The aim of this paper is to consider the effect of annealing on the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of electroplated Invar Fe-Ni alloy. The CTE of the as-electroplated alloy is lower than those of alloys annealed at $400^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$. XRD peaks become sharper as the as-electroplated alloy is annealed, which means the grain growth. The average grain sizes of as-electroplated and as-annealed alloys at $400^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$ are 10 nm, 70 nm, and $2{\mu}m$, respectively, as determined by TEM and EBSD analyses. The CTE variation for the various grain sizes after annealing may come from the magnetostriction effect, which generates strain due to changes in the magnetization state of the alloys. The thermal expansion coefficient is considered to be affected by nano grain size in electroplated Fe-Ni Invar alloys. As grain size decreases, ferromagnetic forces might change to paramagnetic forces. The effect of lattice vibration damping of nano grain boundaries could lead to the decrease of CTE.
This work describes a method for determining material parameters included in recrystallization and grain growth models of metallic materials. The focus is on the recrystallization and grain growth models of Ni-Fe based superalloy, Alloy 718. High temperature compression test data at different strain, strain rate and temperature conditions were chosen to determine the material parameters of the model. The critical strain and dynamically recrystallized grain size and fraction at various process conditions were generated from the microstructural analysis and strain-stress relationships of the compression tests. Also, isothermal heat treatments were utilized to fit the material constants included in the grain growth model. Verification of the determined material parameters is carried out by comparing the average grain size data obtained from other compression tests of the Alloy 718 specimens with the initial grain size of $59.5{\mu}m$.

A micromechanical model is presented for superplasticity in which heterogeneous microstructures are coupled with deformation behavior. The effects of initial distributions of grain size, and their evolutions on the mechanical properties can be predicted by the model. Alternative stress rate models such as Jaumann rate and rotation incremental rate have been employed to analyze uniaxial loading and simple shear problems and the appropriate modeling was studied on the basis of hypoelasticity and elasto-viscoplasticity. The model has been implemented into finite element software so that full process simulation can be carried out. Tests have been conducted on Ti-6Al-4V alloy and the microstructural features such as grain size, distributions of grain size, and volume fraction of each phase were examined for the materials that were tested at different strain rates. The experimentally observed stress-strain behavior on a range of initial grain size distributions has been shown to be correctly predicted. In addition, the effect of volume fraction of the phases and concurrent grain growth were analyzed. The dependence of failure strain on strain rate has been explained in terms of the change in mechanism of grain growth that occurs with changing strain rate.

In this study, the fabrication of ultra fine grained Mo bulk was conducted. $MoO_3$ nanopowders were prepared by a high energy ball-milling process and then reduced at the temperature of $800^{\circ}C$ without holding time in $H_2$ atmosphere. The particle size of Mo nanopowder was ~150 nm and grain size was ~40 nm. The two-step process was employed for the sintering of Mo nanopowder to obtain fine grain size. The densification over 90% could be obtained by the two-step sintering with a grain size of less than 660 nm. For higher density, modified two-step sintering was designed. 95% of theoretical density with the grain size of 730 nm was obtained by the modified two-step sintering.

This study tries to reveal transport mechanism and origin of components from fluvial terrace deposits in Danyang and Geum River basins, through grain size partitioning using the Weibull function. Grain size parameters suggest that the samples analyzed in this study can be grouped into the coarse, fine and medium samples. The coarse samples are partitioned into three or four components. More than 65% of the coarse samples consist of components by suspension and saltation by fluvial process, while components by attachment to coarse grains or aggregates and/or by individual grains deposited under non-flow condition are also found in the coarse samples. The fine samples consist of four components and components found in loess deposits in Korea occupy >70%, suggestive of the same transport mechanisms (westerlies and winter monsoon) and common source areas with loess deposits in Korea. However, components by aeolian process from local sources as well as by fluvial process are also found in the fine samples. The medium samples are partitioned into components with similar sizes to the coarse and fine samples, respectively.
The objective of this paper is to illustrate that kriging can provide an effective framework both for integrating remote sensing data and for uncertainty modeling through a case study of sediment grain size mapping with remote sensing data. Landsat TM data which show reasonable relationships with grain size values are used as secondary information for sediment grain size mapping near the eastern part of Anmyeondo and Cheonsuman bay. The case study results showed that uncertainty attached to prediction at unsampled locations was significantly reduced by integrating remote sensing data through the analysis of conditional variance from conditional cumulative distribution functions. It is expected that the kriging-based approach presented in this paper would be efficient integration and analysis methodologies for any environmental thematic mapping using secondary information as well as sediment grain size mapping.
Abnormal grain growth in alumina was investigated during sinter-HIP process for better understanding of pressure effect on microstructural development. Abnormal grain growth of monolithic alumina was observed near surface region rather than interior region of specimen. Finite element analysis was used to estimate the pressure distribution developed in the specimen. Pressure distribution analysis was in good agreement with grain size distributjion in the specimen. The results of finite element analysis provided that abnormal grain growth monolithic alumina was resulted from the inhomogeneous pressure distribution in the specimen. MgO addition in alumina was effective for the suppression of abnormal grain growth in alumina under inhomogeneous pressure distribution during sinter-HIP process.
A field survey and Landsat ETM+ image acquisition carried out simultaneously. Using these data, we attempted to establish relationships between tidal flat environmental factors and reflectance observed by ETM+, and to set up a new critical grain size useful for optical remote sensing. Although the grain size of 4 $\Phi$ has been conventionally used as a critical size by sedimentologists, the correlation with optical reflectance was very low. Instead, the grain size of 2 $\Phi$ showed a relatively high correlation coefficient, 0.699, with ETM+ band 4, except near tidal channels in upper tidal flat. We concluded that the grain size of 2 $\Phi$ would be better to use for a critical grain size in Gomso Bay. The grain size also correlated well with moisture content having a correlation coefficient of -0.811 when the 2 $\Phi$ criterion was used. The results of factor analysis showed moisture content was more important parameter than topographic relief, and they were different from German tidal flats in which topographic relief was the prior factor This can be explained by finer grain composition of the Gomso bay tidal flat. In short, moisture content and topography as well as grain size should be considered in tidal flat remote sensing.

This study presents a new computational model to analyze the grain deformation in a polycrystalline aggregate in a discrete manner and based directly in the underlying physical micro-mechanisms. As a result, specific characteristics have to be considered for the numerical analysis. The grains and grain boundary elements are introduced to model individual grains and grain boundary facets, respectively, to consider the size effects in the micro forming. The constitutive description of the grain elements accounts for the rigid-plastic and the grain boundary elements for elastic relationships. The capability of the proposed approach is demonstrated through application of grain element and grain boundary element in the micro forming.

In this study, four kinds of $Si_3N_4$-based ceramic cutting tools with different sintering time were fabricated to investigate the relation among mechanical properties, grain size and tool life. They were used to turn gray cast iron at a cutting speed of 330m/min and depth of cut of 0.5mm and 1mm in dry, continuos cutting conditions. Multiple linear regression model was used to determine the relations among the mechanical property, grain size and the density. It was found that the combination of hardness and fracture toughness showed a good relation with tool life. It was also shown that hardness was the most important single element for the tool life.
