  • Considering the hydrological los components such as evapotranspiration, interception, surface storage and infiltration, a rainfall excess model for forest watersheds is derived. The Morton model is adopted to estimate the evapotranspration under the wetted environmental conditions. Canopy effects and ground cover interception storage rates are used to determine the net rainfall rates arrived on the surface soil. The infiltration capacity on the permeable surface is estimated from the revised Green-Ampt model derived for the natural unsteady rainfall events. The rainfall excess model derived is applied with the data from Jangpyung watershed, one of the representative watersheds of IHP. Parameters which are calibrated with the data from ten storms, the hydrometeorological, land use and soil informations, and other researchers' papers are presented.

  • To estimate the accumulated infiltration, Horton's and Green-Ampt's equations are usually applied. Because the real infiltration is penetrated into the soil continuously, to cover the problems of the conventional equations derived from the discontinuous infiltration system, new infiltration equation is derived from the concepts of continuous infiltration system. Furthermore, infiltration tests were done to compare the results from the conventional Horton's and Green-Ampt's equations and newly derived equation. Unsaturated permeability is the function of water content ratio or saturation degree, which affects directly to the infiltration capacity and accumulated infiltration. Therefore, the variation term of unsaturated permeability is inserted into the new equation to estimate the proper infiltration capacity and accumulated infiltration. It will make the more accurate analysis for the safety of structure and the behavior of groundwater.

  • Surface failures of slopes in weathered soil are caused by infiltration due to prolonged rainfall. These failures are mainly triggered by the deepening of the wetting band accompanied by a decrease in suction induced by the infiltrating water. This paper reports trends of rainfall-induced wetting band depth in two types of weathered soils that are commonly found in Korea. Both theoretical and numerical analyses are presented based on the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) obtained using filter paper as well as tensiometer tests. It is found that the magnitude of wetting front suction plays a key role in the stability of slopes in weathered soils. Theoretical analysis based on modified Green and Ampt model tends to underestimate the wetting band depth for typical Korean weathered soils. It was also deduced that for Korean weathered soils, the factor of safety drops rapidly once the wetting band depth of 1.2 m is reached.

  • This study refers to temporal variation of physical properties of tilled soil under natural rainfalls. Field measurements of porosity, average hydraulic conductivity and average capillary pressure head on a tilled soil were conducted by soil sampler and air-entry permeameter respectively at regular intervals after tillage. Temporal variation of these physical properties were analysed by cumulative rainfall energy since tillage. Field experiment was conducted on a sandy loam soil at Suwon durging April~July in 1989. The followings are a summary of this study results ; 1. Average porosity just after tillage was 0.548cm$^3$/cm$^3$. As cumulative rainfall energy were increased in 0.1070, 0.1755, 0.3849 J/cm$^2$, average porosity were decreased in 0.506, 0.4]95, 0.468m$^3$/cm$^3$ respectively. 2. Average hydraulic conductivity just after tillage was 45.42cm/hr. As cumulative rainfall energy were increased in 0.1755, 0.2466, 0.2978, 0.3849J/cm$^2$ average hydraulic conductivity were decreased in 15.34, 13.47, 9.58, 8.65cm/hr respectively. 3. As average porosity were decreased in 0.548, 0.506, 0.495, 0.468cm$^3$/cm$^3$ average capillary pressure head were increased in 6.1, 6.7, 6.9, 7.4cm respectively. 4. It was found that temporal variation of porosity, average hydraulic conductivity on a tilled soil might be expressed as a function of cumulative rainfall energy and average capillary pressure head might be expressed as a function of porosity. 5. The results of this study may be helpful to predict infiltration into a tilled soil more accurately by considering Temporal variation of physical properties of soil.

  • The slope failure due to the rainfall infiltration occurs frequently in Korea, since the depth of the weathered residual soil layer is shallow in mountainous region. Depth of the failure surface is shallow and tends to pass near the interface between impermeable bedrock and soil layer. Soil parameters that have a significant impact on the instability of unsaturated slopes due to rainfall infiltration inevitably include large uncertainties. Therefore, this study proposes a probabilistic analysis procedure by Monte Carlo Simulation which considers the hydraulic characteristics and strength characteristics of soil as random variables in order to predict slope failure due to rainfall infiltration. The Green-Ampt infiltration model was modified to reflect the boundary conditions on the slope surface according to the rainfall intensity and the boundary condition of the shallow impermeable bedrock was introduced to predict the stability of unsaturated soil slope with shallow bedrock under constant rainfall intensity. The results of infiltration analysis were used as inputs of infinite slope analysis to calculate the safety factor. The proposed analysis method can be used to calculate the time-dependent failure probability of soil slope due to rainfall infiltration.

  • This study aims to evaluate the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) hourly hydrological modeling performance and compare it with daily SWAT modeling parameters. For the Byeolmicheon catchment ($1.17km^2$) located in the upstream of Gyeongancheon watershed and total 18 storm events measured during 3 years (2011-2013), the hourly SWAT was calibrated and validated using the Green and Ampt (G&A) infiltration equation. The determination coefficient ($R^2$) and Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency (NSE) of hourly SWAT discharge were 0.81 and 0.73 respectively, and the most sensitive parameter was soil saturated hydraulic conductivity (SOL_K) and calibrated with the average value of 0.075 mm/hr. In addition, the hourly SWAT simulation by G&A was compared with the daily SWAT simulation by SCS-CN (Soil Conservation Service-Curve Number) method for the whole 3 years period. The houlrly G&A results showed $R^2$ and NSE of 0.71 and 0.50, and the daily SCS-CN results were 0.71 and 0.66, respectively. The SOL_K by daily SCS_CN method was calibrated at 75.5 mm/hr, 1,000 times greater than the hourly G&A method. The next sensitive parameters for the hourly simulation were lag time of lateral flow (LAT_TIME) and lag time of surface runoff (SURLAG).
