  • BACKGROUND: Cultivation of winter cover crops is strongly recommended to increase land utilization efficiency, animal feeding material self-production, and to improve soil and environmental quality. METHODS AND RESULTS: Four major winter crops (barley, Chinese milk vetch, hairy vetch, and rye) having different C/N ratio were seeded in silt loam paddy soil in the November 2007 and the aboveground biomass was harvested on the late May 2008 to evaluate its effectiveness as green manure, and root biomass distribution was characterized at the different depth (0-60 cm) to study its effect on physical properties and carbon sequestration in soil. During this experiment, the naturally growing weed in the rice paddy soil in Korea, short awn foxtail (Alopecurus aequalis Sobol), was considered as control treatment. Above-ground biomass of all cover crops selected was significantly higher than that of the control treatment (2.8 Mg/ha). Comparatively higher above-ground biomass productivity of rye and barley (15.8 and 13.5 Mg/ha, respectively) suggested that these cover crops possibly had the highest potential as a green manure and animal feeding material. Root biomass production of different cover crops followed the same trend as that for their above ground biomass. Rye (Secale cereal) might have the highest potential for soil C accumulation (7893 C kg/ha) by root biomass development, and then followed by barley (6985 C kg/ha), hairy vetch (6467 C kg/ha), Chinese milk vetch (6671 C kg/ha), and control (5791 C kg/ha). CONCLUSION(s): Cover crops like rye and barley having high biomass productivity might be the most effective winter cover crops to increase organic carbon distribution in different soil aggregates which might be beneficial to improve soil structure, aeration etc. and C sequestration.

  • This study was investigated the growth characteristics of 'Nongjingo' cultivar(Lentinula edodes) according to relative humidity(RH). The color difference of the pileus showed the highest L(Lightness, L) value in RH65 and the a(Redness, a) value in RH95. b(Yellowness, b) values were similar in all treatments. The hardness of pileus is highest at RH95. As the relative humidity increased, the length of pileus and stipe tended to increase. The diameter and thickness of pileus were high at RH95%. The diameter of stipe could not see the big difference in the three treatment groups. This study growth characteristics and yield were increased at higher relative humidity, but quality was decreased. Therefore, must adjust the relative humidity to produce high quality mushrooms.

  • BACKGROUND: Soil incorporation of green manure crop(GMC) is one of the methods for reducing continuous cropping injury and increasing yield of carrot. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of green manure crops on growth and yield of carrot for reduction of continuous cropping injury of carrot through crop rotation. METHODS AND RESULTS: To reduce the injury by continuous cropping system(CCS) of carrot cultivation, GMCs such as crotalaria and sudangrass were applied, which GMC was sowed in latter-June and returned to soil in latter-October. Nutrient contributions of N, $P_2O_5$, $K_2O$, CaO, and MgO in crotalaria were 8.3, 7.5, 4.4, 7.8, and 2.1 kg/10a, respectively. Nutrient contributions of N, $P_2O_5$, $K_2O$, CaO, and MgO in sudangrass were 8.4, 8.6, 26.8, 0.3, and 2.7 kg/10a, respectively. After incorporation of GMCs into soil, bulk density in soil with GMCs was lower than that in soil without GMCs(control). In soil after incorporation of GMCs, pH was not different in all treatment conditions, and ranged from 6.37~6.64. EC in soil after incorporation of GMCs was lower than that in soil without GMCs. The OM, T-N, and avail. $P_2O_5$ contents in soil with GMCs were higher than those in soil without GMCs. The growth and yields were increased as 39.2%(6,226 kg/10a) in the rotational cropping system(RCS) as compared to continuous cropping system(control and without NPK) of 4,473 kg/10a. Crotalaria cultivation were the most effective crop for reducing the injury of continuous cropping of carrot. CONCLUSION(S): This study suggest that the RCS using GMCs showed lower disease outbreak density in soil for carrot cultivation as compared to CCS without GMCs. Especially, the GMCs good effect for reduction of continuous cropping injury of carrot.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of various cropping system applied with cattle slurry on productivity of sorghum $\times$ sudangrass hybrid (SSH) and environmental pollution in paddy land. cropping systems used in this study were consisted of two designs, such as double-cropping sorghum $\times$ sudangrass hybrid followed by whole crop barley applied with cattle slurry (DSSCS) and mono-cropping sorghum $\times$ sudangrass hybrid followed by hairy vetch used as green manure (MSSGM). The field experiments were conducted on the clay loam at Backsanmyun, Kimje, Chunlabukdo province in Korea for three years (May 2006 to Apr. 2009). This study was arranged in completely randomized design with three replicates. The yield of dry matter (DM) of SSH in DSSCS increased significantly as compared with that of MSSGM (P<0.05). The contents of crude protein (CP), acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and total digestible nutrients (TDN) of SSH were not influenced by cattle slurry and green manure. The pH, and contents of OM, T-N and $P_2O_5$ in soil samples collected from DSSCS after the end of experiment were higher than those of MSSGM. The pH, and contents of OM in DSSCS treatment were remarkably higher than those at the beginning of the experiment (p<0.05). However, The pH, and contents of OM in MSSGM treatment were hardly influenced, as compared with those at the beginning of the experiment. The contents of T-N in soil samples collected both from DSSCS snd MSSGM treatments were remarkably higher than those at the beginning of the experiment (p<0.05). In addition, the concentrations of CEC in soil samples collected at the end of the experiment were remarkably higher than those at the beginning of the experiment (p<0.05). The concentrations of $NO_3$-N, $NH_3$-N and $PO_4$-P in leaching water were hardly influenced by the cropping system and application of cattle slurry.

  • Organic matter in rice-paddy soils exercises two antagonistic effects on the rice plant under water-logged conditions in growing season in the course of its decomposition: It liberates mineral nutrients and promotes soil fertility. On the other hand, however, it demands oxygen for its decay and therefore competes with rice roots for this element, when applied in large quantity of fresh status. For the practical end of rice culture, it is most desirable that these two effects should not contend with each other. To determine the proper content of organic materials to be applied, the influences of varied amounts of a homogeneous mixture of dried green manure, ranging from 0 to 20g/pot (1/20,000 tanbo), upon hte growth of rice was investigated in a sand culture. Labeled phosphorus fertilizer was also used in the form of KH232PO4 to evaluate the availability of this nutrient in the soil. Under the present experimental conditions, green mature seems to have influenced little on the growth of rice, except on number of grains produced and grains/straw ratio. Moreover, no sympton of growth inhibition is obsrvable even by the largest amount of its application. The available phosphorus, as estimated by A-value, appears to have increased, as the amount of organic materials applied increases. In view of the fact that pure sand instead of a paddy soil is used in this culture, the present results would not be directly applicable to practical rice farming. Besides, the estimated A-value is in need of further study, since it varies according to method of application, as suggested by Nishigki et. al. (1958).

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of crop rotation on the weed occurrence in green onion and red pepper cultivation. Rye and hairy vetch were annually seeded for winter season. The reduction of weed germination was pronounced by about 50% in green onion field, but was not significant in red pepper field through rye cropping. Among weed species, the germination of Abutilon theophrasti, Cyperus iria and Digitaria ciliaris was distinctly inhibited by exudate of rye root, but not by that of hairy vetch in vitro experiment. The return of rye biomass into onion field decreased amount of weed biomass but increased index of weed diversity.

  • This paper is aim to report the core aspects of Codex guideline for organically grown food which is finalized by FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius Commission on May 2000 in 28th session of the Codex committee on food labelling. The chapter of animal production had discussed for a long time before it was finalized in Ottawa/canada as well as use of GMO(Genetically modified organism), manure from factory farming, animal welfare, and fodder inputs consisting of at least 85% for ruminants and 80% for non-ruminants. As the guideline for Codex set out the several things which is very difficult for Asian country, Organic farmer in Korea should pay an attention to maintain/increase the fertility and biological activity by cultivation of legumes, green manures or deep-rooting plants in an appropriate multi-annual rotation programme, and incorporation in the soil of organic material from holding producing in accordance with the guidelines. Pest, diseases and weeds should be controlled by choice of appropriate varieties, appropriate rotation, mechanical cultivation, diversified ecosystems, flame weeding, animal weeding and steam sterilization. The use of plant growth hormone, GMO and manure from industrial management system are not allowed, and closed recycling system, rotation, resistant seeds again pest and disease should be practiced in organic farming. But these are not unfortunately practiced in the country. In the conclusion it was strongly suggested to enact the Basic Standard for Korean organic agriculture which contains the core principles of Codex guidelines, and to try the importation of the most advanced theory, skills and technology from leading country in organic farming.

  • The impact of 1 pound of nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) on warming the atmosphere is almost 310 times that of 1 pound of carbon dioxide. Agricultural soil management is the largest source of $N_2O$ emissions, accounting for about 73% of total $N_2O$ emissions. This study was conducted to evaluate the nitrous oxide emission in the cultivation of soybean during the first year of No-tillage (NT) and Conventional-tillage (CT) practices, under the various conditions such as different kinds of fertilizers, soil temperature, and moisture level. In the experiment, we set CT and NT treatments into 4 different groups - control treatments (no fertilization), green manure treatments, chemical fertilizer treatments and organic manure treatments. In the case of chemical fertilizer treatments, $N_2O$ emission of NT treatment was 7.78 to 22.59% lower than CT treatment. In organic manure treatment, $N_2O$ emission of NT treatment was 6.62% higher than CT treatment in August. But In July and September, $N_2O$ emission of NT treatment was 9.50% 28.38% lower than CT treatment, respectively. Soil temperature was correlated with $N_2O$ emission positively. In the future, continued long-term research on influence of various environmental factors on the generation of $N_2O$ and the economic value of no-till farming is required.

  • As part of the agricultural natural circulation, the present study was performed. Recently, there has been the movement toward reusing the Liquid Pig Manure as an alternative fertilizer sources for agricultural lands. For instance, LPM (Liquid Pig Manure) liquid fertilizer has been developed and widely used in Korea. However, the impacts of LPM on both agricultural environment and crop triticale yield have not been investigated yet. The experiments were studied on paddy field after treatment of LPM on plant height, root length, plant length, dry matter yield and soil chemical properties. The effect of LPM by application on triticale was more increased plant height, root length and plant length than the Control. Chemical soil characteristics were not significantly different between on Control and LPM. Soil pH, OM, TN, $P_2O_5$ and exchangeable cation of triticale (X Triticosecale wittmack) appeared to be lower than before the treatment. Dry matter yield were produced 834.3kg $10a^{-1}$ of in LPM plot and 684.4kg $10a^{-1}$ in Control plot. In these results show abbreviated as the application of LPM increases the yield index of triticale. However, the properties of paddy soil were not affected by the LPM application.
