This study aimed to investigate the biofilm formation, bacterial regrowth, and bacterial community structure in the granular-activated carbon (GAC) filter adsorbers (FAs) used in water treatment plants. In 2005 and 2006, raw water, settled water, GAC FA by depth, and filtered water were collected twice a year from water treatment plants (WTPs) B and S. The number of heterotrophic bacteria, including mesophilic and psychrophilic bacteria, in such collected waters was investigated along with the total number of coliforms therein. Heterotrophic bacteria were detected in most samples, mainly at the surface layers of the GAC FAs, and fewer such bacteria were found in the lower and bottom layers. An increase in the bacterial number, however, was observed in the samples from various depths of the GAC FAs in WTPs B and S compared with the surface layers. An increase in the bacterial number was also detected in the filtered water. This may indicate that there is a regrowth of the bacteria in the GAC FA. Considering, however, that heterotrophic bacteria were not found in the filtered water, it can be deduced that most bacteria are removed in the chlorination process. Coliforms were detected at the surface layer of the GAC FAs, but their regrowth was not observed. MicroLog systems were used to identify the bacteria community distribution. Eight genera and 14 species, including Pseudomonas spp., were detected in WTP B, and 8 genera and 9 species, including Aeromonas spp., in WTP S. Further studies are required to elucidate their role in the biofilms in water treatment processes.
Adsorption and biodegradation performance of tetracycline antibiotic compounds such as ttetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC), minocycline (MNC), chlortetracycline (CTC), doxycycline (DXC), meclocycline (MCC), demeclocycline (DMC) on granular activated carbon (GAC) and anthracite-biofilter were evaluated in this study. Removal efficiency of seven tetracycline antibiotic compounds showed 54%~97% by GAC adsorption process (EBCT: 5~30 min). The orders of removal efficiency by GAC adsorption were tetracycline, demeclocycline, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, doxytetracycline, meclocycline and minocycline. Removal efficiencies of seven tetracycline antibiotic compounds showed 1%~61% by anthracite biofiltration process (EBCT: 5~30 min). The highest biodegradable tetracycline antibiotic compound was minocycline, and the worst biodegradable tetracycline antibiotic compounds were oxytetracycline and demeclocycline.

Recently, our circumstances are threatened by an accident that leakage of under ground storage tank and illegal dumping of synthetic organic compounds at chemical plants and many treatment methods, Activated carbon adsorption, Ozonization, Membrane filtration and Photocatalystic oxidation, are developed to remove such a synthetic organic compounds. And it has reported that Activated carbon adsorption have a great removal efficiency to nondegradable matters and organic compounds which have a high molecular weight. Comparing with other adsorbents, Activated carbon adsorption have a worse efficiency when ad desorption speed is low. Thus improved type of adsorbents was invented and one of those is Activated Carbon Filter. The purpose of this study was getting information about adsorption characteristic phenol which can be applied Activated Carbon Fiber and Granular Activated Carbon. In detail, With comparing removal characteristics of phenol in the presence Humic Acid using Activated Carbon Fiber(ACF) and Granular Activated. Carbon(GAC), it is to certify an effective application of Activated Carbon Fiber. At the range of this study, Batch test, Isotherm adsorption test and Factorial analysis, following conclusion were obtained from the results of this study. Batch test was carried to know time of adsorption equilibrium. In this study about time of adsorption equilibrium by ACF was faster than GAC's, for developed micropore of ACF. From the result of phenol adsorption test, High removal rate of adsorption is shown at pH 5. The result of lsotherm adsorption test, it has represented that the Freundlich's isotherm is most suitable one in others, that a ACF's adsorption capacity is more excellent than GAC's. Adsorption of phenol exiting humic acid is decreased getting raised humic acid concentration. Since ACF's micropore is developed at this time, an effect of high molecular humic acid is lower. Factorial analysis was carried to know about Main effect which was injection dosage of adsorbent in the range of this study.
Pollutants removal and disinfection effect of secondary effluent from final settling tank of sewage treatment plant of W city were investigated in Loop Reactor using ordinary granular activated carbon(GAC) and GAC coated with silver nanoparticles. The results showed that the removal efficiency of $COD_{Mn}$, T-N and T-P using GAC with silver nanoparticles were higher than using the ordinary GAC. The removal efficiency of T-P using GAC with silver nanoparticles is 45.4% and that of T-P using ordinary GAC is 30.9% in the same case of the input amount of 20 g/L of GAC. The total califorms is reduced according to increasing input amount of GAC with silver nanoparticles and ordinary GAC. The disinfection efficiency of total coliforms in case of GAC with silver nanoparticles is much higher than that in case of ordinary GAC. For all experiments using the silver nanoparticles, the total coliforms is under 26 cfu/mL and this shows very excellent disinfection effect.

The adsorption characteristics of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in aqueous solution using granular activated carbon (GAC), activated carbon fiber (ACF), modified ACF (NaACF), and a mixture of GAC and NaACF (GAC/NaACF) have been studied. The surface properties, such as morphology, surface functional groups, and composition of various adsorbents were determined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements. The specific surface area, total pore volume, and pore size distribution were investigated using nitrogen adsorption, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) methods. In this study, NaACF showed a high adsorption capacity and rate for heavy metal ions due to the improvement of its ion-exchange capabilities by additional oxygen functional groups. Moreover, the GAC and NaACF mixture was used as an adsorbent to determine the adsorbent-adsorbate interaction in the presence of two competitive adsorbents.
Humic substances is accounted for for the largest proportion in natural organic matter(NOM) and NOM is widely distributed in varying concentration in all aquatic and soil. They can affect water quality adversely in several ways by contributing undesirable color, complexing with metal and yielding metal concentrations exceeding normal solubility. Ozonation is one of the efficient treatments for degradation of humic substances which cause some problems in water treatment. Especially, the combination of ozone and granular activated carbon was applied to degradation humic acid in aquatic system. The aim of this work to test the available of acid-treated granular activated carbon as catalyst in the ozonation of humic acid.
Biolgical activated carbon (BAC) processes are known to effectively remove organic pollutants in raw water, and biomass and attached bacterial species play an important role in removing process. In the present study, changes of bacterial biomass in granular activated carbon (GAC) process according to the depth and operating period were investigated. In addition, changes of bacterial biomass were also confirmed after UV exposure prior to the GAC process. Results from this this study showed that the bacterial biomass was decreased dependently according to the depth of GAC process. In case of UV pre-treatment, the bacterial biomass was declined significantly over the period of operation. However, changes in bacterial community were not shown during operation period without UV pre-treatment process. In conclusion, findings from this study may provide the useful information about the management of BAC process.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the backwashing frequency and method on the Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) in G WTP. A backwashing period was determined as 50 days and 60 days, respectively. Prior to Backwashing by head loss build, biomass concentration in effluent as constant and DO concentration was maintained more than 11.5 mg/L in GAC bed. Peak turbidity of backwashing water was 73.6~303 NTU. Mean turbidity of backwashing water at initial 9 minute of backwash operation was 50.7~82.8 NTU. After 30 minute backwashing operation, final turbidity reaches approximately 10 NTU. The frequency of backwashing and turbidity of backwashing water overtime were evaluated. At 20days of backwashing frequency, the peak turbidity was 73 NTU and 42 NTU respectively when 10% and 25% of expansion of GAC were applied. At 14 minute of backwashing time, it was observed that turbidity of 10% expansion of GAC was higher than that of 20% expansion.
This study accessed the adsorption characteristics of the 9 trihalomethanes (THMs) on coal-based granular activated carbon (GAC). The breakthrough appeared first for $CHCl_3$ and sequentially for $CHBr_2Cl$, $CHBr_3$, $CHCl_2I$, CHBrClI, $CHBr_2I$, $CHClI_2$, $CHBrI_2$, and $CHI_3$. The maximum adsorption capacity (X/M) for the 9 THMs with apparent breakthrough points ranged from $1,175{\mu}g/g$ (for $CHCl_3$) to $11,087{\mu}g/g$ (for $CHI_3$). Carbon usage rate (CUR) for $CHCl_3$ was 0.149 g/day, 5.5 times higher than for $CHCl_3$ (0.027 g/day).
Granular activated carbon (GAC) has been identified as a best available technology (BAT) by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) for removal disinfection by-product (DBP) precursors, such as dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON). Rapid small-scale column test (RSSCT) were used to investigate four types of carbon (F400, Norit1240, Norit40S, and Aquasorb1500) for their affinity to absorb natural organic matter (NOM). DOC, $UV_{254}$, and Total dissolved nitrogen (TON) concentrations were measured in the column effluent to track GAC breakthrough. DOC and $UV_{254}$ breakthrough occurred at around 3500 bed volumes (BVs) of operation for all GACs investigated. The $UV_{254}$ breakthrough curves showed 33% to 48% at 8000 BVs, when the DOC was 48% to 65%. All GACs showed greater removal in DOC than $UV_{254}$. The NORIT1240 GAC was determined to have the highest adsorption capacity for DOC and $UV_{254}$. The removal of nitrate (NOTN) had not broken through over BVs. The initial TON breakthrough curves were started around 50%, when the DOC breakthrough was only 10 % at 500 BVs. The curves were gradually increased after 3500 BVs and approximately 69% through 81% of TON breakthrough occurred at 8000 BVs. All of the GACs were able to remove TON, in the case of this investigation the majority of the TON was present as DON. Because nitrate nitrogen was seldom removed and ammonium nitrogen ($NH_3-N$) was not detected in the effluent from RSSCTs even though raw water. The carbon usage rate of DOC was from 2 to 6 times less than that of TON. The NORIT1240 GAC demonstrated the best performance in terms of DOC removal, while the F400 GAC was best in terms of TON removal. Excitation emission matrix(EEM) analysis was used to show that GAC adsorption successfully removed most of Humic-like DOC and Fulvic-like DOCs. However, soluble microbial product(SMP)-like DOC in the absence of raw water were detected in the NORIT40S and Aquasorb1500 GAC. The authors assumed that this results is due probably to the part of GAC in the RSSCT which was converted into biological activated carbon(BAC). To compare with organics removal by GAC according to preloading, the virgin GACs had readily accessible sites that were adsorbed DOC more rapidly than preloaded GACs, but the TDN removal had not showed differences between those GACs.
