For grid-connected LCL-filtered inverters, the inverter-side current can be used as the control object with one current sensor for both LCL resonance damping and over-current protection, while the grid-voltage feedforward or harmonic resonant compensator is used for suppressing low-order grid current harmonics. However, it was found that the grid current harmonics were high and often beyond the standard limitations with this control. The limitations of the inverter-side current control in suppressing low-order grid current harmonics are analyzed through inverter output impedance modeling. No matter which compensator is used, the maximum magnitudes of the inverter output impedance at lower frequencies are closely related to the LCL parameters and are decreased by increasing the control delay. Then, to improve the grid current quality without complicating the control or design, this study proposes designing the filter capacitance considering the current harmonic constraint and using a PWM mode with a short control delay. Test results have confirmed the limitation and verified the performance of the improved approaches.
This paper analyses the harmonic pollution to power grids caused by several high-power rectifiers, summarizes the requirements for rectifiers in suppressing grid-side current harmonics and optimizes a new-type of current source PWM rectifier with a hybrid switch. The rectifier with a hybrid switch boasts significant current characteristics and cost advantages in the high-power area. To further enhance the working frequency of the current source rectifier with a hybrid switch for suppressing grid-side harmonics and reducing the inductance size, this paper proposes an optimal control strategy based on space vector. It also verifies that the optimal control strategy based on space vector can reduce the total harmonic distortion of the grid-side current of the rectifier with a hybrid switch via circuit simulation and experimental results.
This paper proposes a controller design of a distributed source inverter in stand-alone mode or grid-connected mode to compensate the current or voltage harmonics caused by local nonlinear load. The PR-based multi loop controller has been used to improve the dynamic performance of the system and to compensate the output voltage or grid current harmonics. The multi-loop controller consists of an outer current controller and an inner voltage controller for the output voltage control in stand-alone mode. In grid-connected mode, an outer current controller is added to the output voltage controller for the grid current control. The design performance of each controller is described through the Root locus and Bode plot of the transfer functions. The validity of the proposed control algorithm and design parameters has been verified through the PSiM simulation and experimental results.
The output voltage of an off-grid inverter is influenced by load current, and the voltage harmonics especially the 5th and 7th are increased with nonlinear loads. In this paper, to attenuate the output voltage harmonics of off-grid inverters with nonlinear loads nearby, a load current feedforward is proposed. It is introduced to a voltage control loop based on the Positive and Negative Sequence Harmonic Regulator (PNSHR) compensation to modify the output impedance at selective frequencies. The parameters of the PNSHR are revised with the output impedance of the off-grid inverter, which minimizes the output impedance of the off-grid inverter. Experimental results verify the proposed method, showing that the output voltage harmonics caused by nonlinear loads can be effectively suppressed.
In order to meet the harmonics standards such as IEEE 519 and P1547 the output quality of a grid connected inverter should satisfy a certain level of Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) value. However, the output quality of an inverter gets degraded due to the grid voltage harmonics, the dead time effects and the nonlinearity of the switches, which all contributes to a higher THD value of the output. In order to meet the required THD value for the inverter output under the distorted grid condition the use of harmonic controller is essential. In this paper a novel feedforward harmonic compensation method is proposed in order to effectively eliminate the low order harmonics in the inverter current to the grid. In the proposed method, unlike the conventional harmonic control methods, the hamonic components are directly compensated by the feedforward terms generated by the PR controller with the grid current in the stationary frame. The proposed method is simple in implementation but powerful in eliminating the harmonics from the output. The effectiveness of proposed method is verified through the PSIM simulation and the experiments with a 5kW single phase grid connected inverter.
Grid-connected inverters should satisfy a certain level of total harmonic distortion (THD) to meet harmonics standards, such as IEEE 519 and P1547. The output quality of an inverter is typically degraded due to grid voltage harmonics, dead time effects, and the device's turn-on/turn-off delay, which all contribute to increasing the THD value of the output. The use of a harmonic controller is essential to meet the required THD value for inverter output under a distorted grid condition. In this study, an improved feedforward harmonic compensation method is proposed to effectively eliminate low-order harmonics in the inverter current to the grid. In the proposed method, harmonic components are directly compensated through feedforward terms generated by the proportional resonant controller with the grid current in a stationary frame. The proposed method is simple to implement but powerful in eliminating harmonics from the output. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through simulation using PSIM software and experiments with a 5 kW single-phase grid-connected inverter.
This paper presents a power control method of high-speed single-phase BLDC motor. Most electric appliances require a power factor corrector (PFC) to mitigate grid current harmonics. However, the reactive components and power semiconductors in the PFC increase system cost and dimension. In this paper, a new motor drive system for a high-speed single-phase BLDC motor is proposed, which can decrease grid current harmonics without PFC by directly manipulating motor power and eliminating bulky electrolytic dc-link capacitor. Given that the proposed motor power control method does not require motor current controller, no current sensor is necessary. Moreover, the proposed algorithms can be easily implemented using a low-cost micro-controller. The effectiveness of the proposed power control method is verified by experiments.

In this paper, the implementation of a three-phase shunt active power filter is presented. The filter is essentially three independent single-phase current-controlled voltage source inverters (CC-VSI) with a common DC bus. The CC- VSI is operated to directly control the AC grid current to be sinusoidal and in phase with the grid voltage without detecting the load currents. The APF consists of a current control loop, which shapes the grid currents to be sinusoidal and a voltage control loop, which regulates the active power balance of the system. The experimental results indicate that the active filter is able to handle predominantly the harmonics, as well as the unbalance and reactive power, so that the grid currents are sinusoidal, in phase with the grid voltages and symmetrical.

The output current of the Grid Connected Inverter (GCI) can be polluted with harmonics mainly due to i) dead time in switches, ii) non-linearity of switches, iii) grid harmonics, and iv) DC link fluctuation. Therefore, it is essential to design the robust Harmonic Compensation (HC) technique for the improvement of output current quality and fulfill the IEEE 1547 Total harmonics Distortion (THD) limit i.e. <5%. The conventional harmonic techniques often are complex in implementation due to their i) additional hardware needs, ii) complex structure, iii) difficulty in tuning of parameters, iv) current controller compatibility issues, and v) higher computational burden. In this paper, to eliminate the harmonics from the GCI output current, a novel Digital Lock-In Amplifier (DLA) based harmonic detection is proposed. The advantage of DLA is that it extracts the harmonic information accurately, which is further compensated by means of PI controller in feed forward manner. Moreover, the proposed HC method does not require additional hardware and it works with any current controller reference frame. To show the effectiveness of the proposed HC method a 5kW GCI prototype built in laboratory. The output current THD is achieved less than 5% even with 10% load, which is verified by simulation and experiment.
This paper proposes a current harmonic compensation method for the grid-connected inverter, especially caused by the grid impedance. Grid impedance causes low order harmonics in the grid current and deteriorates power quality. This paper analyzes the negative impact of the grid impedance, and proposes an active feedforward compensation method. Proposing method verified through simulation and experiment with 3-phase 1.5kW voltage source inverter prototype.
