  • Austenitic stainless steel has been investigated widely for creep strength of heat resistant material and effects of grain sizes due to various solution treatment time under constant temperature. It was studied that effects of grain sizes subject to solution treatment temperature 1100.deg. C, 1125.deg. C, 1175.deg. C, 1250.deg C, and 1300.deg. C respectively on the creep strength, fracture behaviour and fractography of SUS 316 stainless steel. The experimental results obtained were as follows. 1. The optimum grain size for the maximum creep strength did not vary with creep testing temperatures and stress levels. 2. Among various grain sizes due to different solution treatment temperature, the optimum grain size for the creep strength was found 0.044mm. Also the size showed the minimum initial strain regardless creep temperature. 3. Garofalo's equation of creep rupture life was applied well to SUS 316 stainless steel. 4. The fractography of optimum size was ductile intergranular fracture of dimple type and showed along with the increase of grain size intergranular fracture of w type.

  • There are some repels in which they studied on the change of acid-consuming capacity of aluminium hydroxide resulted from the passing of time. However, the relationship between grain sizes(particle sizes) and the acid-consuming capacity of dried aluminium hydroxide gel was not been studied. And studies on the grain sizes of aluminium hydroxide gel qualified by pharmacopoeia of Korea has not been reported. For the purpose of studying these two problems, the author prepared two-kinds of aluminium hydroxide gel as follows : $Na_2OAl_2O_3+CO_2------{\longrightarrow}Al(OH)_3{\cdots}{\cdots}{\cdots}$sample 1 $Al_2(SO_4)_318H_2O+6NaHCO_3{\longrightarrow}Al(OH)_3{\cdots}{\cdots}{\cdots}$sample 2 Both of sample 1 and 2 are found to be amorphous by X-ray diffraction methods, and their acid-consuming capacities were determined by the method of pharmacopeia of Korea. The grain size was measured by X-ray diffraction method, the particle sizes observed by electron microscopy, and the change of acid-consuming capacity with passing of time was determined by the method of pharmacopoeia of Korea. The results of these studies are summerized as follows: 1. The grain size was linearly enlarged as the time goes by. The aluminium hydroxide gel gradually crystallized in a certain period of time. 2. The acid-consuming capacity was in exponential function, decreased as the grain size of them enlarged. 3. One particle consists of tens of grains.4. Grinding the Sample obtained in any period of testing time in mortar did not change both their grain size and their acid-consuming capacity. 5. The grain size of dried aluminium hydroxide gel ought to be micronized less than $100{\AA}$ for maintaining the ability such as consumes 250m1 of 0. 1N-HC1 solution per Is of $Al(OH)_3$ described in pharmacopoeia of Korea.

  • The phase stability of tetragonal phase in Y-TZP was investigated in terms of the distribution of grain sizes and heat-treating atmosphere. Y-TZP with various grain sizes were prepared using duration time at $1600^{\circ}C$ as experimental parameter. Accumulated grain size distributions were built from the SEM micrographs and the amount of tetragonal phase were measured using XRD. Both results were compared to determine the critical grain size before and after heat-treatment in vacuum. The critical grain size drastically decreased compared with the small increase of average grain size due to the autocatalytic effect which critically affects the tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation. After heat-treatment in reductive atmosphere critical grain size relatively increased due to the stabilization of tetragonal phase. The formation of oxygen vacancies during heat-treatment was ascribed to the increase of stability.

  • The effect of sintering atmosphere on the grain sizes and phase distributions in 3Y-ZrO2 and 8Y-ZrO2 was investigated O2 and N2 were used as sintering atmospheres. In the case of 3Y-ZrO2 the sintered density was higher in N2 than in O2 while in the case of 8Y-ZrO2 contrary results were obtained. The observation can be explained by the nitrogen solubility into the zirconia lattice. That is nitrogen gas can behave as a diffusive gas contrary to the behavior in other oxides depending on the amount of Y2O3. In 3Y-ZrO2 tetragonal phase was retained at room temperature irrespective of sintering atmospheres. Grain sizes of two specimens were below 2㎛ and larger in O2 thin in N2 Under a given stress the transformability of tetragonal phase into monoclinic phase was higher in O2 than N2. The results are discussed on the basis of an effect of the grain size and non-transformable ttragonal(t') phase.

  • The aim of this paper is to consider the effect of annealing on the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of electroplated Invar Fe-Ni alloy. The CTE of the as-electroplated alloy is lower than those of alloys annealed at $400^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$. XRD peaks become sharper as the as-electroplated alloy is annealed, which means the grain growth. The average grain sizes of as-electroplated and as-annealed alloys at $400^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$ are 10 nm, 70 nm, and $2{\mu}m$, respectively, as determined by TEM and EBSD analyses. The CTE variation for the various grain sizes after annealing may come from the magnetostriction effect, which generates strain due to changes in the magnetization state of the alloys. The thermal expansion coefficient is considered to be affected by nano grain size in electroplated Fe-Ni Invar alloys. As grain size decreases, ferromagnetic forces might change to paramagnetic forces. The effect of lattice vibration damping of nano grain boundaries could lead to the decrease of CTE.

  • Y-TZP/Ce-TZP ceramics having relative sintered densities of>95% average grain sizes of 0.36$\mu\textrm{m}$ microhar-dness of 1150 kg/mm2 fracture strength of 390-830 MPa and toughness of 6.4-10.2 MPa$.$mm1/2 were prepared by conventional sintering of 3 mol% Y2O3-ZrO2 and 12 mol% CeO2-ZrO2 powders at 1400 and 1500$^{\circ}C$ The average grain sizes of Y-TZP/Ce-TZP ceramics were mainly governed by those of Ce-TZP. White increasing Ce-TZP content toughness increased while microhardness and fracture strength decreased. With comparing microhardness and toughness fracture strength was more sensitive on not only grain size but also other factors such as microstructural and compositional variations. The densification of Y-TZP/Ce-TZP cermaics was not greatly affected by composition and soaking time at temperature over 1400$^{\circ}C$ With increasing CE-TZP content the stability of t-ZrO2 decreased under thermal aging in air whereas increased in hydrothermal atmosphere and aqueous solution.

  • Colour consistency is an important consideration when selecting pigments used on works of art. In this study, we analyse the colour difference between two sets of synthetic blue glass pigments acquired at least 8 years apart from the same manufacturer in Japan. The old pigment set (unused, dry powder with four different grain sizes) appears faded compared to the new set. These pigments are made available for artistic use, commonly in Nihonga or Japanese paintings. Raman spectroscopy and SEM-EDS results characterize these pigments as cobalt aluminate spinels dissolved in leaded glaze, a special class of complex coloured inorganic pigments that is not well-understood in the field of conservation. Colour difference between the old and new pigments with four different grain sizes were quantified by analysing photomicrographs with image analysis software. Blue pigments with coarse and extremely fine grains showed significant colour change compared to pigments with medium and fine grain sizes. The high occurrence of crystallites in the finer grains give a final colour that is bluer and lighter. Possible causes for the colour difference including manufacturing methods and storage environment are discussed.

  • Characteristics of nanocrystalline materials are known substantially dependent on the microstructure such as grain size, crystal orientation, and grain boundary. Thus it is desired to have systematic characterization methods on the various nanomaterials with complex geometries, especially in low dimensional nature. One of the interested nanomaterials would be a pure two-dimensional material, graphene, with superior mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. In this study, mechanical properties of "polycrystalline" graphene were numerically investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. Subdomains with various sizes would be generated in the polycrystalline graphene during the fabrication such as chemical vapor deposition process. The atomic models of polycrystalline graphene were generated using Voronoi tessellation method. Stress strain curves for tensile deformation were obtained for various grain sizes (5~40 nm) and their mechanical properties were determined. It was found that, as the grain size increases, Young's modulus increases showing the reverse Hall-Petch effect. However, the fracture strain decreases in the same region, while the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) rather shows slight increasing behavior. We found that the polycrystalline graphene shows the reverse Hall-Petch effect over the simulated domain of grain size (< 40 nm).

  • In data parallel programs incurring high cache locality, the choice of grain sizes affects cache performance. Though the grain sizes chosen provide fair load balance among processors, the grain sizes that ignore underlying caching effect result in address interferences between grains allocated to a processor. These address interferences appear to have a negative impact on the cache locality, since they result in cache conflict misses. To address this problem, we propose a best grain size driven from a cache size and the number of processors based on direct mapped cache's characteristic. Since the proposed method does not map the grains to the same location in the cache, cache conflict misses are reduced. Simulation results show that the proposed best grain size substantially improves the performance of tested data parallel programs through the reduction of cache misses on direct-mapped caches.
