynamically to manage sub-volume results. Obstacle-Flags manage visibility of each sub-volume when line of sight from the view point is obscured by other subvolumes. The proposed Dynamic Job-Scheduling based on visibility substantially increases efficiency. Our Dynamic Job-Scheduling method was implemented on our university's campus grid and we conducted comparative experiments, which showed that the proposed method provides significant improvements in efficiency for large-scale volume rendering.

  • In this paper, a robust and fast grid synchronization method of a three-phase power converter is proposed. The amplitude and phase information of grid voltages are essential for power converters to be properly connected into the utility. The phase-lock-loop in synchronous reference frame has been widely adopted for the three-phase converter system since it shows a satisfactory performance under balanced grid voltages. However, power converters often operate under abnormal grid conditions, i.e. unbalanced by grid faults and frequency variations, and thus a proper active and reactive power control cannot be guaranteed. The proposed method adopts a second order generalized integrator in synchronous reference frame to detect positive sequence components under unbalanced grid voltages. The proposed method has a fast and robust performance due to its higher gain and frequency adaptive capability. Simulation and experimental results show the verification of the proposed synchronization algorithm and the effectiveness to detect positive sequence voltage.

  • In this study, we discuss CIP method, which can treat compressible/incompressible problem and multi-phase problem. We can apply this method to the general equations by using CCUP. In this paper, non-staggered grid arrangement and predictor-corrector method are used to enhance later development and the solution accuracy and convergence performance. To validate the numerical algorithm proposed in this paper, the two-dimensional unsteady flow in the driven cavity is simulated. The numerical results of this subject using the present algorithm are compared with other numerical results. As a result, it is prived that the present scheme gives stable and improved solutions, and the results even coarse grid are in good agreement with other result using a fine grid arrangement.

  • In this work, we developed an accurate and efficient radiative finite volume method applicable for the complex 2D planar and 3D geometries using an unstructured-grid finite volume method. The present numerical model has fully been validated by several benchmark cases including the radiative heat transfer in quadrilateral enclosure with isothermal medium, tetrahedral enclosure, a three-dimensional idealized furnace, as well as convection-coupled radiative heat transfer in a square enclosure. The numerical results for all cases are well agreed with the previous results. Special emphasis is given to the parallelization of the unstructured-grid radiative FVM using the domain decomposition approach. Numerical results indicate that the present parallel unstructured-grid FVM has the good performance in terms of accuracy, geometric flexibility, and computational efficiency.

  • A volume capturing method using unstructured grid system for numerical analysis of multiphase flows is introduced in the present paper. This method uses an interface capturing method (CICSAM) in a volume of fluid(VOF) scheme for phase interface capturing. The novelty of CICSAM lies in the adaptive combination of high resolution discretization scheme which ensures the preservation of the sharpness and shape of the interface while retaining boundedness of the field, and no explicit interface reconstruction which is perceived to be difficult to implement on unstructured grid system. Several typical test cases for multiphase flows are presented, which are simulated by an in-house solution code(PowerCFD). This code employs an unstructured cell-centered method based on a conservative pressure-based finite-volume method with CICSAM. It is found that the present method simulates efficiently and accurately complex free surface flows such as multiphase flows.

  • A 3-D finite element model combined with a volume tracking method is presented in this work to simulate the mold filling for casting processes. Especially, the analysis involves an adaptive grid method that is created under a criterion of element categorization of filling states and locations in the total region at each time step. By using an adaptive grid wherein the elements, finer than those in internal and external regions, are distributed at the surface region through refinement and coarsening procedures, a more efficient analysis of transient fluid flow with free surface is achieved. Adaptive grid based on VOF method is developed in tetrahedral element system. Through a 3-D analysis of the benchmark test of the casting process, the efficiency of the proposed adaptive grid method is verified. Developed FE code is applied to a typical industrial part of the casting process such as aluminum road wheel.
