  • We investigated the effects of ginseng glycosides and their aglycones on processes of single ion channel formation and channel properties. The glycosides, Rg, and Rb, , and their aglycones, 20-(S)-protopanaxatriol (PT) and 20-(S)-protopanaxadiol (PD) increased the membrane permeability for ions. PT, PD, Rg1, and Rb1; at concentrations of 0.5, 3.0, 10.0 and 30.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml respectively; Induced single ion channel fluctuations with the life times in the range of 0.1~1005 in open states and conductances from 5 to 30 pS in 1 M KCI. At high concentrations of these substances, rapid fluctuations of transmembrane ion current with amplitude from hundred pS to dozen nS were observed. Against other substances, ginsenoside Rbl began to increase the membrane conductance at concentration of about 60 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml without fluctuation of single ion channel. Membranes treated with PT, PD, Rg1 and Rb1 are more permeable to K+, than to Cl while zero current membrane potentials with 10 gradients of KCI were 12, 16, 8, 25 mV respectively. Key words : Membrane conductance, single ion channel, ginsenosides.

  • In this paper, numerical analysis based on the RANS equation and the Realizable ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is carried out for flows around an axisymmetric body at three Reynolds numbers($1.22{\times}10^7$, $1.0{\times}10^8$, $1.5{\times}10^8$) and the numerical results are compared with experiments data. Computed velocity distributions agree well with experiments as the Reynolds number increases. Pressure distributions agree well with the results of the potential flow except the tail region but differ from experiments for the parallel middle body as well as tail region. Pressure gradients show a good agreement with those of potential flow and experiment except the tail region. Friction coefficients show that the numerical results generally are lower than the experimental results estimated from the measured velocity. The difference of friction coefficients between the calculation and the experiment increases with growing of a boundary layer.

  • To elucidate genetic diversity of common reed in Korea, we collected a total of 674 common reed plants from 27 regions in South Korea. Hierarchical clustering using 7 morphological traits divided the 27 common reed populations into 7 groups. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) results identified three distinct groups of common reed. Common reed accessions in group I mostly inhabit coastal areas. Group II includes reeds mostly collected from inland areas. Group III consists of common reed accessions collected from inland and coastal areas, suggesting that this group might contain hybrids. In summary, we suggest that parapatric speciation might be an important factor in the genetic diversity of common reed and geographical speciation of common reed that might be also affected by environmental gradients.

  • In Zone Melting Recrystallization(ZMR) of SOl structure, thin silicon films have been recrystallized by artificial control of beam intensity profile which was obtained by tilting of upper elliptical reflector. Temperature profiles and gradients near solidification interface were calculated by numerical simulation for analysis of asymmetric line heating effect. The larger the tilting angle of the upper reflector, the larger the degree of supercooling at liquid and the interdefect spacing in thin silicon films. Major defects were continuous subgrainboundaries. Isolated threading dislocations were observed in the case of the film having low defect density. We have found that the thin silicon films were recrystallized into (100) textured single crystals by cross-sectional TEM and thin film X-ray diffraction analysis.

  • Functionally gradient materials(FGMs) generally consist of different material components, such as ceramics and metals. Continuous changes in their composition, microstructure, porositys, and so on result in gradients in the properties of FGMs. In this study AlN/Al-$Al_3$Ti FGM cubes were fabricated by the powder metallurgical process, and the characteristics of the FGMs were investigated. Powders of Mg and Ti mixed with Al in different ratios or the stack of the mixed powders having a stepwisely controlled compositional gradient from one plane to another were formed in a steel mold. The more the composition of Mg and sintering temperature are increased, the more the amount of AlN is formed. AlN and $Al_3$Ti distributed with continuously gradient composition were detected by XRD analysis and also revealed in optical microstructures, and microhardness tests.

  • In this scientific work, constructing of a novel shear deformation beam model including the stretching effect is of concern for flexural and free vibration responses of functionally graded beams. The particularity of this model is that, in addition to considering the transverse shear deformation and the stretching effect, the zero transverse shear stress condition on the beam surface is assured without introducing the shear correction parameter. By employing the Hamilton's principle together with the concept of the neutral axe's position for such beams, the equations of motion are obtained. Some examples are performed to demonstrate the effects of changing gradients, thickness stretching, and thickness to length ratios on the bending and vibration of functionally graded beams.

  • The paper describes : ⅰ) Mathematical modeling of poloidal flux to define and calculate the tokamak plasma position based on a property of the plasma boundary which is always a flux surface. Controlling the plasma boundary position is therefore equivalent to equalizing the flux value on several points belonging to a curve tangent to the limiter. ⅱ) Experimental method for determining the outmost poloidal isoflux surface by a linear combination of measurements of magnetic fluxes, fields and field gradients, without requiring knowledge of internal plasma parameters for the feedback control, i.e., with neither corrections for variation in the poloidal beta and the plasma current distribution, nor compensations for the induced currents in the vacuum vessel. ⅲ) Feedback control algorithm for the regulation of plasma boundary position and its electronics hardware based on the PID control theory. ⅳ) Experimental results obtained from the RTP tokamak experiments using the present plasma control system.

  • Laboratory tests were performed on modeling of in situ remediation of contaminated soils by aqueous solution extraction, thus investigating the feasibility of in situ treatments of soil to promote desorption of organic hazardous wastes. The investigation was conducted using phenol, aniline, quinoline, and 2-napthol adsorbed onto a UH40 soil, and various aqueous solutions were used to desorb, or otherwise remove, these organic contaminants. Decontaminants consisted of deionized water as a reference, hydrogen peroxide, acidy, bases, and surfactants. In situ conditions were modeled in the laboratory by permeating potential extracting liquids through reconstituted, contaminated soil specimens under controlled hydraulic gradients and stress condition through flexible wall permeameter tests. Sodium hydroxide desorbed phenol effectively. Aniline was effectively descorbed by nonionic surfactant. Anionic surfactant remediated quinoline and 2-napthol.

  • To evaluate the effect of trapped air bubbles in horizontal drains on discharge capacity, unsaturated discharge capacity tests are carried out for four types of drains selected according to the size of section as well as the shape of core. Unsaturated discharge capacities with the elapse of time, the increase of confining pressures, and hydraulic gradients are examined and are compared with saturated discharge capacities. It is found that the unsaturated discharge capacities at a hydraulic gradient of 0.01 decreased by 17%~80% due to the remained air bubbles in the drains compared with the saturated discharge capacities. It is caused by the fact that the horizontal direction of water flow is not consistent with the direction of movement of floating air bubbles in case of horizontal drains. Especially, far the drain with filament shaped core, discharge capacities decreased significantly due to the difficulty in removing air bubbles.

  • A high-speed and initial helium jet flow has been analyzed by a developed four-dimensional digital speckle tomography. Multiple high-speed cameras have been used to capture movements of speckles in multiple angles of view simultaneously because a shape of a nozzle for the jet flow is asymmetric and the initial jet flow is fast and unsteady. The speckle movements between no flow and helium jet flow from the asymmetric nozzle controlled by a solenoid valve have been obtained by a cross-correlation tracking method so that those distances can be transferred to deflection angles of laser rays for density gradients. The four-dimensional density fields for the high-speed helium jet flow have been reconstructed from the deflection angles by a developed real-time tomography method.
