An experimental study on tailings deposition characteristics and variation of tailings dam saturation line

  • This study adopted soil test and laboratory physical model experiments to simulate the tailings impoundment accumulation process according to the principle of similarity. Relying on the practical engineering, it analyzed the tailings deposition characteristics on dry beach surface during the damming process, as well as the variation rules of dam saturation line. Results suggested that, the tailings particles gradually became finer along the dry beach surface to inside the impoundment. The particle size suddenly changed at the junction between the deposited beach and the water surface, which displayed an obvious coarsening phenomenon. Besides, the deposited beach exhibited the vertical feature of coarse upward and fine downward on the whole. Additionally, in the physical model, the saturation line elevated with the increase in dam height, and its amplitude was relatively obvious within the range of 1.0-4.5 m away from the initial dam. Under flood condition, the saturation line height was higher than that under normal condition on the whole, with the maximum height difference of 4 cm. This study could provide an important theoretical basis for further studies on dam failure experiments and the evolution rules of leaked tailings flow.

  • Green technology encompasses a growing group of methods and materials, from techniques for generating energy and alternative resources to non-toxic cleaning products. Green technology is expected to solve current problems in atmospheric environment such as climate changes due to green house gases and hazardous air pollutants. This paper provides a review on the status of green technology and policy guidelines in Korea as well as the green technology for air pollutants. It presents the R&D projects and future direction in atmospheric environment, and the green technology in mobile source air pollution. Emerging green technology contributes to sustainable growth and development of atmospheric environmental industry for better air quality.

  • Hydrogen is considered a key energy source to achieve carbon neutrality through the global goal of 'Net Zero'. Due to limitations in domestic green hydrogen production, Korean companies are interested in importing green hydrogen produced overseas. Because Australia and the Middle East possess high-quality renewable energy resources, they are attracting attention as suitable regions for producing green hydrogen using renewable energy. The cost of constructing and operating a green ammonia plant varies depending on the region. In this study, an economic feasibility comparison of green ammonia plant construction in Australia and the Middle East is conducted. Through this, it is expected to contribute to the economic analysis and feasibility analysis of the project to import hydrogen in the form of green ammonia into Korea.

Identification of Genes Involved in Decolorization of Crystal Violet and Malachite Green in Citrobacter sp. (Citrobacter sp.에서 crystal violet와 malachite green 색소분해에 관여하는 유전자들의 동정)

  • To identify genes involved in the decolorization of both crystal violet and malachite green, we isolated random mutants generated by transposon insertion in triphenylmethane-decolorizing bacterium, Citrobacter sp. The resulting mutant bank yielded 14 mutants with complete defect in color removal capability of both crystal violet and malachite green. Southern hybridization with a Tn5 fragment as a probe showed a single hybridized band in 5 mutants and these mutants appeared to have insertions at different sites of the chromosome. Tn5-inserted genes were isolated and the DNA sequence flanking Tn5 was determined. From comparison with a sequence database, putative protein products encoded by cmg genes were identified as follows. cmg 2 is MaIC protein in maltose transport system; cmg 6 is transcriptional regulator (LysR-type): cmg 12 is a putative oxidoreductase. The sequences deduced from two cmg genes, cmg 8 and cmg 11, showed no significant similarity to any protein with a known function. Therefore, these results indicate that these two cmg genes encode unidentified proteins responsible for decolorization of both crystal violet and malachite green.

Turfgrass Establishment of USGA Putting Greens Related with Soil Physical Properties (USGA 공법으로 조성된 그린의 토앙물리성과 Bentgrass의 생육)

  • USGA green specification is currently accepted in construction method of Korea. This study was carried out to find the factors influencing growth of turfgrass associated with soil physical properties of soil root-zone on golf green constructed with USGA method. Three putting greens in poor turfgrass and one in good turfgrass condition were selected for investigation on one golf course site at mid-South Korean peninsula. Soil hardness, moisture content, root length, and turf density were measured on-site greens, and soil physical properties and soil chemical properties also analyzed in laboratory. As a result of on-site surveys and soil physical tests in laboratory, soil physical properties were most important factors which influenced on turfgrass growth at tested greens. The results of soil particle analysis on green No. 2, in good turf condition, matched USGA sand particle recommendations. But those greens such as Nos. 1, 11 and 16, in poor putting greens, showed high soil compaction and improper soil particle distribution. Those factors created low leaf density, poor root depth, and higher moisture content compared with lower part of topsoil. Such phenomena caused inadequate turfgrass growth with soil hardening associated with poor drainage. Therefore, declines of soil physical properties associated with improper particle distribution caused a major factor influencing on turfgrass growth in golf green. Adequate test of soil particle analysis by USGA specification and proper construction method followed by adequate turf maintenance should be performed to obtain optimal turf quality on putting green.

  • The extensive use of fossil resources over the past century resulted in dwindling supply and surging price of oil and it is strongly suspected that irreversible global climate change might be due to carbon dioxide emitted from combustion of fossil carbons. With this regard, much attention is recently paid to renewable and sustainable resources as alternatives to petroleum. In this review, we considered a range of efforts to replace petroleum-derived chemicals, particularly adhesive materials with renewable and sustainable plant-based biomass feedstock.

New records of the genus Chroomonas and two Chroomonas species (Cryptomonadales, Cryptophyceae) from Korean freshwater

  • The genus Chroomonas is a group of blue-green colored cryptomonads. This study describes two freshwater Chroomonas species for the first time in South Korea: Chroomonas nordstedtii Hansgirg and Chroomonas coerulea (Geitler) Skuja. We examined the morphology and ultrastructure of these species by light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. These two Chroomonas species were blue-green colored and ovate to oval-shaped. Chroomonas nordstedtii was characterized by two Maupas ovals with hexagonal periplast plates, whereas C. coerulea was characterized by one eyespot with rectangular periplast plates. A molecular phylogeny with data from nuclear SSU rRNA and chloroplast rbcL genes revealed that Korean C. nordstedtii formed a distinct clade with NIES-708, NIES-1004 from Japan, and UTEX 2779 from Colorado, USA, while C. coerulea formed a clade with ACOI 1366 from Portugal.

A Conceptual Approach to Green Human Resource Management and Corporate Environmental Responsibility in the Hospitality Industry

  • Substantial growth in the economy and extensive use of natural resources has become a major issue in the modern world. Organizations have started to worry about the environment and are beginning to invest in and practice green strategies. Companies should be responsible for the environment and use sustainable methods to run their businesses. The main purpose of this study is to explore the conceptual approach to Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) practices and Corporate Environmental Responsibility (CER) in the hospitality industry. The theoretical framework of GHRM practices such as green recruitment, green selection, green training and development, green performance appraisal, green reward and compensation, and corporate environmental responsibility have been comprehensively studied for this purpose. Green Human Resource Management in the hospitality sector is a less studied and rarely implemented phenomenon. The integration of GHRM and CER along with green competitive advantage and green supply chain management in hospitality is new concept in hospitality industry. Study suggests that Corporate environmental responsibility (CER) and Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) have a significant role in the hospitality industry. However, for sustainable development of tourism and hospitality, this concept should be capitalized with necessary research and development.
