The experiment about the mixed sowing of two different growth type varieties of barley-Buheung and Suwon#18-has been conducted to determine the competition effect between two varieties, and its results are as follows: 1. Buheung-long stem variety-showed higher survived ratio than Suwon#18-short stem variety- and that tendency was significant under the high fertilized condition. 2. When tow varieties-Buheung and Suwon#18-were sowed together, the culm length of Buheung was shorter than the single planted Buheung and that of Suwon#18 was onger than the single planted Suwon#18, however, the panicle length showed the opposite tendency to the culm length variation. 3. The number of panicles and the number of grains did not show any differences among the treatments. 4. In case of the single sowing, Suwon#18 showed higher grain yield under the common fertilized condition but Buheung showed significantly increased grain yield under the heavy fertilized condition, however, in case of the mixed towing of two varieties, the grain yield was significantly increased in heavy fertilized plots than standard fertilization. 5. The competition power was significantly superior in Buheung to Suwon#18 and this tendency was rather definite according to the fertilizer application.

A new winter wheat(Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar "Hwanggeumal" was developed by the NICS(National Institute of Crop Science), RDA(Rular Dvelopment Administraion) in 2019. It was derived from a cross of the "Jokyoung//Kauz/Rayon" and "Jopoom" in 2008. It had advanced generation through bulk and pedigree method for seven years and designated line name "Jeonju398" after AYT(Advance Yield Trial) test for two years. And "Hwangeumal" was designated variety name after RYT(Regional Yield Trial) test in eight locations around Korea for two years from 2018 to 2019. Its heading date was April 19 and maturity date was May 31, which were similar to Jokyoung. "Hwanggeumal" had shorter plant height(75 cm) and spike length(7.1 cm), spikes per m2(699) and lower 1,000 grain weight(44.2 g) than "Jokyoung"(78 cm, 8.2 cm, 776, 46.6 g, respectively). "Hwanggeumal" was showed weak to winter hardiness and susceptible to powdery mildew but tolerance to PHS(Pre-harvest sprouting). The average grain yield in the AYT was 6.2 ton/ha, which were 10% more than "Jokyoung" And in the RYT was 5.1 ton/ha in upland and 4.4 ton/ha in paddy field, which were lower than "Jokyoung", respectively. "Hwanggeumal"s flour yield (71.4%) and flour lightness (91.82) showed similar to "Jokyung" and higher protein content (14.0%) and gluten content (10.3%) and SDS-sedimentation volume (60.3ml). These result showed that the "Hwanggeumal" dough strength of flour is strong than "Jokyung". "Hwanggeumal"s HMW-GS(High molecular weight gluten subunits) composition are Glu-D1 (5+10), Granule-bound starch synthase(GBSS) composition are Wx-A1 (a), Wx-B1 (b), Wx-D1 (a) and composition of Puroindolines are Pina-D1(a), Pinb-D1(b).

Dredging and land reclamation works has actively carried out for the efficient use of land and secure of agricultural and industrial site. During the reclamation, a portion of landfills are lost from the desired location due to a variety of causes. However, these causes has been rarely studied, and water flow velocity has a great influence on the movement of landfills. For the economical and efficient reclamation, it is important to predict the movement of landfills in water. In this paper, an experimental study was carried out to investigate the deposition distance according to the flow velocity and soil grain size. We have made a large open-channel apparatus that can reproduce a laminar flow, and the deposition test was carried out on the four grain size (0.638, 1.425, 3.375, 7.125 mm) and four flow velocity (0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.67 m/s) with high definition video recording. As a results, average deposition distance increased with the flow velocity, and its relationship is shown linearly. For the grain size, the average deposition distance were drastically increased as the grain size becomes smaller.

Wheat (Triticum asetivum L.) is one of the major grain crops worldwide. The reduced productivity ascribed by adverse environment is increasing the risk of food security. Wheat cultivars have been actively released by public side since 1960s in Korea. Each variety has been developed for superior regional adaptation, pest resistance and mostly high yield. Heat stress tolerance is one of the major parameters that threaten wheat production in Korea. Heat stress during grain filling period has been conceived as critical level and directly influences on wheat production. We evaluated 11 common wheat cultivars ("Baegjoong", "Dajung", "Goso", "Hanbaek", "Jokyoung", "Joeun", "Jopum", "Keumgang", "Olgeuru", "Sinmichal", "Uri") that were exposed to abnormally high temperature during the grain filling period. Each plant was grown well in a pot containing "Sunshine #4" soil in controlled phytotron facility set on $20^{\circ}C$ and 16 h photoperiod. At 9 day-after-anthesis (DAA9), plants were subjected to a gradual increase in temperature from $20^{\circ}C$ to $33^{\circ}C$ and maintained constantly at $33^{\circ}C$ for 5 days. After the treatment, plants were subjected to gradual decrease to normal temperature ($20^{\circ}C$) and continue to grow till harvest. Seeds were harvested from each tiller/plant. Total chlorophyll contents decrease level as well as grain parameters were measured to evaluate varietal tolerance to heat stress. We also divide each spike into five regions and evaluate grain characteristics among the regions in each spike. The obtained results allow us to classify cultivars for heat stress tolerance. The pedigree information showed that typical wheat lines provide either tolerance or susceptible trait to their off-springs, which enable breeders to develop heat stress tolerance wheat by appropriate parental choice.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the main agricultural crops in Asian countries, including Korea, and is considered as the most important staple food in the world. Rice is also processed into flour, which is consumed through various foods such as cake, noodle, bread, and confectionary. Rice flour quality is highly dependent on variety and milling conditions. Producing rice flour with fine particles is more difficult than wheat flour because of its grain hardness. The Korean rice varieties representing different amylose contents were selected for this study. The relationship between the morphological and starch characteristics of rice kernels and the appropriate varieties for producing good-quality, dry-milled rice flour were examined. The hardness of the rice kernels was determined by measuring the pressure at the grain breakage point. The damaged starch content of the rice flour was determined using a Megazyme starch damage assay kit. The particle-size distribution of the rice flour was measured as the volume-base distribution using a laser-diffraction particle size analyzer. The mean particle-size distribution of the dry-milled flour obtained was between $65.3{\sim}105.1{\mu}m$ among the rice varieties. The opaque, non-glutinous, Seolgaeng rice demonstrated a narrow peak at the fine size, whereas the entire particle-distribution range for other varieties was wide. Seolgaeng exhibited significantly lower damaged starch content of dry-milled flour than the other varieties (p < 0.05). Seolgaeng showed lowest in energy consumption on rice flour production with 200 mesh particle size. Accordingly, it is possible to produce dry-milled rice flour which is similar to wheat flour that would considerably reduce milling costs.

The physical characteristics of the major varieties of perilla were analyzed to use as basic data for the design of a high-quality, high-efficiency perilla cleaner and stone separator. Because the size, thousand-grain weight, angle of repose, angle of friction, bulk density and terminal velocity of perilla have significant differences according to the perilla variety, the different of characteristics by variety should be considered for performance improvement of a perilla cleaner and stone separator. Therefore the cleaner and stone separator using a sieve could be improved by the application of a detachable sieve or by using equipment such as a 2 - 3 stage sieve and regulating the slope. Moreover, because differences in the terminal velocity occur due to the differences in the size and thousand-grain weight according to the perilla variety, a blower with an adjustable fan speed was considered for the design of the improved cleaner. Additionally, it was shown that the length of perilla has the greatest correlation based on a comparison of the coefficients of the other characteristics. Accordingly, the length of perilla could be used as a major factor for the fine adjustment and parts replacement of the device. These results can be used as basic data for a high-quality, high-efficiency perilla cleaner and stone separator. In the future, the development of the machine and follow-up studies based on the basic data are needed to determine the optimized operating conditions and mechanism of action.
The consumption of a wide variety of food groups is considered one of the key components of nutritional adequacy. The 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Koreans includes the consumption of a variety of foods from diverse food groups as a component of a normal diet. A survey was conducted to evaluate the relationship between the dietary diversity of food groups and nutrient intake in elderly patients (age 65 and above) at a rural area in Korea (Inje). 296 subjects (111 male and 185 female) were probed in a 3 day 24-recall dietary survey. Subjects were grouped according to food group intake frequency, based on six food groups (grain, meat/fish/legume/egg, vegetable, fat/oil, dairy, fruit). Nutritional quality was evaluated according to the numbers of nutrients under EAR (Estimated Average Requirements), and MAR (mean adequacy ratios). The frequency of elderly subjects consuming a meat/fish/legumes/egg food group less than once per day was 29.4%. The frequency of elderly subjects consuming fat/oil food group less than once per day was 65.8%. The percentage of subjects who did not eat dairy food was 88.8%, and that of subjects who did not eat fruit was 57.5%. A stepwise multiple regression analysis was used to develop models relating nutritional quality to possible food group intake frequency factors. Using the number of nutrients under EAR as a dependent variable, the meat/fish/legume/egg food group intake frequency explained 9.9% of variance, followed by the grain group, fat/oil group, dairy group, and vegetable and fruit group (Model $R^2$=0.260). For mean nutrient adequacy ratio as a dependent variable, the model $R^2$ was 0.326. The results of this study suggest that a highly varied diet in elderly might be associated with better nutritional quality, as assessed by nutrient intake. Accordingly, dietary guidelines should take into consideration nutritional characteristics in order to improve intake from all major food groups and to provide a variety of foods in the diet.
This study was conducted to investigate methane emission among rice ecotypes in paddy soil (Jeonbug series). The varieties of rice involved early maturing short-grain variety, Samcheonbyeo, middle maturing variety, Hawsungbyeo and late maturing variety, Dongjinbyeo. The seasonal change of methane flux was high from ear formation stage to heading stage. It was found that the methane flux was tended to be lower in early maturing variety than in the mid-to-late maturing variety. The plots without rice straw reduced methane emission as much as 46% relative to rice straw application. The methane emission rate through rice stem was highly correlated with temperature fluctuation. Methane emission on ecotypes by rice straw application was 0.394 g $m^{-2}day^{-1}$ in early maturing variety (Samcheonbyeo), 0.407 g $m^{-2}day^{-1}$ in mid maturing variety(Hawsungbyeo), 0.411 g $m^{-2}day^{-1}$ in late maturing variety(Dongjinbyeo).

Lodging is a serious issue in rice production, because it drastically decreases the biomass production and grain yield. Since the Green Revolution, the lodging resistance has been increased by lowering the moment of above-ground parts due to the short culm by the semi-dwarf gene sd1. However, it has been pointed out that sd1 alone has suppressive effects for biomass production and yield. To increase rice yield, the long-culm and large panicle type varieties with a superior lodging resistance need to be developed. To improve the lodging resistance and yield of these type varieties, it would be effective to identify novel alleles for these traits underlying natural variations in rice and to pyramid these alleles to a single rice variety. In order to perform this strategy, we have developed new rice lines derived from crosses among varieties with superior alleles. At first, TULT-gh-5-5 was selected from a cross between strong culm and high biomass variety Leaf Star and high-yielding variety Takanari, and TUAT-32HB was selected from a cross between high-yielding variety Akenohoshi and Takanari. Then, we developed the super thick-culm and super grain-bearing line, LTAT-29 derived from a cross between TULT-gh-5-5 and TUAT-32HB. In the current study, to identify the QTLs and genes relating to the strong culm and the high yield of LTAT-29, we performed QTL analysis using SNPs markers with $F_2$ population derived from a cross between LTAT-29 and Takanari. LTAT-29 has never lodged throughout the growth period despite it had long culms and heavy panicles. LTAT-29 had a larger outer diameter of the culm and twice the size of the section modulus than Takanari. As a result, the bending moment at breaking of LTAT-29 was significantly larger than that of Takanari. Brown rice yield of LTAT-29 was $9.2t\;ha^{-1}$ about 10% higher than that of Takanari due to the larger number of spikelets per panicle. LTAT-29 had a greater number of secondary branches per panicle. In the $F_2$ population between LTAT-29 and Takanari, we found continuous frequency distributions in the section modulus and the spikelet number per panicle. Two QTLs increased the section modulus by the alleles of LTAT-29 were detected on Chr.1L and Chr.2L. One QTL increased the spikelet number per panicle of Takanari by the allele of LTAT-29 was detected on Chr.1L, and two QTLs increased the number of secondary branches per panicle by the alleles of LTAT-29 were detected on Chr.1L and Chr.4L. It was found that the alleles of these QTLs were the japonica type originated from Leaf Star or Akenohoshi. The novel QTLs for the traits related to super thick-culm and super grain-bearing and their combinations could be utilized for improving the lodging resistance and yield in rice varieties.
Rice quality is considered to have two general meanings; 1) milling, cooking, and processing quality, which refer to suitability of the grain for a particular end-use; and 2) physical quality, which means cleanliness, soundness, and freedom from foreign materials. Grain type is associated with specific milling, cooking, and processing characteristics. Thus, this experiment was conducted to classify the grain type categories and marketing grades for Korean leading rice varieties. Length: width ratio of brown rice kernel ranged from 1.57 to 2.25 and most of varieties belonged to short grain except Tongil type rice varieties. Mean of length: width ratio of brown rice kernel was 1.77 and coefficient of variance was 4.79% in short grain type varieties. Grain shape could be further classified into 5 types by length:width ratio of brown rice kernel; 1 type(less than 1.75), 2 type(1.76∼1.80), 3 type(1.81∼1.90), 4 type(1.91∼2.00), and 5 type (greater than 2.00). For 1 and 2 type of varieties, woven wire sieve having 1.7mm openings showed better whole-kernel yields for special marketing grade, and sieve having 2.0mm openings for 3 and 4 type of varieties. Grain type which classified into 5 categories was not associated with physicochemical and cooking characteristics of rice grain, but sensory evaluation of cooked rice showed better score for 1 type varieties in terms of appearance, gloss, flavor, texture, stickiness, and taste.
