  • The study was conducted to determine greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories in grasslands. After 'Low Carbon Green Growth' was declared a national vision on 2008, Medium-term greenhouse gas reduction was anticipated for 30% reduction compared to Business As Usual (BAU) by 2020. To achieve the reduction targets and prepare to enforce emissions trading (2015), national GHG inventories were measured based on the 1996 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Guidelines (IPCC GL). The national Inventory Report (NIR) of Korea is published every year. Grassland sector measurement was officially added in 2014. GHG removal of grassland soil was measured from 1990 to 2012. Grassland area data of Korea was used for farmland area data in the "Cadastral Statistical Annual Report (1976~2012)". Annual grassland area corresponding to the soil classification was used "Soil classification and commentary in Korea (2011)". Grassland area was divided into 'Grassland remaining Grassland' and 'Land converted to Grassland'. The accumulated variation coefficient was assumed to be the same without time series changes in grassland remaining grassland. Therefore, GHG removal of soil carbon was calculated as zero (0) in grassland remaining grassland. Since the grassland area increases constantly, the grassland soil sinks constantly . However, the land converted to grassland area continued to decrease and GHG removal of soil carbon was reduced. In 2012 (127.35Gg $CO_2$), this removal decreased by 76% compared to 1990 (535.71 Gg $CO_2$). GHG sinks are only grasslands and woodlands. The GHG removaled in grasslands was very small, accounting for 0.2% of the total. However, the study provides value by identifying grasslands as GHG sinks along with forests.

  • This experiment was carried out to determine the effect of pure mineral nitrogen fertilization on dry matter yield and the amounts of advisable mineral nitrogen on grassland according to its age at the "Federal Institue for Agriculture in the Alps" in Austria. The results obtained were as follows: 1. With only PK-fertilizing average dry matter yields per year were progressively declined during the period of the studies. Compared with the relatively younger grassland(1st-5th year) the DM-yields were decreased by 35% in older grassland (11th-final year). 2. Due to the less reduction of DM-yields by mineral nitrogen application according to the age of grassland. With N-fertilizing the reduction of DM-yields in relatively older grassland was less than that of younger grassland by 11-21%. 3. At 4-and 5-cut systems the nitrogen amounts for the highest marginal yield(the "most efficient" Ndressing rate) per ha and year were distinctly declined in the relatively older grassland. 4. Required efficiencies of mineral nitrogen were not influenced by the age of grassland.he age of grassland.

  • For the purpose of using the guideline to evaluate the grassland based on the botanical composition, a valuation figures which were expressed of nine division scale from 0, very poor to 8, excellent were given to the each , grassland species. At first, a figure was given to the 14 1 herbage plants at the grassland in Korea. Fodder value of the grassland was calculated from these valuation figures of the different species and the DM percentages of each plants which was got by analysis or estimation, were only to be multiplied by the different valuation figures and then the sum of these products divided by hundred. It is suggested that the fodder value of the grassland is not only possible to express the botanical conditions of various experiments in some simple figures, but also compare with different types of grassland at the same time.

  • The purpose of this paper is to estimate economic value of multi-functionality roles including landscape and so on, which grassland in Jeju possesses, using Dichotomous Choice Contingent Valuation Method (DC-CVM). Grassland is life cultural heritance of regional residents in Jeju. It has functions like development of favorable landscapes, maintenance of cultural heritage, and recreation/relaxation. Expectation from regional visitors shows that the existence and inheritance value of grassland is higher than we expected. According to the research that we had done from the people that had agreed to contribute grassland. moreover the public commercial value of grassland was not only $397{\sim}419$ billion won but also it will increase an economic gain in every year in Jeju. Therefore, preserving grassland that has multi-functional roles and values can lead to huge economic value in the future in Jeju. Moreover, farm households which are located in the grassland conservation area would be supported $15{\sim}31$ billion won in every year for grassland conservation but it is only $4{\sim}8%$ of the economic value of grassland i.e. $3,971{\sim}4190$ billion won. Thus, grassland preservation policy and plan can raise green-tour commercial value of Jeju area as a long-term inside measurement. Those will have to be propelled continuously.

  • With a purpose of finding out the influences of herbicide treatment on the forage value and ecological characteristics of grassland vegetations in the Rumex acetosella dominated pasture, this trial was arranged as a randomized block design with three treatments[1) Seeding(cntrol), 2)dicamba 4${\ell}$/ha+seeding+dicamba 4 ${\ell}$/ha and 3) dicamba 4${\ell}$/ha+lime+seeding+dicamba 4 ${\ell}$/ha], and conducted in Youngam, Jeonnam Province ftom June, 1995 to October, 1996. In the Rumex acetosella dominated pasture, the treatment of dicamba 4${\ell}$/ha+ lime+seeding+dicamba 4${\ell}$/ha was improved to the most desirable grassland vegetation with pasture plants of 87%. In the renovated grassland, the life forms of Hemicryptophytes increased greatly by 57.0%, on the other hand Geophytes was much more decreased by 56.8% than those of low productive grassland. The similarity coefficients between grassland vegetation groups were greatly affected by botanical composition. The forage value of standing crop in the renovated grassland with 6.56 was much more increased than low productive grassland with 2.76. The treatment of dicamba 4${\ell}$/ha+lime+ seedingdicamba 4${\ell}$/ha increased 2 1% of dry mattaer yield, and were high 18- 19% of energy (NEL and TDN) productivity than those of the control(seeding), respectively.

  • Barnyard millet is a short-lived tropical, short-term C4 plant and has superior vitality in humid conditions owing to its freshwater habitat. It shows strong adaptability to soils with poor drainage and low fertility, and efficiently competes with rice in paddy fields. Barnyard millet grain is used as feed in the Indian region and is a great source of dietary fiber, proteins, fats, vitamins, and some essential amino acids. Considering its high nutritional value and its potential as a food resource and fodder crop, various countries are showing interest in cultivating barnyard millet. However, in Korea, farm households have not yet recognized the benefits of cultivating barnyard millet, and research regarding this is scarce. In this review, the features of forage barnyard millet and its related research trends are discussed, with the aim of improving interest in this crop and promoting its cultivation.

  • Soil acidity or alkalinity are serious limitations for crop production. The purpose of this study was to clarify the negative effects of extreme pH stress (low and high) on alfalfa vegetative growth (VG) and biomass accumulation (BA). Two-week-old alfalfa seedlings were exposed to different pH (4.0, 4.5, 7.0, 8.0 and 8.5, respectively) levels for 72 hours. Alfalfa grown at pH 4.0 and 8.5 significantly reduced VG and BA, wherein as neutral pH (7.0) comparably exhibited better growth and biomass yield. These results indicate that extreme acidic or alkaline level are critical limiting factors for growth and biomass yield in alfalfa.
