  • As a public transit playing an important role in the era of high gas prices, subway corresponds the national strategy 'Low carbon, Green growth'; accordingly, passengers who would use the transportation are steadily increasing. Subway operators are required to provide subway users with services based on higher-quality system, safety, convenience & high reliability level. Furthermore, as the legally allowed maximum life time of EMUs is extended, it is necessary to localize & standardize the parts of EMUs. This paper presents a modelling of systematic EMU(SR001) manufacturing technique which enables us to reflect passenger and subway operator's demands in the whole EMU manufacturing process from the initial design phase to its completion by making full use of the know-how based on subway operators' experiences. SR001 enabled SMRT's staffs to participate in the EMU design & its equipment manufacturing; consequently, it realized the innovative system which meets passengers' requirements. Moreover, the process lead time was reduced dramatically. The result of this research will be helpful in providing useful guidelines for railway industry policy and development making in Korea.

  • There has been a growing interest toward railroad conjunction with opening of high-speed rail in 2004 and concurrent implementation of nation's green growth policies. Meanwhile, users' expectation on service of public transportation, especially railroad has been growing than since ever due to heightened quality of life, entering aging society, voice of equity for minorities, and greater interest in environments of communities. In order to come up with the expectations, actual improvements for user's convenience/comfort and its assessment strategies in terms of service quality level are necessary. This study defines the index of this aspect of service level as 'Sensitivity Quality'. This is conceived as one of the important factors to define travel cost as do the travel time and fare, but hardly taken into consideration when assessing a transportation system or policy-making for a transportation project. The elements included for the assessment of the sensitivity quality in this study are feeling of a ride, conformability and convenience what users feel and recognize using a train. This paper suggests that establishing sensitivity quality elements would contribute in foundation of assessing service quality and provide improved public transportation services through their scientific and objective development and management.

  • Recent days, the global warming problem due to excessive use of fossil fuels has been the world wide issue so that Korea government and developed countries make an alternative plan for eco-friendly and transportations by utilizing bicycles for health promotion. Existing Public Bicycle Rental Service Systems provide simple service such as bicycle rental management and tracking the location. However there is no user-side service for the information of the measure of carbon reduction, or use of bicycles. The proposed system in this paper provides users' health information, environmental information, personal information, counseling services and the measures of carbon reduction. The new system has been developed to carry out reducing carbon and growing green in terms of using bicycles by adopting Web 2.0 technology.

  • A comparative analysis of rooftop greening in Korea and Japan was carried out to understand current status of rooftop greening creation and technology and to give directions to frame a policy or plan on rooftop greening in Korea. Besides literature studies, questionnaire survey to Korean and Japanese experts on rooftop greening were done. As results, the annual creation areas, the types and the scales of rooftop greening in Seoul and Tokyo until 2007 were analysed and the satisfaction on the creation areas and technologies, the preference types, the present levels of and the most important parts among policies (support systems), technologies (creation methods), materials, maintenances and user programs for the development or expansion of rooftop greening in Korea and Japan were compared. The creation areas of rooftop greening in Seoul until 2007 was around 15% in Tokyo but the increasing rate of those in Seoul was faster than in Tokyo. Korean needs for the improvement on the rooftop greening systems and technologies were higher than Japanese, but both desired the expansion of rooftop greening areas in both countries. Korean preferred semi-intensive rooftop greening system but Japanese preferred intensive system. Korean and Japanese rooftop greening experts preferred policies (support systems) and technologies (creation methods) for the most important part for the development or expansion of rooftop greening in both countries.

  • This study estimates the random utility function of fluid milk using 1,165 survey responses in Laos. It finds that both products' attributes and individual characteristics affect consumers' preference for the milk and the hypothetical brand of Laos-Korea has a potential compared to four real dairy products. Results also show that calories have a positive relationship with consumer's preference while the price and fat content have a negative one. The decision for choosing each brand is significantly affected by individual characteristics such as gender, age, whether or not respondents live with their children, the level of education, income, the frequency of purchasing milk per week, and the region where they live. The preference for five brands appears in the order of Foremost, Nabong, Thai-Danish, Meiji, and Lao-Korea, and probabilities of purchasing each brand at the mean level are 30.9%, 17.48%, 21.48%, 15.0% and 10.39%, respectively. Nabong that was Lao national milk brand still has a significant market power even though it was closed in 2008. The policies to promote milk industry by implementing its national milk brand again would be more effective if it focuses on the young generation, female consumers, families with children, quality of dairy products, and Vientiane capital areas.
