To understand the mechanical properties of rock masses and intact rock in Korea, data from 4,280 in situ and laboratory tests from 107 tunnels on general national roads were analyzed. The mechanical properties (unit weight, cohesion, friction angle, modulus of deformation, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength, coefficient of permeability, and specific gravity) were analyzed by rock types and strength of rock in each rock type. The results of analysis, the mean specific gravity was highest in gneiss. The coefficient of permeability and Poisson's ratio show the highest mean values in granite and metamorphic rock, respectively. In addition, the unit weight, cohesion and friction angle in sedimentary rock, modulus of deformation, Young's modulus, uniaxial compressive strength and tensile strength in volcanic rock have the highest mean values. The values for each mechanical property showed wide ranges by the heterogeneity and anisotropy of rock masses in spite of detailed analysis by rock type and classification of rocks according to the strength.

The geomorphological environment of Suwon Basin consists of two great elements: mountains which surround the basin and plains and low relief hills by differential erosion of granitic area. Nothern and eastern parts of the basin surround with gneissic mountains(Mt. Kwangkyo), southern and western parts of the basin with granitic mountains(Mt. Chilbo, etc). The basin developed on granitic saprolites is composed of two types of sub-order geomorphic elements: flood plains alongside four river(Whangkuji-chon, Seoho-chon, Suwon-chon, Wonchonri-chon) and aligned hills and mounts between the river side plains. While the low down lands provided the spatial condition for the extention of downtown of Suwon, the gneissic mountains have played the positive roles by high ecological dam effects with stable supply of water and purification of air, etc.
This fundamental study analyzes the relationship between rock thermal properties and psychrometric properties in underground space and has a ultimate goal to develope technologies for predicting major environmental variables. The study is divided into 2 subjects (1) developement of a basic model for predicting temperature and humidity, (2) analysis of the validity of the model through application to a local underground storage space for military supplies. The basic model is built for the network of tunnel-shaped underground spaces. The model takes into account rock thermal properties and changes in moisture content in the air due to condensation/evaporation on the rock surface. Using lumped-parameter analytical method, heat flux from or to the surrounding rock is calculated and then the psychrometric properties(air quantity, pressure, temperature, humidity) are estimated through network simulation. The model can be utilized regardless of the tunnel type. The study site is a local storage space built in rock, mainly granite gneiss and quartz-porphyry. It is a U-shaped tunnel, 593.5m long and 6x6.5m wide. Relative humidity inside has to be strictly controlled under 55% to avoid erosion of a certain types of supplies stored in 6 chambers with the capacity of 300~1.000 ton. The thermal conductivity varies between 2.734 and 2.779W/m$^{\circ}C$ and the thermal diffusivity is in the range of 1.119 and $1.152{\times}10^{-6}\;m^2/s$ the specific heat between 910 and $920\;J/kg^{\circ}C$. Relative errors of the predicted values of dry/wet temperature and relative humidity are 0.8~3.0%, 0~7.5% and 0~7.0%, respectively. Apparent errors associated with the rock surface temperature seems to be partly due to the intrinsic limitations in the infrared thermometer used in this study.

This paper is used in a recent civil engineering field in three-dimensional laser-meter tiles using thermal imaging cameras for the weathered rock slopes precisely measured indirectly, to the degree that began in the will. In the field is difficult to access the degree of weathering of the rock slope to the existing direct way to compensate for the shortcomings of 3D Terrestrial Laser Scanner and weathering characteristics of rocks using thermal imaging cameras to get the information to analyze the degree of rock weathering is. Intensity of 3D TLS and the thermal camera with image analysis to analyze the degree of weathering of bedrock in the field of core drilling targeting indoor laboratory tests were analyzed through the study. Granite, gneiss, sandstone, much of the cancerous samples, each experiment has a 40 per category, each of which 30 were used to analyze the data collected. That degree of rock weathering, the rock, depending on the strength of the Intensity values can change, depending on the level of thermal imaging camera, also weathered the changes in temperature could see. Intensity is the strength of weak rocks, the more value decrease, the temperature of the thermal imaging camera through the swell Intensity and notice that the temperature had an inverse relationship. Intensity value of the low strength of weak rock, but the value came out of the rocks have been proved to be largely dependent on the contrast. The contrast of the surface rocks are weathered dark Intensity values lower temperature to swell the contrary, the degree of weathering can be distinguished.
Simple estimating method of rock drilling and blasting work size is necessary to apply as a guidance of general road plan and a cost analysis of mountain forest road construction. For this work study, 11 cycles were divided in 5km route at Hyeonnammeon Yangyang-gun and the mountain slope at every 20m interval was measured. During working days all kind of works concerned on drilling and blasting was investigated in every cycle. Depending on the simple work study results it's work size can bef estimated with high correlation between drilling length in meter and frequency percentage of mountain slope more than 70%. With total drilling length known the machinery hours, drillers and explosive quantify can be estimated by the regression with high correlation. Estimation of drilling and blasting work by mountain slope gradient in road route is proposed like table 5 with estimating value of machinery hour, drillers and explosive in granite gneiss region.
The measurement of in-situ stress is essential to estimate the ground displacement and the stress distribution of a tunnel and an underground structure. In this study, the in-situ stress distribution of the Southern Korean peninsula was re-evaluated by the new 380 in-situ data which were determined by overcoring and hydrofracturing methods, and the three-din erosional numerical analysis of tunnelling was performed. The results of in-situ stress distribution show that the distribution of horizontal stress tends to be more irregular in metamorphosed(gneiss) and granite areas than in sedimentary and volcanic areas. The ratio of horizontal to vertical stresses(K-value) in volcanic area is less than 1 below the depth of 150m. The direction and magnitude of three dimensional in-situ stresses were shown simultaneously in a figure for the first time in Korea. The three-dimensional numerical analysis of tunnelling indicates that the orientation and magnitude of displacement around a tunnel are controlled mainly by the difference between the maximum and minimum horizontal stresses.
Multi-stage shear test has been performed using joint specimens of gneiss, granite and shale to investigate the influence of micro-scale asperity change on the shear strength of joint plane. For each shear test asperity degradation characteristics of joint specimens of different joint surface strength have been analyzed by utilizing the optimum asperity parameter which can reflect the sequential asperity degradation. Elevation of joint surface profile has been measured and both the changes of asperity parameters and micro-scale asperity distribution have been investigated. Two distinctive variation modes of cohesion and friction angle have been delineated and major cause of shear strength parameter change has been analyzed by considering the micro-scale asperity angle change resulting from the abrasion, fracturing and regeneration of micro-scale asperities. Effects of micro-scale asperity variation on the joint shear strength have been also investigated.
Ssangjeon tungsten ore deposits is a complex pegmatite deposits embedded along the contact between pre-Cambrian Buncheon granite gneiss and amphibolite. This pegmatite vein developed 2 km along the strike and thickness varies from 10m to 40m. Mineral constituent of the normal pegmatite are quartz, microcline, plagioclase, muscovite, biotite, tourmaline and garnet. The vein paragenesis is complicated by repeated deposition of quartz but three distinct depositional stage can be recognized. Quartz A stage is the stage of the earliest milky white quartz deposition as a rock forming mineral of normal pegmatite. Quartz B stage is the stage of gray to dark gray quartz replace earlier formed normal pegmatite minerals. Quartz C stage is the stage of latest white translucent massive quartz replace quartz A and B. Tungsten ore minerals and other sulfide minerals were precipitated during quartz B stage. Ore minerals are ferberite and scheelite. Minor amount of molybdenite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, pentlandite, bismuthinite, native bismuth and marcasite accompanied. Fluid inclusion in quartz A and B are gaseous inclusions and liquid inclusions are contained in quartz C as a primary inclusions. Salinity of inclusions in quartz A and B ranges from 4.5 to 9.5 wt. % and from 5.1 to 6.0 wt. % equivalent NaCl respectively. Homogenization temperature of quartz A; quartz B and quartz C ranges from 415 to $465^{\circ}C$, from 397 to $441^{\circ}C$ and from 278 to $357^{\circ}C$. $CO_2$ content of the ore fluid increased at the ends of quartz B stage.
Baehuryeong tunnel connects Chuncheon with Hwacheon in Kangwon, Korea, This tunnel is a single tunnel with 5,057 m long and two bidirectional lanes which will be extended into low lanes in the future. The estimated construction period of Baehuryeong tunnel is approximately 55 months. This tunnel will become the longest bidirectional roadway tunnel in Korea. Compared to a twin tunnel, a bidirectional single tunnel has two major disadvantages with regard to the ventilation system and ease of escape during fire. For these reasons, a service tunnel and the transverse ventilation system are planned first time in Korea. In case of fire, the tunnel ventilation design aims to maintain a smoke free layer for passenger evacuation. The geology of Baehuryeong tunnel site is mainly composed of gneiss and granite. Baehuryeong fault is a mainly large scale fault which stands vertical and parallels with tunnel direction. The influenced zone of this fault is within 70 m. Baehuryeong tunnel was designed that it was separated with the distance of more than 100 m from Baehuryeong fault for its safety.
This study was performed to analyze test results on drying shrinkage for concrete specimens mixed with various constituents in concrete mixes. Test variables are coarse aggregate types(Limestone, Sandstone, Granite, Andesite, Gneiss), fine aggregate types(natural sand, crushed sand) and cement amounts(normal strength, high strength). Epoxy coating of(U&V-H(A,B)) was applied onto the specimen surface to simulate diverse volume surface ratios(22.2, 40, 85.7, 150, 200, 300) with different specimen sizes. The experiments had been executed during 1,014 days at a condition of $20^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity of 60% in environmental chambers. Test results showed that shrinkage strain from the specimen equivalent to real pavement decreased to 39% compared to the standard specimen recommended by KS. Test results also showed that shrinkage strain of the specimen mixed with Limestone was 56~76% of that with Sandstone, thus Limestone mix seems to be suitable to the concrete pavement.
