  • Abnormal climate is a phenomenon in which meteorological factors such as temperature and precipitation are significantly higher or lower than normal, and is defined by the World Meteorological Organization as a 30-year period. However, over the past 30 years, abnormal climate phenomena have occurred more frequently around the world than in the past. In Korea, abnormal climate phenomena such as abnormally high temperatures on the Korean Peninsula, drought, heatwave and heavy rain in summer are occurring in March 2023. Among them, heatwaves are expected to increase in frequency compared to other abnormal climates. This suggests that heatwave should be recognised as a disaster rather than just another extreme weather event. According to several previous studies, greenhouse gases and meteorological factors are expected to affect heatwaves, so this paper uses logistic regression and discriminant analysis on meteorological element data and greenhouse gas data in Gwangju from 2008 to 2022. We analyzed the impact of heatwaves. As a result of the analysis, greenhouse gases were selected as effective variables for heatwaves compared to the past, and among them, chlorofluorocarbons were judged to have a stronger effect on heatwaves than other greenhouse gases. Since greenhouse gases have a significant impact on heatwaves, in order to overcome heatwaves and abnormal climates, greenhouse gases must be minimized to overcome heatwaves and abnormal climates.

  • South Korean central government has launched the first comprehensive climate change policies in 1999, and they have been renewed every three year. The third policies ended in 2007. However, it is quite rare to analyze whether the climate change policies are effective against climate change. In this context, this paper aims at analyzing the effectiveness of climate change policy which was launched for seven years from 1999 to 2007 in South Korea. The effectiveness analysis of policy can be done in terms of the individual policy and/or all policies being synthesized as a comprehensive unit. Employing the latter methodology, this paper analyzed the effectiveness on the basis of economic growth as independent variable, greenhouse gas emission as dependent variable, and energy use and its process as intervening variable. Seven analytic indicators covering the three variables were selected on the basis of two points in time before and after climate change policy having been launched. The seven indicators were analyzed in terms of three aspects. They were the change in the state of each indicator, the effectiveness of climate change policy from 1999 to 2007, and the effectiveness process from 1999 to 2007. The effectiveness process was analyzed in terms of the relational context and its flow processing path. Economic growth was advanced remarkably with increase in the total consumption of energy. As a result, greenhouse gas emission increased. However, energy efficiency increased with significant decrease in energy intensity, carbon intensity, and energy elasticity. The expansion of new and renewable energy over total energy supply was not effective significantly on the decrease in greenhouse gas emission. The processing path of climate change policy being effective advanced toward increase in energy efficiency through energy intensity rather than toward sustainable development. Such a way of the effectiveness of climate change policy implies that most policies focused on adaptation rather than on mitigation.

  • The present study attempts to understand the emission pattern of greenhouse gases in people's daily life through the estimation and analysis of the amount and characteristics of the greenhouse gases. Based on the survey of 1,000 people throughout the nation, monthly emission of greenhouse gases per-capita was estimated from their use of fuels, electricity, water, and personal and public transportation means in addition to their waste generation. In the case of personal car drivers, greenhouse gas emission was the greatest from their cars, followed by the emission from electricity, fuels, and public transportation. Emission from water consumption and waste generation was relatively low. Fuel consumption varied depending on the number of household members, their housing type, and the size of their living spaces. Results showed that single-person households emitted the largest amount of per-capita greenhouse gas while greenhouse gas emission from electricity was inversely proportional to the number of persons in a given household.

  • This study investigated the effects of organic matter decomposition on the emission of greenhouse gas under the influence of environmental factors such as change of climate condition ($CO_2$ concentration and temperature), vegetation, and N concentration in the soil of Gyeongan stream in the laboratory. The experimental results showed that organic matter decomposition and $CH_4$, $CO_2$ flux were influenced by changes of complex environmental conditions. Organic matter decomposition rate was affected by changes of climate condition with N concentration and climate condition with vegetation. Through the results of $CH_4$, $CO_2$ flux, $CH_4$ flux was affected by change of climate condition with N concentration and climate condition with vegetation and affected by the presence of vegetation and N concentration. $CO_2$ flux was affected by change of climate condition with vegetation and vegetation with N concentration. According to results of the study, change of (1) climate conditions, (2) vegetation, and (3) N concentration, each have an effect on organic decomposition rate, that also influences emission of greenhouse gas. It is known that climate change is related to an increase in greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere However, additional study will be needed whether vegetation could remove positive effect of nitrogen addition in soil since this study shows opposite results of organic matter decomposition in response to the nitrogen addition.

  • For a comprehensive understanding of human impact on a change of the global climate, it is necessary to obtain reliable information on man-induced fluxes of greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) guidelines (IPCC 1996, IPCC 2000, IPCC2006) provide the methods and procedures of estimating the national GHG emission inventories. Particularly, IPCC 2006 contains new chapter of key conceptions uncertainties, including the types of uncertainties and assessment methods of uncertainties in GHG emission inventories. In this paper, a compact and clear survey on volume 1 of IPCC 2006, which contains the general information on inventory compilation, uncertainty and guidance on the choice of methods, and QC/QA, is given with emphasis on uncertainty analysis.

  • Indirect $CO_2$ effect due to non-methane volatile organic compound (NMVOC) emissions from solvent and product use and fugitive NMVOC emissions from fuels in the Republic of Korea and 13 Annex I countries under United Nations Framework on Climate Change were estimated and the proportions of them to total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions ranged from 0.092% to 0.45% in 2006. Indirect greenhouse effect ($CO_2$, $CH_4$, and $O_3$) were estimated at 13 photochemical assessment monitoring sites in the Republic of Korea using concentrations of 8 NMVOCs of which indirect global warming potential (GWP) were available. The contribution of toluene to mixing ratio was highest at 11 sites and however, the contribution of toluene to indirect greenhouse effect was highest at nine sites. In contrast to toluene, the contributions of ethane, butane, and ethylene were enhanced. The indirect greenhouse effects of ethane and propane, of which ozone formation potentials are the lowest and the third lowest respectively among targeted 10 NMVOCs, ranked first and fourth highest respectively. Acetaldehyde has relatively higher maximum incremental reactivity and is classified as probable human carcinogen however, its indirect GWP ranked second lowest.

  • The United Nations (UN) has tried to make international agreement to restrict artificial greenhouse gas emissions and the UN has concluded the UN Framework Convention Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Kyoto protocol. Moreover, in 2012, the European Union announced that they will enforce the Directive 2008/101/EC. Therefore, after 2012, aircraft carriers that depart or arrive from EU will follow that regulation. For these reasons, Korea should prepare systematic and effective policy to reduce greenhouse gas emission from aviation activities. The purpose of this study is to find out effective measures to reduce greenhouse gas emission from aviation activities through research by countries all over the world. Here are the 4 measures to reduce greenhouse gas emission from Aviation activities that were found through research UK and Japan's policies. First, Korea should implement aggressive incentive policies. Providing proper incentive can attract voluntary participation of aircraft carriers to reduce greenhouse gas emission. Second, the government should adopt environmental tax on use of fossil fuels. Third, Korea should adopt the greenhouse gas Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). Lastly, the Korea government should pull in with the international community to establish world-wide environmental policies.

  • We constructed climagraphs for 16 regions of Korea by using the average monthly minimum air temperature, maximum air temperature and global radiation. We characterized the outside climate requirements corresponding to the climate requirements of crops in greenhouses. The climagraphs allow to decide the appropriate climate periods for greenhouse cultivation without heating and cooling equipment. These graphs may be used for analyzing climatic characteristic of a given area, selecting the suitable region and greenhouse and making a rational plan for greenhouse cropping in Korea. We found difficulty in deciding the beginning and end of greenhouse heating and cooling period due to insufficient references.

  • The major greenhouse gases (GHGs) in agricultural sector are methane ($CH_4$), nitrous oxide ($N_2O$), carbon dioxide ($CO_2$). GHGs emissions are estimated by pertinent source category in a guideline book from Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) such as methane from rice paddy, nitrous oxide from agricultural soil and crop residue burning. The methods for estimation GHGs emissions in agricultural sector are based on 1996 and 2006 IPCC guideline, 2000 and 2003 Good Practice Guidance. In general, GHG emissions were calculated by multiplying the activity data by emission factor. The total GHGs emission is $10,863Gg\;CO_2-eq$. from crop cultivation in agricultural sector in 2013. The emission is divided by the ratio of greenhouse gases that methane and nitrous oxide are 64% and 34%, respectively. Each gas emission according to the source categories is $7,000Gg\;CO_2-eq$. from rice paddy field, $3,897Gg\;CO_2-eq$. from agricultural soil, and $21Gg\;CO_2-eq$. from field burning, respectively. The GHGs emission in agricultural sector had been gradually decreased from 1990 to 2013 because of the reduction of cultivation. In order to compare with indirect emissions from agricultural soil, each emission was calculated using IPCC default factors (D) and country specific emission factors (CS). Nitrous oxide emission by CS applied in indirect emission, as nitrogen leaching and run off, was lower about 50% than that by D.
